Thereās something funny about diving back into Hellsing (Alucard and Anderson specifically) after theyāve been on the back burner of my brain for so long.
Because in highschool you couldnāt pay me to shut up about those two. I couldnāt draw older men well back then though, so I didnāt do much art for them.
And now I return, middle-aged-man skills in tow, ready to do what I could only dream of doing when I was 17.
Tl:Dr - I will be drawing more Anderson and Alucard.
I have to do this. I have to finish what 17 year old me started.
Yknow I asked someone once if Alucard x Anderson would be considered under the āenemies to loversā ship trope.
At the time I just didnāt feel like that fit them somehow.
And my friend just goes āNo theyāre enemies AND lovers. Enemies to lovers implies that theyāll ever stop being enemies. Letās face it, theyād get bored if they stopped trying to defeat each other.ā
Trying to kill eachother is so much of the appeal for them. Within their introduction they're both upset when the other plays dead.
And then they're both delighted when the other proves to be a potential threat.
It's the appeal of two beings who have been without a challenge for so long. Finally being met with someone they can fuck with beyond playing dead? Anderson: FINALLY AN EXCUSE FOR
But it's also the appeal of humanity and seeing that raw unwavering spirit up close in its genuine entirety. The mere appreciation for the person behind the blade.
To the point even if Anderson can't beat him immediately? There is no doubt that he'll keep on trying (infinite chances thoughts)
It's the appeal of death. Not as something immediately desired, but as a promise that denies immortality. For the only thing left for a monster or demon, the only thing they can have, is death.
It's the appeal of an end that gives moment meaning. How old age is something beautiful. How mortality is human and for that it is precious. The promise of death to someone who has lived to long is something dear.
Paired with the fact Alucard won't let him just "win". Because pressing, and testing, and seeing how far Anderson can and will go? Is stunning and makes time worth passing. Worth living.
But it's also the appeal of understanding. How Anderson wishes to kill Alucard because he knows it hurts to live too long. His blades aren't wielded with malice or to make a point against Alucard. It's because that's all he can do for him.
They're enemies in the terms that they shall never stop tearing the other to pieces. And they are lovers in terms of the fact that they understand and care for one another.
They're doomed by both the narrative. They're doomed by the very nature of their dynamic. They're doomed by who they are as people.

Personally... I feel their dynamic flakes away from being "enemies" as the story goes on. Because there is that understanding.
An understanding that separates Anderson from Abraham and the Major who both shout their hatred against Alucard. Anderson isn't fueled by hatred. Not for Alucard. It's pity, it's the emotions that become to much.
I feel a better word is "Nemesis"
Not defined as "a long-standing rival; an archenemy."
But defined as "the inescapable agent of someone's or something's downfall."
Enemies to Lovers? No. Enemies and Lovers? Not quite. I believe Alucard defines it best. They're eachothers "Beloved Nemesis".
1 - Iām grabbing you and shaking you because this is the best description of their dynamic Iāve ever seen. You have no idea the absolute chokehold these two have had on my brain for nearly ten years.
2 - I would like to elaborate on the āenemies and loversā thing because yeah I agree with you it does not describe them in the actual show/manga. Me and my friend were purely talking about fanfics and fandom content of them as a ship if that makes sense. (Call me cringe if you want, I do this shit for fun)
In the canon media Iād say they fall under what I like to call the ādevoted rivalsā trope. Itās beautiful, complex, and I havenāt found an example of that trope that I love more than with them.
