Instead of providing state oversight, Governor Mikie Sherrill and Newark mayor Ras Baraka sent state police last night and Newark Police this morning to the streets. Their explanation was that the police were there for “public safety” and to “lower the temperature”.

Instead, state police showed up in riot gear with concrete barriers and horses to tear gas protestors and push them down the street away from the detention center. Newark city police are continuing to hold back protestors this morning. (Volume and flash warnings at links.)

The tensions from last night are expected to increase today as pro-ICE right wing counter protestors and podcasters have shown up.

There are a host of people and organizations on the ground - if you follow one you will find others quickly. They are organized and constantly communicating what is going on with us and with one another. Their instagrams and socials are the best place to stay up to date. The Linktree for various funds including support for those on the ground outside, inside, and families of those inside is constantly being updated. Organizations have indicated to go to Linktree instead of Venmo.
