The absolutely pervasive mentality that unwanted criticism or critique shouldn't be given and should be ignored is why fans of color don't stay in fan spaces.

And I am not going to mince words here:

A lot of you are racist. A lot of your fan works are racist.

That might have been difficult to hear. And if it was, you should probably reflect on why that was.

"Fandom etiquette" has created a space where fans of color either bite our tongues and eventually leave or say something, get dogged on, and then eventually leave.

also, i can't remember what documentary it was, but it's fascinating to listen to Puyi talk. Dude had that Bai Jingting beijing accent LOL (and of course, neither Mao nor Deng spoke standard mandarin)

Also also, this is how much of a northern I am. Back when POJ's promotion period was happening and there was that trailer clip with Zeng Qingjie, it took me FOREVER to realize he was saying “内容” cuz I heard "leinong" from him. I think he's from the cantonese/southern coastal area.

My family is from 浙江 and when we were in Henan for a wedding, people kept saying: " You're from where? Oh, you're from ZHe JiaNGGG, got it" 😂 (what are H's and -NG sounds, anyway? 😂) But that's the beauty of Mandarin? You travel around and you realise how diverse the vocabulary is, and how different dialects sounds from each other. And...it's all disappearing. You know it's dire when even Shanghainese people have a hard time passing down their dialect.

But to your point, I know it's VERY hard to think and analyse information from and about China in a critical way, especially this day and age of AI and misinformation, but... it's...alarming sometimes how many CCP talking point gets spread around, unwittingly. I think I've lost more than half my brain cells trying to explain to people that CCP's talking point about doing something about the 'toxic idol worship' is, well...propaganda.( If they were really interested in doing that, they would start with regulating socmed and advertisment, for example)

And to use your BBC analogy, to hear international fandom repeating these talking points is like hearing "the only correct way of line delivery is you are able to deliver it in the queen's accent regardless of your character setting." Like if you actually think critically: why on earth would 4 misfits who met on Jianghu have the same accent?

(My also genuine not!tinfoil hat: CCP loves the idol culture. Young people fighting each other over their gege/jiejie and yunhe data instead of the government? WIN)

I really can't stand international fandom parroting these "standard Mandarin only" talking points either, especially if they're only just learning Chinese. Like, depending on your level, aren't you just learning what we sound like when we talk? How do you know what's comprehensible and what isn't? And besides. Isn't the beauty of any culture that no one talks the exact same? Whether it's in diaspora or in China itself, an accent or dialect indicates an individual history. It's a great conversation opener among us, and it makes a character's background much richer.

Another thing I don't like is how standard Mandarin gets dubbed over even in settings where it makes more sense to be speaking Cantonese, or dialect, or even with an accent. Ip Man 3, for example, is set in freaking San Francisco Chinatown. These guys should all be speaking Toisan dialect or old timey American English. And yet they are all speaking perfect, sterilized Mandarin. That's blatant erasure.
