Realistically I know there’s not enough runtime in Supergirl to hit every great moment in Woman of Tomorrow. But seeing how there are some moments/lines from the trailers seemingly lifted from or inspired by the comic, I really hope we get Maypole. Maybe in Act 2. Specifically for this moment:
Because it’s good for Ruthye’s character development but also because I think the finale hits harder with the parallel to Kara at the end.
Through the whole book Kara wants to do something for this girl who suffered similarly to her, to try to right a wrong and maybe fix something in herself in the process.
Because if Ruthye can see past her pain to start actually grieving and then actually live, then maybe Kara can. Maybe there’s hope for her, too. And she tries. Gods, she tries. She is kind and patient and shows Ruthye that things can get bad but doesn’t let her see the worst of it. Instead she always, always lets her see the kindness and the justice shown in the aftermath.
But as Kara notes, it was doomed from the start. How could she ask this girl to move on when she can’t? How can she teach Ruthye to let go of her Father’s death when she still dreams of Krypton?
And the beauty of the moment is that despite Kara’s belief that she didn’t make a difference, she’s proven wrong when Ruthye talks her down. In that moment, their roles are briefly reversed and Kara can finally admit to the only person who’s gone through all of this with her that she’s overwhelmed, too. That all this power, the Supergirl of it all, isn’t enough to keep the weight of the world held up.
And she keeps lifting it anyway.
I know it won’t and can’t be 1:1. They’re probably cutting out the Kryptonite sun planet, and most of the planets that they visit while chasing the Brigands. They may condense them (Maypole included) into one segment but I hope the “It’s too big. We’re too small.” is kept in, as well as “I still dream of Krypton.” because those are the lines that still itch at my heart every time I think about Woman of Tomorrow.
