normal vs disordered: intrusive thoughts edition
normal: every so often, you pick up a knife and your brain thinks about hurting someone. you go “the fuck” and then continue chopping your vegetables
not normal: every time (or most times) you pick up a knife, your brain thinks about hurting someone. you actively avoid touching knives, and cannot continue chopping your vegetables
normal: worrying about someone’s health and well-being when you already know that they have a certain condition
not normal: getting intrusive thoughts about a certain person getting sick, and then planning out your day as if they are actually sick
normal: feeling the need to throw something off the edge of a high place any time you’re on a bridge or at the top of a building
not normal: refusing to go anywhere near a bridge or tall building in case you throw something off of it
normal: being careful in the process of turning off your oven, your heater, or other appliances
not normal: having to triple check the appliances, and then getting intrusive thoughts doubting whether you’ve turned them off or not, causing you to go back home to make sure
normal: getting the occasional strange or scary intrusive thought, and being able to shrug it off fairly easily
not normal: getting intrusive thoughts incredibly often (several times a day), and not being able to let go of them. changing your behaviour due to intrusive thoughts
the biggest things are frequency and distress levels. if you are constantly getting intrusive thoughts, or your intrusive thoughts are getting in the way of your life, that is cause for concern!
i know the way people talk about their pets now is probably how we’ve been doing it for all of history. a cat owner in ancient rome saw their cat lounging on the dining pillows and commented “he thinks himself to be the senator claudius 🤣”
saw someone post "I don't understand why anyone would have separate 'winter tires' unless they're just looking for things to spend money on" and looked at her account and she's from LA. which is funny but I think we're all guilty of similar behavior sometimes. if you see people spending time and effort on something that seems stupid to you it's worth considering whether you're the Californian in this scenario

it is impossible to watch a movie. every night i think i want to watch a movie. no movie gets watched. because it's not possible

It's a popular factoid on tumblr that "in the past, most people ate street food rather than preparing their meals every day." This is supposed to reassure people that it's true that it's hard to cook every single goddamn day, and you shouldn't feel bad for ordering out.
This, of course, is kind of ridiculous if you think about it for a few seconds: even if we start counting from, say, ancient Mesopotamian Uruk, usually recognized as the oldest city, it was 2007 when the world's urban population surpassed the world's rural population. Throughout history, most people did not live in a setting when restaurants or street food made sense.
This is because "they went out to eat fast food" is a more palatable answer than the truth: throughout history, work was done by wives, children, servants, and slaves.
Ultimately, that is the answer. The people you learn about - the Roman senators, the Renaissance artists, the Aztec emperors, the ancient philosophers, the nineteenth century scholars - had the drudge work of life being done by their wives, their children, servants, or slaves. Even grad students spending all summer in the field and then writing their doctoral dissertations in the 1970s usually had their wives doing most of the work for them - and in fact, grad students to this day have workloads calibrated to the assumption you have a live-in housewife doing all your cooking and cleaning for you! It's not good!
(The other answer is that for a lot of people, for a lot of history, they owned maybe three outfits, and they ate the same thing every day. If you lived in The Past odds were good that 90% of your meals consisted of the staple grain of your region in a pot that could be left simmering over the fire for hours while you did other work.)
There's no easy answer for a world that believes in equality. A world that believes that whole classes of people shouldn't actually deserve to get relegated to maintenance work so that a few individuals can be brilliant. Because the answer in the past was wives, children, servants, and slaves. We need a better answer for the future.

really for this kind of thing it’s no use going to published trad romance and i should know that. the really good shit is 400k on fanfiction dot net for a heterosexual pairing you’ve never considered from a piece of media you havent thought about in years written by a bored doctoral candidate who’s read a lot of primary sources from the long 18th century
recently rediscovered my absolute favorite entry in the genre: customs and duties by tortoiseshells, which is an insane technicalityromance set in 1738 boston, ft the stuffy british navy guy from pirates of the caribbean/ofc, smuggling, puritanism in the john calvin sense, the legal realities of widowhood, several real historical governors of massachusetts, debts, accounts, and of course customs regulations
I would also like to nominate and psyche's lamp shall darkling be, a story based on the 2025 Frankenstein movie that gets into the intricacies of 1850s convent school life, the process of Catholic ecclesiastical courts verifying miracles, multiple points of mid 19th century marriage and inheritance laws pertaining to property, and also spells the word connection with an X so you know the author has been in the 19th century literature trenches 
I cannot imagine 1) That the Corporation Rim would produce free entertainment 2) That Murderbot paid for any of its serials. The entertainment feed is HuMaxFlix Plus with 500 different micro subscription options, and Murderbot has been the universe's most prolific TV pirate this whole time.

The reason why so many of y'all's feminism sucks is because you still believe deep down in your hearts that there are only two kinds of people in the world: precious, ethereal, fragile dollthings called "women", and violent, lustful, rage-fueled apes called "men". Until you throw that idea away, 3rd-grade-tier "girls rule boys drool, girls are princesses and boys are stinky :(" is as feminist as we'll ever get-- and I hope it's obvious that that's lightyears away from the bare minimum of where we need to be.
I don't know how I'm supposed to explain to ostensibly trans-friendly feminists that "women are beautiful soft things made of glass, men are obsessed with violence and sex" is exactly what the patriarchy wants you to believe. Patriarchy wants you to believe that being a woman and/or having a vagina (patriarchy generally believes those two things are synonymous) makes one shatter on impact with reality. It makes you easier to control if you are scared shitless of the other half of the population, and it makes you more compliant with your lot in life if you believe it is in the nature of the other half of the population to rape and kill rather than realise those were choices those individual rapists and murderers made. There is no way to make gender essentialism progressive and feminist, because it is one of patriarchy's tools of subjugation. Stop trying to make it progressive.
And I can scream all of that from the rooftops over and over again, and what I hear in reply is "Trans men really are men because no woman would ever decide to become an inherently evil repugnant rapist ape", and "You're so right. Trans women are women because they too are pretty delicate little objects I can fuck", and "You're non-binary? So are you fucktoy non-binary or sexpest non-binary?", and my patience runs ever thinner.
