Reaching out to the leopard gecko keepers of tumblr here. My previous herp experience has been with colubrid snakes so I'm unfamiliar with the habits of legged reptiles.

I've come into possession of a little gal(?) of unknown age whose previous care was less than ideal (common story with rehomed herps 9_9). Including her feeding regimen being: buy 30 live crickets at the pet store and dump them into the cage and let her eat on them for 2 weeks or however long it takes her to eat them. No mention of gut-loading or dusting.

Like um absolutely the fuck NOT is that how things are going to happen in this household.

FWIW she appears to be in decent health other than being maybe obese (I'm not going to stress her out by messing around with her right now to check), but I'll be scheduling her a vet appointment in the next couple weeks to get that side of things checked out more thoroughly.

In the mean time, how hard is it to switch a leo from that feeding schedule nonsense to set feedings of non-crickets? Right now I've got dubias and mealworms on tap (properly gut-loading at the moment and with Repashy calcium powder awaiting them in the shake-n-bake bin), will be getting a third as-yet undecided type of feeder as well. My plan is to give this girl a couple days to just chill as is, then to go in and capture all the remaining crickets (yes there are at least a dozen still in the cage), give her another couple days with no free-roaming food, and then try offering some dubias (I figure these will be the most active and reminiscent of crickets, as opposed to the mealworms). If she doesn't go for them, remove from the cage and try again the next day. Is this a good plan or can someone with more experience offer me some other ideas?

Not wanting to have sex is NOT a problem. It doesn’t matter if you are asexual or allo, there is nothing wrong with not wanting sex. It’s just an activity. That’d be like saying that if you don’t like soccer, you need to go to soccer therapy to figure out why you dislike it and figure out how to like it because it’s for your own good. Knowing what I know about chinese culture there’s something so beautifully simple about his logic of “no son to carry on family name/look after them in old age/all the other stuff? Skill issue! Should’ve had more sons! Should’ve kept the family unit strong yourself! Blaming your daughter for your own failure of family planning is W E A K!” and then he learns there are more sons and it completely breaks his train of logic because if yes to more sons then why issue?? You have two others and you’re mad you don’t have three?? Whack. Greedy.

I can already envision him as an ancient lord of a powerful house looking down his nose at the latest messenger bringing gossip from the house of his offspring’s friend and going “now they have a daughter to marry into another family for powerful alliances and two sons to take over her former duties and somehow they’re still complaining about their good fortune? They shall not survive the winter.” and then sipping his tea with all the grim satisfaction of someone about to watch an unnecessary soap opera of drama unfold from a safe distance or something
