character has a fever and is hallucinating
character is in an old building and the floor collapses under them
Whumpee was seeing things again. Bugs. People. Things that didn't make sense. Things that would've made sense in other conditions.
But they had not a soul they could tell this to. It would've been a step backwards. And Whumpee didn't want to give the impression that they were going backwards.
So they bore it silently. They ignored the hallucinations. Both visual and auditory. They smiled and nodded when they couldn't hear Caretaker's voice over the sound of loud yelling in their ear they knew wasn't coming from any rational source.
Two words: Caretaker Stress
A caretaker who...
the only medic or only one with medical knowledge
has to care for multiple people or teammates at once
has to care for people (teammate or other) with little to no medical supplies
has to care for people out in the field and render first aid
has to perform procedures outside their expertise
is constantly responsible for their teammates' (or others) health and lives
will always blame themselves when they can't save someone or feel like they're not doing enough

Whumper is so tired of all the mundane, seemingly pointless aspects of their life. Every day is just... tedious. Frustrating. Boring.
The one thing that keep them going is coming home to their dear whumpee. The little noises whumpee makes when they're in pain, the way tears sparkle in their otherwise dull eyes, the feeling of their warm body trembling against whumper's... just looking forward to that is enough to keep whumper motivated, keep them going, day after day.
They'd do anything to keep whumpee. Anything.
caretaker comes to whumper's house, a small first-aid kit hanging off their shoulder. "where are they?"
whumper gestures to a side room and caretaker goes in wordlessly. they flip the light on and set their bag down on the floor before kneeling next to whumpee.
"i'm here to fix you up, not to hurt you. i'm sorry this has happened to you, but there's nothing i can do to stop it. let me know if i need to stop, i'll be going quick."
"who are you?" whumpee asks. "please help me."
"i'm sorry, there's nothing i can do, truly." caretaker says, looking over their shoulder to see whumper standing in the doorway.
Whumpee is finally free!
After almost a year of captivity, relentless horrors, an unexpected rescue, emergency surgery, months of hospital care…
They’re now in recovery and struggling with the most innocuous of triggers.
After so long trapped in a windowless space, they are desperate for fresh air. It's a primal urge. Yet, leaving a window even slightly ajar is terrifying; easier for whumper to find and recapture them.
The stress is overwhelming, mentally flicking between the two things they need: air and safety.
Cue another meltdown.
noticing how bored and despondent whumpee has become, whumper decides to give them something in the guise of a present: a sketchpad, or a model kit, or an origami book - just something they can be creative with
whumpee, after a long captivity of nothing but pain and fear, is thrilled to have something productive to do, and buries themself in whatever this activity is
then, a day or a week later, whumper comes back, looks around at all whumpee’s creations -
before destroying each and every one in front of whumpee’s eyes and throwing them in the trash
interrogation things
avoiding only their head and neck during beatings, to avoid rendering them incoherent
blackmail
“careful. it’s not like you need any limb except your head to tell us. if you don’t talk, we might start getting rid of the extra baggage.”
denial of basic human needs (food, water, basic hygiene)
forcibly undressing them to keep them vulnerable
fucking with their psyche on purpose
good cop / bad cop
“hm. i don’t think they need their eyes to talk, do they?” “oh, what a lovely idea. no, they do not.”
humiliating them, creating an imbalanced power dynamic
slamming hands on the table
“it would all be over if you just talked. you’re doing this to yourself, really.”
keeping them blindfolded the entire time
no window and lights never turn off, making them lose track of time
pressing their head to the table while hissing into their ear
recording every second of it
refusing medical care
tightening restraints to the point of obstructed bloodflow
typical torture techniques (waterboarding, pulling fingernails out, …)
years later, they have almost forgotten about what happened, until someone in their close proximity somehow finds the tapes

Body Language & Behavior: Headache
boredom due to inability to do anything at all
burying head in hands
clenching teeth
dizziness when standing up
dropping head back
finally crashing and sleeping the entire day
fumbling with a package of painkillers and struggling to get past the child safety
groaning quietly
massaging head at every opportunity
pressing head into a pillow or perhaps the chest of a loved one
resting torso on the table if they can’t get a better place to rest
rubbing head
squeezing eyes shut
staying in bed all day
trying the most obscure headache relief hacks they can think off (it doesn’t work, but it keeps them busy)
turning head away from bright lights

Whumpee who has just accepted/realized that Caretaker was actually not going to hurt them and genuinely cared about their well being, and can’t wait any longer. They curl into Caretakers lap or lean against them on the sofa, so touch starved that they don’t even care. Caretaker stroking their hair back out of their eyes, unsure what changed but perfectly willing to go along with it.
Caretaker feeling guilty about something is always interesting.
Maybe whumpee got hurt because of them or even protecting them.
Maybe they were in the same situation as whumpee and blame themselves for not risking their life as whumpee did.
Maybe they believe they have to hide something important from whumpee because bad news won’t help their recovery.
Maybe they are secretly in love with whumpee and touching them while they’re hurt feels like taking advantage of them.
If whumpee knew, they would not blame caretaker for any of this. They would be surprised caretaker even felt bad in the first place. But whumpee doesn’t know — all they see is that caretaker acts strange and avoids eye contact. It makes whumpee start feeling like a burden.
Give me a caretaker and whumpee duo that hated eachother originally but come to like eachother due to mutual hating for whumper.
Like I hate Whumper, you hate Whumper, so I guess we’ll form a temporary team to bring that loser down then go our seperate ways
But they NEVER go their seperate ways
