Everyone always talking about brain damage, but if you want to drive your whumpee slowly crazy with constant, low levels of discomfort, give them some nerve damage, specifically paralysis. A constant tingling, a constant feeling of wrongness, but no pain and thus no pain relief. Having to relearn certain things that the body knows how to do but just can’t anymore. Staring at self in the mirror—at the part of their body they can no longer feel—and poking it constantly. Getting to a point where they can‘t even rell whether they feel it or whether their brain is tricking them. Feeling phantom pains and touches. Not knowing whether this is going to go away again (if the nerve rebuilds over time), or if it going to stay like this forever.
What it is like to be put under anesthesia
(in my experience, bc this was the first thing i wrote after waking up from surgery a couple hours ago)
since you can’t eat beforehand, I went in pretty grumpy-hungry but believe me, nervousness takes care of that QUICK and i completely forgot
if you have good staff, they notice when you‘re nervous & chat calmly without overwhelming you
anesthesiologists and other staff members repeatedly ask what surgery you are getting done to make sure you were properly informed and to avoid mixups; made me nervous (bc why did no one know what surgery they were doing with me??) until my anesthesiologist explained that they just have to hear me say the words
during prep, different people will be doing different things and giving instructions on what to do (make a fist, put your arm there, etc.), sometimes overlapping (adhd hell)
the face mask was placed over my mouth and nose with just normal breathing air for like 3 minutes while they were still prepping (i assume to get me used to the sensation?)
once the drugs started coming, my very very first instinct was „oh, i‘m gonna throw up“
i didn‘t throw up but then everything went hazy and blurred, kinda like being REALLY tired-drunk
one of the anesthesiologists was standing behind me and caressing my face while talking to me and promising to take care of me when she noticed i was getting freaked out; the other one was administering the drugs
no need to count or having to talk until passed out, they just told me to close my eyes and that was it

being wheeled around in the bed is kinda surreal because you only see the ceiling (blurry too in my case since i wasn’t wearing my glasses) and hear everything around you. it is strangely protected but also vulnerable since in that moment you have no ability to decide what happens
before you go into the operating room you are first wheeled into a room where you transfer from bed to operating table, but the room is super creepy and looks straight out of a medical horror game, with the sterile cold metal table in the middle and all
when you are wheeled into the operating room it is super cold but they put a warm, fluffy blanket fresh out of a towel warmer or something all around you and it is heavenly warm
my surgeon came in and i didnt recognize him masked up and without my glasses, and he made a joke about how i might not recognize him after either (there was risk of blinding me, diabolical joke to make) so the anesthesiologists banished him from the room
the anesthesiologists will try to find a topic to chat to you about as a distraction while strapping you in and as someone who is socially awkward, it is much more stressful than the thought of surgery itself
but they are used to the awkwardness and discussed how you would intubate a giraffe (came up because my sister is an anesthesiologist for animals) and that was the last discussion we had before i went to sleep

I just wome up from the tumor removsl surgery i mentioned and before I forget I thought I would keep track of what that‘s actually like and make a couple posts on it
for that i have five rules/disclaimers for yall
i‘m fine. for context, i had a parotid tumor for three years because originally a doctor misdiagnosed me as it being lymph nodes that wandered up. yeay doctors and not believing women. anyway, in surgery the tumor turned out to be bigger than expected and part of my parotid gland had to be removed because of it. there was mild risk of facial paralysis snd my face is lagging behind a tiny bit, but it seems i‘m all gonna be fine and dandy
literally woke up an hour ago so if there are spelling mistakes or something doesn’t make sense and you make fun of me, you suck /lh
also, using this as a coping mechanism and kinda journaling? also bc i thought it‘d be interesting for my own writing but again, i‘m already starting to forget. so pls don‘t tell me not to make posts about it and rest instead, writing is my coping mechanism and that includes making posts
you can use my posts as prompts/references and dont be afraid to tag them as such, even if it feels weird i promise i‘m okay with it & feel free to ask questions, i likely can‘t answer anything more medical but i can answer from the perspective of a patient
i know, plenty people have been through more and worse surgery and are much more qualified to make such posts but pls don‘t invalidate my experience, this was still scary <3

Sending them to tear the other apart like rabid dogs, forced to take part in a fight they have no part in. Even if the losing weapon is not killed, its owner leaves the disgraced and injured creature behind in pure disgust. The winning owner either puts the disgraced weapon out of its misery or takes it home to keep for themselves.
Living Weapon being forced to kill mindless clones of their loved ones over and over again to desensitize them for when/if they ever have to do it for real.
Soooo fucking obsessed with the dynamic between a tired weapon of mass destruction and his weirdly intimate handler who genuinely wants the best for him but doesn't actually have enough power to free him, so they just do their best to try and look after him within the framework they have to operate in.
Grabbing him by the back of his neck and looking in his eyes, drilling an order because they know if he disobeys, he will get into trouble. Helping him hide his mistakes. Snapping at him and calming immediately when he flinches. Acting to others like they don't see him as more than an assignment but also not letting a single person fuck with him for no reason. Not being in a position where going easy on him is an option, so being intense and overbearing in this case is the only way they can look after him.

Guy who never feels like his problems are “bad enough” to be taken seriously: what if I hurt the character so horrifically that everyone around them could not possibly deny the severity of their pain even if the character themself tries to downplay it.

whumpee characterizations ? and what it takes to break them
thief whumpee: silver-tongued/ can't keep still/ uses humor as a coping mechanism-> gagged/ stress positions/ a casual whumper whose indifference immobilizes whumpee
royal whumpee: stoic/ proud/ seeks revenge after their imprisonment-> forced to kneel/ public humiliation, dragged around like a trophy, collared, branded etc/ enough scars to look like a constellation on their skin
healer whumpee: kind/ keeps up an image for the sake of others/ skilled in their trade-> pushed to the edge/ others have to take care of them/ hands or fingers so badly damaged they'll never be able to help anyone else again
innocent whumpee: naive/ trusting/ hopeful-> "no one is coming for you"/ left to die/ a whumper who twists whumpee's anger against their friends
bitter whumpee: apathetic/ shrugs off what they've been through/ exhausted-> "I'm fine." followed by collapsing/ vivid flashbacks where they wake up screaming/ refuses to fall asleep after their ordeal
leader whumpee: independent to the point of isolation/ tries to protect everyone/ mentally well-adjusted (mostly)-> set up to fail/ forced to hurt their teammates/ they come back changed, and everyone avoids them
villain whumpee: defiant/ insults whumper every chance they get/ so many failed escape attempts-> non-con drugging, left a shadow of their past selves/ conditioned to obey/ kneeling next to whumper at a press conferences
Whumper owning trained dogs and living weapons and treating them the exact same. They sleep in crates next to each other, wear the same collars, have the same commands, even eat the same foods. Some of the weapons don't even know how to speak and have adopted bark and growl-like noises for communication. Whumper sharpening weapon's teeth once weapon begins biting enemies they same way the dogs do.
Whumper sits down and has a dog resting its head on his thigh for pets, and soon weapon begins to mirror it. Whumper pets weapon's head the exact same way he would for the dogs, and the weapon's eyes close with bliss. "Good boy."
