As their relationship gradually deepened, Thomas began to become aware of something particularly concerning regarding Atlas. Something that conjured vague memories of days long-passed and made him cold. He did not dare to allow the speculation to solidify within his mind until he could be certain, but there came a point when he had no choice but to be.

Atlas was reliant on laudanum.

Now, it was more common to meet a Londoner who made use of it than who did not, but its purpose was the soothing of temporary maladies or readjusting of sleep. Hell, he used it himself years ago when his circadian rhythm had been decimated by honey use. But Atlas used it daily, usually multiple times, often not even pouring a measured dosage into a spoon and instead taking one- or more often several- swigs from the bottle. While they were still able to maintain their professional relationship with Benthic, and completed commissions on their better days, he could see them slipping. He saw them when they were not trying.

They silently stared into space for far too long and far too often for his comfort. Their ability to feed themself was dwindling. They smiled with nothing behind it. Should they have multiple days of no teaching duties, they would spend the bulk of that time in bed. While he had witnessed their notes, messy and rushed in a way that he imagined reflected their mind while in the throes of inspiration, some days their writing descended into complete illegibility as they struggled to hold their pen.

"Diamond, why do you do this?" He asked gently one evening as they grabbed up a bottle from their bedside drawer.

"Do what?"

Thomas helplessly gestured to the drug in their hand.

They blinked. "Laudanum is London's panacea of choice, no? Or at least it seems to be so in any apothecary."

"Not to the degree that you are using it. Do you not… can you not tell what it is doing to you?"

Their expression twisted somewhat. "It is helping me."

"No, it is not." His voice broke as he settled atop the counterpane next to them. "It… dulls you. In every way. You lose your luster, and… I cannot imagine that you enjoy it."

"You think I do this for enjoyment?" They unstopped it, holding both lid and bottle closer to their chest. Thomas opened his mouth. Closed it. Atlas continued. "I do it because the alternative is far worse."

"The alternative to this?"

"It- it helps me." They repeated. "The ache of the hole he left behind does not hurt as badly. I am less scared. I do not dwell on past horrors. I can sleep."

"Who-"

They raised the little bottle and drank far more of its contents than anyone should in a single instance. Their hands shook more than usual when they replaced the cap and returned it to the drawer. Their face pinched at the taste, before slackening somewhat.

They turned to Thomas, and he got a nauseatingly intimate view of their eyes fading.

"Lay down with me?"

How could he say no?

The pair wound up in their usual position, on their sides with Atlas held to Thomas' front. He was secretly relieved- he no longer had to look at those eyes.

"Darling, this may just kill you." He said after a time. There was no bite in his voice; nothing to suggest chastisement. Just sadness. "You are going to kill yourself doing this."

"I have killed myself. Not on purpose, I've just done things that got me killed, and that I knew could get me killed." They slurred. "Those deaths hurt, and this doesn't."

Thomas had nothing to say to that. There was nothing he could say through what felt like a sharp wound in his chest. He pressed his face to their hair and breathed in, rubbing a thumb up and down where his hand was pressed to their abdomen in a motion he hoped was soothing.

More time. What felt like hours but was likely a meager handful of minutes. Not sure if Atlas was even conscious anymore, he spoke again, much quieter:

"Whom were you talking about? Who left a hole in you?"

Silence. They were asleep, then. He had just closed his eyes when a hand came to lace scarred fingers through his own, holding it in place against them.

"One day I may tell you about my brother." Atlas' form curled slightly, as if they retreated into themself. Or perhaps were protecting a pain within their ribs. "That day isn't today."

"…Alright."

Things got to the point of Atlas' opioid tolerance getting crazy high.

Thomas is working on the whole "relationships are reciprocal" thing.

Thomas was tired.

There used to be a time when she would completely hide this from Atlas- and it was still a habit, although now she made less of an effort. With all they had endured, there was no place for her fatigue, she would think.

Knowing the reason for it only caused her to feel worse. Compounding bad nights where Atlas sobbed in her arms for hours; days when lingering damage flared so severely that they could scarcely move; especially terrible evenings where she had to hold their hands and promise laudanum would never be a solution to their problems. How could she, when faced with all that, announce that because of it she was feeling a little down?

Now, she was not immune to her own dips in condition. There had been, and likely would be, times when her insomnia reached such a state that she scarcely slept for days and restless exhaustion plagued every minute. Sometimes fear of her parents making their return gripped her heart with such suffocating strength that she could do little more than sit, paralyzed, and hope endlessly that never came to pass. At least until Atlas pulled her out of it with a book and a bottle of something aged.

Yet the majority of the time she was able to push through it, and she did. She was aware enough to recognize it was to her own detriment, but placed Atlas too far above herself to care. She knew that if she told them as much, they would protest until they ran out of breath. She knew some part of them suspected it anyway, making its presence known when they waved her off to class while being unable to walk or insisting on keeping her company into the early morning hours until they couldn't anymore. She knew that if she told them how tired she truly was they would make every accommodation.

Maybe one day.

But now her mind felt like a filament stretched impossibly thin. Worries would crop up in her mind only to fade before she could even properly register them. She was close to altering her schedule to omit morning classes entirely, and began to empathize with Atlas' days of needing an excess of motivation to rise from bed despite not experiencing any flare-ups. And she continued to keep it to herself.

Atlas' scars hurt.

This was not an uncommon occurrence. In fact, anytime they went a full day without at least one of their many past injuries twinging or burning in some way, they marked the occasion.

By far, the worst scar was on their back. It was a large, jagged, ugly thing that spanned from the tip of their left scapula to just above their waist. It and their spine often ached in tandem with the memory of their worst fall from Feducci's Painted Ring, having landed on a gargoyle wing before tumbling the rest of the way. The pain was indescribable, and even before going to the Boatman they had lost all their senses save for the screaming rip across their back. Or perhaps they had been the one screaming.

That was years ago, and now it smarted as Atlas recalled sharp stone.

As if to conspire against them, it was never a singular scar that acted up at any given time; their hands protested overuse, and the more recent stab wound in their leg never failed to make it clear that it had healed wrong. While most scars stung or throbbed, that particular one caused a deep ache that shot darts of pain up to their knee should they place too much weight on its foot. And since their current day was one of their worse ones, it ached whether or not they were walking, or even upright.

Thomas had already left for classes by the time they woke, their lateness a rarity, but were she present she would have remarked upon how terrible Atlas must have felt for having chosen to not only remain in bed long after waking, but to forego a day's work entirely: they had written off any hope of commissions or monograph progress the moment their leg's gnawing made itself known. The moment they shifted and felt small bolts of fire skittering across their back.

They carefully laid back down with a long exhale, not even daring to make the movement to prop up their leg until they were fully awake and prepared. Deep breaths became a doze- a usual occurrence when they found themself unoccupied- and when next they woke they forced themself into a sitting position with only the smallest of sounds. Internally lamenting their jar of scar ointment being empty and not having been well enough to make more, they grabbed up their cane. Its jewels glinting in the room's light, as they had not been able to sleep in the dark for years now, they allowed themself to admire it before sliding from the bed into their slippers, sure to lean entirely on their uninjured leg.

They despised being bedbound.

Keeping their back as rigid and unmoving as possible, and exercising constant caution over how they shifted their weight, they managed the journey to the main room. Every flare of pain beckoned accompanying memories, and every brief tug on one of their locs brought them back, redirecting his attention elsewhere.

A cylinder in the phonograph. Half a mug of tea, for that was all with which they trusted their trembling hands. Breakfast was far too daunting a task, so instead they settled into their overstuffed chair before the hot coals that were the remnants of a fire. While the music- a classical piano piece- did well to give their mind something to follow, they hoped their hands would grow steady enough for them to read.
