AAAAAA I SHOULD HAVE BEEN TAGGED MY DEFAULTS FOR SKINTONE ARE USUALLY LIKE, YELLOW OR ASH.Â
me reblogging my own posts
When you are writing a story and refer to a character by a physical trait, occupation, age, or any other attribute, rather than that characterâs name, you are bringing the readerâs attention to that particular attribute. That can be used quite effectively to help your reader to focus on key details with just a few words. However, if the fact that the character is âthe blond,â âthe magician,â âthe older woman,â etc. is not relevant to that moment in the story, this will only distract the reader from the purpose of the scene.Â
If your only reason for referring to a character this way is to avoid using his or her name or a pronoun too much, donât do it. Youâre fixing a problem that actually isnât one. Just go ahead and use the name or pronoun again. Itâll be good.
Someone finally spelled out the REASON for using epithets, and the reasons NOT to.
In addition to that:
If the character you are referring to in such a way is THE VIEWPOINT CHARACTER, likewise, donât do it. I.e. if youâre writing in third person but the narration is through their eyes, or what is also called âthird person deep POVâ. If the narration is filtered through the characterâs perception, then a very external, impersonal description will be jarring. Itâs the same, and just as bad, as writing âMy bright blue eyes returned his gazeâ in first person.
Furthermore,Â
if the story is actually told through the eyes of one particular viewpoint character even though itâs in the third person, and in their voice, as is very often the case, then you shouldnât refer to the characters in ways that character wouldnât.
In other words, if the third-person narrator is Harry Potter, when Dumbledore appears, it says âDumbledore appearsâ, not âAlbus appearsâ. Bucky Barnes would think of Steve Rogers as âSteveâ, where another character might think of him as âCapâ. Chekov might think of Kirk as âthe captainâ, but Bones thinks of him as âJimâ.Â
Now, there are real situations where you, I, or anybody might think of another person as âthe other manâ, âthe taller manâ, or âthe doctorâ: usually when you donât know their names, like when there are two tap-dancers and a ballerina in a routine and one of the men lifts the ballerina and then she reaches out and grabs the other manâs hand; or when there was a group of people talking at the hospital and they all worked there, but the doctor was the one who told them what to do. These are all perfectly natural and normal. Similarly, sometimes I think of my GP as âthe doctorâ even though I know her name, or one of my coworkers as âthe taller manâ even though I know his. But I definitely never think of my long-term life partner as âthe green-eyed womanâ or one of my best friends as âthe taller personâ or anything like that. Itâs not a sensible adjective for your brain to choose in that situation - itâs too impersonal for someone youâre so intimately acquainted with. Also, even if someone was having a one night stand or a drunken hookup with a stranger, they probably wouldnât think of that person as âthe other manâ: you only think of âotherâ when youâre distinguishing two things and you donât have to go to any special effort to distinguish your partner from yourself to yourself.

Dear internet,
Please give me all the advice you have on writing cover letters. Like, the closer you can get to literally just writing a cover letter for me, the better. Ok bye.
This is how I did the one for my librarian position. Â I hope it helps.
Dear Person Hiring for this Job,
I am writing to ask you to consider me for X position. Â This is a paragraph about why I want to do X position in general. Â It includes at least one personal detail and at least one job skill I consider a particular strength. Â It argues that I am passionate about this career. Â It is not long.
I have had the opportunity to gain experience in this job by - paragraph about my work or study experience. Â It should go from most recent experience back. Â Include some details about your responsibilities/achievements in your most recent or most important positions. Â If you have mostly study experience, give more detail about what exactly you studied. Â If you shadowed people, mention that. Â If your work experience is largely unrelated, try to shoehorn some of it in (e.g. I gained experience working with people by). Â You can supplement with relevant hobbies. Â (But if you do have recent, relevant work experience, you should largely be detailing that. Â Only embroider the other stuff if you need to flesh it out.) Â This should be the longest paragraph.
I hope you will consider allowing me to do X thing at your company. Â This is a few sentences about why I want to work at your company in particular and what I think I could bring. Â Try to mention at least one detail from the company website, so they know you visited it. Â This is a short paragraph that parallels the first one.
Thank you very much for your time and attention.
Sincerely,
Person You Would Be a Fool Not to At Least Interview
oh my god thank you this is relevant to current interests
Two other points, to challenge whatâs being said above a little:
1) Remember that the person reading this cover letter wants to know how you can contribute to the company. Not how excited you are about the position: itâs all about what they gain. Try framing the whole thing in that sense â âYou would gain my X awesome skill that would help you Y with your mission.â âHereâs why Iâm awesome and a great fit for making your company go better.â
2) At the end, ask for the interview. âI am available at PHONE NUMBER at your convenience. I look forward to speaking with you about this great opportunity soon.â Maybe even say youâll be following up at a specific time and date. Ask for the job. People respond to that, and itâs a good way to fake confidence until you make it. Ask for the job.
Okay, three points. People reading cover letters get SO BORED going through them. Think about starting off with a story that relates to why youâre interested in the job, or that demonstrates a skill or a strong interest that would make you a good candidate. Be memorable â people remember stories, even (maybe especially) very little ones.
*hoards advice*

This is why y'all need to stop saying that some art is bad art. Bye.
psa: donât mention commissions/patreon on AO3
Hi guys! So I know we all donât actually read the terms and conditions of things and just hit agree assuming thereâs nothing important in there (I do it too oops) but if you take writing commissions or anything involving money, then thereâs actually something in the AO3 terms and conditions to be aware of.
Linking to a personal website or blog/social network where you are taking donations, posting commissions or mentioning published works is permitted, but advertising it directly on the Archive is not, nor is using language which one might interpret as requesting financial contributions. For example, you can say something to the effect of âcheck out my Tumblr if you want to know more about me and my writingâ and include the link to the site, but you cannot specifically state anything about donations, commissions or sales on the Archive.
Today someone reported one of my fics as violating this condition - presumably because Iâd mentioned my patreon in the authorâs note (I wasnât actively requesting donations either⌠Iâd literally just mentioned that it existed, and that the fic in question was written as a thank-you for hitting one of my goals).
Iâve written to AO3 to check whether just saying âthank you to those who support me on patreonâ is fine and Iâll let you guys know when they get back to me, but if itâs still going too far in terms of being a âcommercial promotionâ then Iâll just avoid mentioning this in the future! :â)
As I said, someone did actually report my fic for this - so there are people out there who are noticing/reporting these situations. Please be aware of this if you take fic commissions, or use patreon or ko-fi, because your account could end up suspended, which of course no one wants!
<3 <3
UPDATE:Â AO3 got back to me - youâre not allowed to mention or link to patreon at all, regardless of how itâs phrased. Not sure if itâs the same for ko-fi but it might be better to be safe than sorry!
<3 @kahnah23 relevant to you and possibly some others~
Thatâs a fucking bullshit rule, Iâm sorry. They shouldnât deny you the opportunity to advertise your own work.
archive of our own is run by the organization for transformative works. ao3 and the other services that otw offers - including legal services for fan creators who get in legal trouble - are nonprofit organizations.
this isnât just a self-determined descriptor; thatâs a legal definition that requires adherence to specific rules and laws regarding income, profit, and donations.
this isnât a âbullshit ruleâ just meant to prevent creators from advertising. in opâs post, the contact from ao3 offers a roundabout way to advertise. this rule ensures that ao3 and the organization for transformative works to stay a non-profit organization - this âbullshit ruleâ is essentially a way so that ao3 and the other services that the organization for transformative works can stay online.
itâs not just about maintaining nonprofit status. (i question if thatâs even applicable here, since the profits in question donât go to the organisation, but i know very little about nonprofit law. just a gut feeling.)
the actual point is, they run a legal services organisation for fans who get into legal trouble. they literally exist for the purpose of helping you not get into legal trouble. profiting from fan fiction very much opens you up to the possibility of getting into legal trouble. theyâre not going to let people do things on their website that they know will land them in exactly that trouble.
and to be clear, just because everyone who slaps a patreon button on their tumblr isnât getting sued, doesnât mean they arenât doing something for which they could be sued.
let me say it again:Â profiting from fan fiction very much opens you up to the possibility of getting into legal trouble.
hereâs why.
use of other peopleâs characters is subject to copyright law. the general principle that makes downloading a movie or a song piracy also applies to the use of a character, assuming certain factors such as uniqueness.
how fan fiction has come to scrape by in the past: by not being a commercial enterprise.
in contrast, for use music, video, images incorporated into new works: by being significantly transformative.
these two factors, commerciality and transformativity, are considered side by side. the greater the transformativity, the less weight commerciality will be given. if something is highly transformative and non-commercial, then itâs almost certainly fine. down the other end, if itâs not at all transformative and commercial, forget it.
itâs a matter of judgement as to what degree of transformativity there is in the work that will push it over the line to overcome the general prohibition against commercial use. but fan fiction in the truest sense is barely transformative. in fact the goal is to come as close to copying a character as possible.
an analogy with the use of music: a cover band, despite every part of the performance of the song being done by that band, is still playing a song that was created by someone else. you, the fic writer, as covering someone elseâs character.
the cover band you see at your local bar? they, or the local bar itself, have paid a fee to obtain permission to play that song. (even if they were playing for free they would still have to obtain permission, because any public performance of copyrighted music is prohibited.) in contrast, use of a line from one song in another another song that uses the line for parody? fine (Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, 510 U.S. 569 (1994)). letâs call that the AU with the names changed, the location different, and everything about that characterâs backstory is gone. they just look like the actor and have a dialogue pattern that matches.
the better you are at writing a character in character, ironically the more likely you are to violate copyright law. and thatâs why the commercial factor becomes incredibly relevant.
basically, donât get paid, keep being cool with the law*.
*this is not an endorsement of the principles of copyright law itself. this is about what that law is and how it works.
People also forget the reason why disclamers on fics became so prevalent.
Please understand that profiting off fanfiction, fanart and all forms of fan-content is direct violation of copyrighted material.
Your commissions to draw popular characters? Direct violation of Copyright. AO3 works hard to maintain fandom expression protected. You hurt their cause by not adhering to their term of use.
Theyâre there so you wonât get sued.
On this front, fandom creators in the US may want to batten down the hatches because the Trump administration is pretty much guaranteed to highly favor intellectual property ownersâespecially groups like the MPAA and RIAAâover fair use and transformative works.
Weâve got a lot more legal precedent than we used to on our side, but this kind of âbullshit detailâ has historically been a lever for these people to hang a lawsuit on and no doubt it will be again.
Yeah, afaik fanworks have more legal protection than they used to, but that could go away in an instant.
Anybody else old enough to remember writing at the beginning of each chapter of their fiction âI DO NOT OWN X, I AM NOT MAKING ANY MONEY OFF X, I WRITE ONLY FOR THE LOVE OF A/B. X is the property of Y, please do not sue me I am 13 and you will only get 37 centsâ because I am and this is why you donât fuck around with copyright law. Fanworks have come a long way in respectability and legality. But profiting off it can still get you in trouble. Be careful kiddos.
The OTW has done so much in getting non-profit transformative works to be legalized, especially getting copyright exceptions for vidding. Letâs not screw this up now, guys.
The discussion of copyright could be refined a little hereâŚbut letâs be blunt, to some extent, it doesnât matter.  Regardless of the law, AO3 was established with a deliberately noncommercial ethosâin fact, in specific response to contemporary attempts to commercialize fandom.  The rule exists in service of that ethos.  Donât like that âbullshit?â  Well, then, I guess you should just go read and publish fic on that other free platform that doesnât exist to turn you and your personal data into a product to sell off to capitalismâs highest bidders.  Whatâs that?  You say that doesnât exist?  Hmmmm, I wonder if thatâs a coincidence.
Also? Iâm of the personal opinion that profiting off of fanwork is just kinda⌠I dunno. It shouldnât be the main form of your artistic income. Sure, you can do commissions and use that as a supplement if money is tight, and fanwork is a great way to get yourself out there, but if you plan to make money, fan art and writing should really only be a stepping stone to your own original creations. We make fanwork in the spirit of it being free and shared for all to enjoy. We make it because we enjoy the original creation and respect the property of its owners. To take that and then concentrate on turning it into personal profit kinda dampens the spirit of fandom for me.
How do you make the flowers for the flower crown? like specifically what material is it? Its super cool and I want to make one I just don't know what I need.
Hmm, I just reblogged it from another site, but I think I can help you in terms of what to buy and how to do it. If you click the link, itâll take you to the complete photo post that shows you what you need. In any event, hereâs the list:
Nail polish
Floral wire, a thin bendable wire is ideal. 26 Gauge is fine.Â
Floral Tape      Â
Wire cutters/scissors
a pencil or cylindrical object to wrap the petals around
Ribbon (optional)
DIRECTIONS
First, youâre gonna need to make the crown. You can do this by using the wire you already have or you can use an old headband or anything that you like that resembles a headpiece. Thicker wire is also fine for this step.    As you can see, OP twisted two pieces of wire together and left loops at the end (to attach the ribbon). Then they covered it in brown floral tape.
The second step is to make the flowers. Using your pencil/cylindrical object, twist the wire around it to create a âpetalâ. Repeat this until you have at least a couple of petals. 3-6 is usually fine, itâs really your call.Â
SLIGHTLY bend the petals back to create a natural looking petal.
After you are satisfied with the shape of your petals, cut out your flower, leaving some wire left to attach it to your crown.Â
Repeat the first few steps and make the rest of your flowers.
Take one of your flowers and CAREFULLY apply nail polish to it, one petal at a time. Think of it like making bubbles. It may be easier to pour the nail polish in a flat plate and dip it, or dip the entire flower into the polish.Repeat this for all your remaining flowers.
Twist the two ends of your flowers together to form a âstemâ.
Wrap the stems with floral tape, preferably with the same color you used in the base of the crown.Repeat this for all your remaining flowers.
The third step will be attaching the flowers to your crown. You can do this a few ways. One way is to wrap the stems around the crown. Another way is to just wrap the stems with floral tape as you go along, like the OP did.Do this until all your flowers have been attached to your crown.
At this point, you can tie the ribbons to the loops like OP did, or decorate it any other way you like. :)
Enjoy your new floral crown!
TIPS
You can purchase most of the items in Walmart, Michaelâs or any craft or flower store. You can also order it online. :)
REMEMBER, this tutorial is just a guide. If you donât want to use brown floral tape or if you prefer using the green floral wire, donât be afraid to change it up. You can use any color or material your heart desires.
Iâll refer you to an ask where I gave a few tips. ASK by starry-ponds
And here are some completed flower crowns from some lovely tumblr users. :) Â Alyssa & Rebekka
And here is the original link to the post. Itâs in Russian.
I also happened across a video that someone linked to in one of the reblogs of my post. It involves using glue as a base that helps make the process easier (and more durable).
Sorry for replying late. I hope this helps you with making your own crown. :)
fellow artists,
if you have an ipod or iphone or ipad or whatever then Please download the app âMake a Poseâ
it gives you a lil figure like this
and you can make them do whatever you want!! Like
Took me about 1.4 minutes to make this sad little guy itâs Really easy to get the hang of
they Happy
you can change the camera angle so easy too so you can get perspective + foreshortening reference
THIS IS ALL FREE TOO but if you pay $2 you unlock the ability to have two figures onscreen at the same time so you can make COUPLE POSES
AND YOU CAN CHANGE THE LIGHTING,
you can also make rooms and place some objects or characters like so:

writing an autistic character when you are not autistic - a masterpost
completely double spaced version on google docs here â this post is more blocky for the sake of peopleâs dashboards, but still long so people will be less likely to glaze over it. my apologies if that makes it hard to read
things to look for and avoid in an autistic character
⢠symptoms only manifesting as ânonverbal and rockingâ ⢠super smart / living calculator ⢠super dumb / doesnât understand anything ⢠all the symptoms you can come up with for them are âawkwardâ and âhas special interest(s)â (please do more research) ⢠trains, technology, and/or math as special interests ⢠acting like a child ⢠getting treated like a baby ⢠unreasonably cruel and uncaring about othersâ reactions to them being cruel ⢠if theyâre comparable to sheldon from the big bang theory, start over ⢠animal comparisons ⢠a lack of feelings ⢠please no stories about what itâs like to be autistic told by allistics
the right way to write an autistic person
⢠lots of symptoms, including secondary ones not included on a general diagnosis requirement list (hereâs a list i rather like that was made by an autistic person â their blog is also a good resource) ⢠having a good amount of general knowledge and actually talking about it (i cannot believe that i have to say this) ⢠talking about things outside of special interests (againâŚ. come onâŚâŚâŚ.) (special interests are usually the default things our brains go to when theres no stimulation or we want to entertain ourselves â it isnât literally all we think or talk about ever. if a conversation has no connections to a special interest, reconsider having your autistic character bring it up in a context that is not an introduction.) ⢠explicitly expressed to be capable of attraction and romantic feelings â if your character is an adult, add sexual feelings to this point ⢠capable of general functioning, just with a disability that makes it more difficult â not a walking disability (âŚ.sigh) ⢠a wide amount of feelings and emotional turmoil (but perhaps only being able to express it in limited ways) ⢠weâre people ⢠just people whose brains are wired differently
things to avoid in research for an autistic character
⢠autism moms / autism blogs and websites not run by autistic people ⢠any affiliation with autism $peaks means you should walk away and never look back ⢠a scientist trying to create explanations for what autistic people do without actually asking / not mentioning asking autistic people ⢠anything about a cure for autism ⢠a person that âworked with autistic kidsâ phrased in the same way as âworked with animalsâ ⢠talking about autistic people as if they are mysteries, are like animals, or are otherwise othered weirdos instead of people
things to look for in research for an autistic character
⢠actual autistic people talking about their experiences and symptoms ⢠just stick to that and youâre good but itâs hard to find sometimes ngl. just look for the above red flags
things i would personally like to see in an autistic character
⢠less easy to swallow sadness and more destructive anger. i would love to see a canonically autistic character who was frustrated easily by small things and had trouble communicating why ⢠not a story about being autistic, a story that happens to have a character or characters who are autistic â it isnât pointed out or questioned, theyâre right at home with the rest of the cast and not othered (a la symmetra from overwatch) ⢠intensive sensory issues / small sounds making large reactions ⢠clear communications about not liking x sensory thing (for example being touched) ⢠poor motor skills / clumsiness and not being laughed at for it ⢠walking funny (body bent downwards, walking very fast, walking slowly, big strides, shuffling, stiffness, etc)  â no one treats it as if itâs funny or something totally strange ⢠a big personality that has a presence so they canât be cast aside (but feel free to have quiet characters too) â if this was along with being nonverbal they would probably leap to being one of my favorite characters ever ⢠a fear of asking for clarification on sarcasm or jokes because of past experiences and an arc about the character becoming more comfortable asking questions
>> if any fellow autistic people want to add something, feel free <<
allistics are encouraged to rb this
