“No, it’s cute. Shut up,” Buck says, very cheerfully flicking a lighter and bringing the flame to a candle on one cupcake, then a second.
He’s grinning so wide his eyes are crinkled as he brings the cupcakes over to where Eddie’s sitting. “Okay, two minutes. You got a wish ready?”
Eddie takes in Buck. Sitting across from him in his kitchen, two homemade cupcakes in front of him– one with blue frosting, one pink, a swipe of pink frosting on his chin (he just finished icing the cupcakes a few minutes ago) and so much love in his eyes directed at Eddie that his face glows with it.
Eddie smiles back at Buck, asks, “What if I don’t have a wish?”
“Eddie. You have to have a wish. It’s, like, birthday law.”
“Birthday law?’
“Yes,” Buck says, utterly serious. “If you can’t think of something for yourself, at least wish for world peace or something.”
“Right.”
Buck glances at his phone. “11:59! Go, go. Blow out the candle. And make a wish. You have to.”
Eddie closes his eyes, leans into where Buck is holding the cupcake with blue frosting closer to his face. He thinks for a moment, then blows a breath, extinguishing the candle. He opens his eyes to Buck’s sweet smile.
“Okay. Your turn.” Eddie picks up the pink frosted cupcake, bringing it to Buck’s face. “This is still stupid, for the record,” he says, but the grin on his face is so wide his cheeks hurt.
Buck closes his eyes and makes an exaggerated thinking face to make Eddie laugh. Eddie laughs. Buck’s eyes open and he’s smiling as he blows out his candle.
“So, what’d you wish for?” Buck asks as they eat their cupcakes.
“Isn’t it bad luck to tell someone your wish?”
Buck hums. “I think if we both tell each other our wishes, it cancels that out.”
“Can’t argue with that logic.”
They sit in silence for a second.
“...So?” Buck says.
“So, what?”
“So… your wish, Eddie!”
Eddie smirks. “Oh, didn’t realize I had to go first.”
Buck rolls his eyes.
“Alright, fine. I wished– I wished that everything stays the way it is right now. I don’t want anything more.”
“Really?”
“Yep. Everything’s pretty great right now. Work is good, Chris is doing great, I have a dumb boyfriend who makes me wait to celebrate my birthday until a minute before it’s over. I’m pretty happy.”
Buck melts. His big smile softens into something more private, just for Eddie. He shifts forward, catching Eddie’s mouth in a gooey, sugary sweet kiss. Eddie reciprocates happily, sliding a hand up the side of Buck’s neck.
“What was your wish?” Eddie asks, breaking the kiss but staying close to Buck, brushing their noses together.
Buck pulls him back into another kiss, nipping Eddie’s bottom lip teasingly.
“World peace, of course,” he mumbles against Eddie’s lips.

and buck visibly reboots at this information. 'i...he did that? for me?'
eddie raises an eyebrow at him. 'yeah, he did it for me, too.'
'but you're-- you're his dad.'
a shrug. 'don't see what difference it makes,' eddie says it like it's a given, like it's nothing special at all. 'his dad, his buck-- can't keep that kid away from the people he loves.'
and buck does that exhale-laugh that he does, blinking a little too quick. 'yeah,' he says. 'i guess so.'
