It's great to get validation and confirmation that you're not alone in your experiences, but you also need to remember this: If you experience it, it's your experience, you don't need approval from others to prove it to be real. You don't need to ask everyone "is it possible to [experience]" because if you experience it, then it's possible. You experienced it, after all! No matter how uncommon, your experiences hold value, and that value isn't up to the community to decide.

It took me some time to identify my primary altertype after discovering alterhumanity as a concept, but pretty soon I became well aware that if I am any nonhuman animal at all i’m certainly a red wolf. Red wolves once roamed freely among much of the southeastern United States but in 1980 were declared extinct in the wild, this is still true for much of the country although there is one place where they live without the confinement of fences, that being Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge on the eastern most peninsula of North Carolina’s coast. Typically every summer I take a trip to the Outer Banks of North Carolina to visit my distant family and swim in the ocean, relax on the dunes, visit my favorite bar, etc, so last summer I made my way down to the wildlife refuge for a (albeit unlikely) chance to see red wolves in the wild. Unfortunately I didn’t see any wolves in person but I throughly enjoyed the visitor center and it’s exhibits, there I saw taxidermy wolves and a few pups too as well as a pristine wolf skeleton and tons of footage, I also got to touch a blaze orange tracking collar which filled me with euphoria and i’ve wanted one ever since. But by far the coolest thing that happened to me was the interaction I had with the staff member on duty at the visitor center, when she noticed I was wearing a fox tail she complimented it and proceeded to share how she was an alterhuman in the 70s, she talked about how she wore gear and had a pack of other anti-war alterhumans who expressed themselves openly, and then encouraged me to continue to be true to myself no matter how tough the political situation becomes in this country. It was incredibly inspiring and I haven’t felt so understood and respected by a complete stranger since, for the rest of the trip I felt very connected to my altertype and each location I visited (the endless beaches, massive dunes, pinaceous forests, etc) I saw myself as a red wolf, experiencing the land through a wolf’s eyes and imagining what it looked like before it was destroyed and restructured by the colonialists. To this day that is still the most intense and remarkable experience I have had with my alterhumanity and I think of it all the time, in my opinion red wolves are some of the most interesting creatures on the planet and they deserve so much more recognition.
On the subject of "they're just attention seeking" inside and outside of system communities. 💓
I have a lot of thoughts on this subject!!
Firstly, I will never claim someone is faking their experiences! I would rather believe someone who was mistaken, or lying, as opposed to risking dismissing someone who was struggling. The idea of conditional allyship is difficult for everyone involved, and often makes the groups people are trying to protect equally afraid that, if they step "out of line" they will too, be ridiculed, shamed or isolated.
I also don't believe we should insult, demean or ostracize people who are discovered to be faking, because compassion, and desire to support instead of scrutinize, is important.
Also, attention seeking always (!!) has a reason. Someone might not be given adequate attention; be taught they need to be dependent on attention to exist; be struggling and not sure how else to express that; or, in financial distress and relying on attention to gain money for survival. It's not a meaningless mechanism, or one that deserved to be shamed. Even without a negative reason, we are, generally, social creatures!!
I would also say that viewing "attention seeking" as invalidating experiences mayyy be rooted in misogyny (this isn't saying people who say it are misogynistic, please understand I am not saying this as an accusation!!) due to the history of "female hysteria" and the perception of "attention seeking" and "being dramatic" invalidating people subject to misogyny. We even see this today, where people will seek out medical care, mental health support, or general emotional catharsis, and be reduced to a "hysterical woman who is dramatic and attention seeking" and, consequently, this might be something that would be helpful to consider, and untangle!
There are also some ableist undertones in the concept, as some people (e.g those with HPD or NPD) are dependent on attention, and don't always search for that in ways that are ideal. Everyone deserves compassion, and understanding. 💓
