Built in 1890, The Fergus Falls Regional Treatment Center (originally the Third Minnesota State Hospital for the Insane) was designed based on the Thomas Kirkbride, M.D. architectural model of an asylum, to provide "moral treatment" (including exercise, farming, entertainment, and classes in extracurricular activities) for the mentally ill. The facility closed in 2005. The building has been in a waxing and waning state of limbo in an attempt to preserve the building but funding to do so has proven difficult and there is concern it may be demolished. The building's future is uncertain. If you haven't been here, I highly recommend the trip. The building is absolutely immense - in size, intricacy, beauty, and history. (And Fergus Falls is one of those quaint rural towns worth the day trip.) And if you have one of those rich eccentric uncles, well, hit up the city of Fergus Falls - they may have something he'd be interested in. . . . . . #fergusfallsregionaltreatmentcenter #fergusfalls #minnesota #kirkbride #architecture #archilovers #abandoned #abandonedminnesota #abandonedplaces #abandonedasylum #history #historicalplace #historicalbuilding #historygram #saveourhistory #historylover #visitfergusfalls #exploremn #capturemn #thisismymn #onlyinmn #minnesotaphotographers #minnstagrammers #wanderlust #getoutside #explore #shotoniphone (at Fergus Falls Regional Treatment Center)
