The MC is a girl who we’ll call Sue. Sue is a Good Girl™, Sue is Not Like Other Girls™, she is pale and awkward and a virgin and has somehow managed to find herself a Bad Boy™ for a boyfriend. We’ll call him Dickhead.

Now Dickhead as previously stated is a bit of dick, he tries to pressure Sue into sex because he knows she is The One™ but he loves her really so it’s okay. Except it’s not okay because Sue is a Good Girl™ and holding out till marriage which he’s fine with except he’s got such a bad case of blue balls that one night walking home an attractive stranger lures him into an alley with the words “hey stud” and he follows, dick out before she’s even finished her sentence. Well turns out that was a mistake for Dickhead because she’s a vampire, but not just any vampire, a Dick Biting Vampire. So what started out as a skeevy blow job behind a club that he’ll feel bad about in the morning, turns into him being bitten on the dick and drained of his life essence and left for dead. Except DBV fucked up and now he’s a vampire. Are you still with me? Good, cause it’s about to get weirder.

Realizing he is now an abomination, Dickhead flees, becoming a creature of the night and feeding on animals rather than humans to repent for being such an asshole in life. Sue meanwhile is heartbroken, but carries on valiantly with her life and goes to bed each night crying for the loss of her One True Love™ who she would do anything to bring back. Well guess what Sue, Dickhead never really left you! He’s been “instinctively protecting her from rapists” by hiding out on her roof and fighting hobos who try to get to her open window via the fire escape for months now. Because that’s not fucking terrifying at all.

Upon learning of his predicament and how it happened, Sue can do nothing but blame herself. Oh if only she’d let him touch her secret places, then perhaps all of this could be avoided! Meanwhile Dickhead is having another dilemma of his own, realizing too late that his vampire powers have given him super senses and now he can smell her blood and he can’t decide whether he wants to get with her or eat her. And I don’t mean in the French sense. But he is strong! And over comes his base manly vampire instincts and neither rapes not kills her. Hurrah! And this is so romantic that Sue gives it up, but not before she launches into a theory about how in all fairy tales, True Love saves the day, so maybe her magical pure vagina that has never been touched by anyone, not even her, can bring him back to life. So Dickhead being a dickhead agrees and rips her clothes off, but not before he takes one last moment to marvel at the beauty of her purity, because he will never again look on her again and know she is Pure.

If you’ve only vomited once by now, I applaud your resolve.

So they hop on the good foot and do the nasty, except she is literally so pure in spirit, her flesh burns his. And I quote you from memory because these words are burned into my soul: “her breasts bit into his hands, like crucifix nail nipples tearing at his flesh, but he did not care because he loved her so and couldn’t stop”

This phrase haunts me. I dread that it will be the last thing I think about on my death bed and my last words will literally be “god fucking dammit” as I die, carrying that mental image with me into the afterlife. My own solace is in knowing that I inflicted it on other people too, like @ahzuri who is somehow still with me after all these years.

When the magical burning sex fails to heal him and leaves her bruised, battered and broken with “a dainty blue bells of bruises around her secret flower” (I am genuinely quoting this, I could never make something as horrendous as this up without being on acid) Dickhead leaves. Yeah. Off he fucks, leaving her to the mercy of the hobos at her window, and into the night to be the true monster he really is. But wait, there’s more. Remember the dick biting vampire? Well turns out she has figured out she made him into a vampire and has also been stalking HIM and is totally jealous of Sue, so tries to kill her. But again Sues Purity saves her, because sex before marriage which was done out of True Love is not a sin, so she is still a spiritual virgin and I’ll be honest, I started drinking heavily at this point and it’s all a bit of a blur.

A fight ensues some pages later after Dickhead returns, realizing the mistake he has made. And he rescues Sue from the Dick Biter, but not before he assaults Dick Biter, and calls her a slut for luring innocent men into alleys cuts her heart out by cutting her breasts off, at which point i screamed “THAT’S NOT HOW YOU REACH THE HEART” and my brain short circuited completely and I have no idea how it ends because I realized there was 30 pages left and my soul couldn’t take it. I emailed the chief editor like ?????!!!!!!????!!!!!! and the book was immediately pulled from the work line and the author dismissed from the publishing house. Turns out she was a friend of a friend and that was how she got the manuscript past our entry levels for requirement.

The fact that you can put each character and plot point next to each other and they are the exact same. Says something. I didn’t think they were going to have much of a case. But when it’s this similar. Down to a rebellious sister whose cooking is mocked. I have no sympathy for CC and I will no longer be supporting her books/shows/endeavors.

The first Dark-Hunter book was published in 2002. Whereas City of Bones, the first in the Mortal Instruments, was first published in 2007. And before people continue to defend Clare, remember that she has a history of plagarism in her fanworks.

Also, there’s this from the initial report of the lawsuit:

 On Friday, Kenyon sued Cassandra Clare aka Judith Rumelt aka Judith Lewis, claiming her “Shadowhunter” series initially used Kenyon’s trademark “darkhunter.”     After Kenyon demanded that Clare remove the word “darkhunter” from her work, Clare used the term “shadowhunter” for her protagonists instead, according to the lawsuit. The word “hunter” was also removed from the book title.     Clare’s book, “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,” was published in 2007. Since then, Clare has expanded her use of the term “shadowhunter” despite assurances that she would not, according to Kenyon.

I’ve read the first three books (but they’ve been on my reread list for a while) in the series and I can confirm from my recollections that having read through that list? The similarities are pretty fucking damning.

CLARE’s works are now listed on CLARE’s website, “shadowhunters.com” under the category of “Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunters” and include the series of “Mortal Instruments” novels along with “The Infernal Devices,” “The Dark Artifices,” “Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy,” “The Bane Chronicles,” “The Last Hours,” and “The Shadowhunter’s Codex”, each a “Shadowhunter Book” (and collectively, the “Shadowhunter Series”).

13. The Dark-Hunter Series and the Shadowhunter Series are so similar that CLARE’S own publisher mistakenly printed 100,000 copies of a Shadowhunter Book referencing the DarkHunter Mark on the cover. Upon written demand by PLAINTIFF, CLARE’s publisher destroyed tens of thousands of the Shadowhunter Book that contained PLAINTIFF’s Dark-Hunter Mark on its cover. Despite the destruction of tens of thousands of copies of this Shadowhunter Book, thousands of Shadowhunter Books including the Dark Hunter Marks on the cover have now been sold and substantial commercial confusion has resulted.

But don’t ask me. In politics, usually nobody listens to you unless you’re a 45 year old man. I’d assume the horror that is Twilight would transcend all ages, races, and genders, but some people genuinely like it. Apparently. 

I’m guessing the third one with the girl though. Women can’t dislike Twilight. If they do, they’re lying. 

But, that begs the question. I’ve been critical of books written for men too…

The first one mildly intrigued me, as it was possibly the first vampire novel I’d read in years, but I nearly became physically ill reading Breaking Dawn, and had to force myself to pick the book back up (after 5 weeks) to finish it after reaching Jake’s imprint on Nessie. Personally, I find any person who finds the idea of a grown man/werewolf imprinting on a newborn not worrisome in need of significant therapy…. but that’s just me. 

But yeah, the imprinting thing is insane. Just… insane. It’s like Meyers read a very watered down A/B/O fic and decided to throw away the sex and keep the unbreakable-bond-for-genetically-fitist-children some of them have…. Never mind that, because of Bella’s really short pregnancy, this means Jake made out with the mother of his imprint about six months or so before said imprint was born. Which is freaky in and of itself…. 

I’ve heard some really creepy discussions about the consequences of the fact that Jacob was in love with his imprint’s mother. There’s just…nothing ok about it.

At least a lot of the fanbase agreed. They’d come on board to have their happily ever after, not to have pedophilia and brainwashing.

Yeah, I try to avoid thinking about the pedophilia and brainwashing implications too much for my own sanity. The worst part is, how did Meyers think her fanbase would be okay with that? I mean, the whole Team Edward and Team Jacob thing might have led her to think people cared about who both of them ended up with, even if it wasn’t Bella. Personally, I’ve always been a bit of a Jacob/Leah fan, if only at first because of the huge biblical irony of it all, but…

I honestly thought that Jacob/Leah, if Jacob was in his New Moon personality, before Meyer tried to make him more like Edward, could have been an interesting dynamic. There’s the huge Biblical irony, there’s the fact that Leah herself is a really interesting character, and it would have had to force Jacob as a character to realize that the werewolves had just as many problems as the vampires did and some levels. I mean, there are still major problems, but…in the hands of a better writer…

Leah was probably one of the most interesting characters, if not the most interestin in the group. Particularly since she showed one of the worst aspects of imprinting. But you’re right, it’s probably a good thing that Bella remained the focus.

I always remember thinking it odd that there wasn’t more sympathy for Leah from the other members of the pack. I mean, yes, Sam imprinted on Rachel so it wasn’t like he had a choice, and, yes, she possibly could have handled it better, but when it comes down to brass tacks Leah is the one who was wronged. That should at least earn her 50% of the sympathy. Especially when she lost so much else when she became a werewolf (though I am curious what Meyer hoped to accomplish by making her the only female wolf, other than to make the Leah/Sam/Rachel thing more obvious.)

The thing with Leah was that while at first that mentioned that Leah was a sympathetic character, Meyer always treated her like a harpy that just couldn’t let go. Sam treated her like a nuisance, even her brother Seth says how ‘she ruins everything’. In addition her change causes her father to have a heart attack, and she can’t have kids when she clearly wants to. She’s truly the character who really needed the most sympathy. Even Emily had the community behind her, but Leah seemed to just remind everyone that there was something utterly messed up about imprinting and everyone hated her for it.

(Not going into the almost childish ‘girls have cooties’ sexism)
