whew okay this poll is finally over. my notes can return to their normal state. thank g-d. some observations/comments :
i am aware that the phrasing could have been better. i was made aware of it the first time someone said so and so the approximately forty-seven following comments saying the same thing were unnecessary.
the notes are full of usamericans saying āoh thatās not that bad !ā and non-usamericans going ājesus fucking christā. usamericans i am taking you by the shoulders. this is an absolutely ridiculous proportion. there are approximately 195 countries in the world and more than half of the population of this website comes from One of them. thatās insane.
some interesting discussion about how, from a non-usamerican perspective, the website feels much more usamerican than this poll would indicate. i would venture to say that thatās because of a mixture of a lot of the site culture being fundamentally usamerican-based & an internalized sense of american exceptionalism prevailing amongst many usamerican bloggers, which leads to things like for example non-usamericans reblogging usamerican political posts but not vice-versa or usamericans neglecting to mention which country their post is about because they assume everyone else is also american
furthermore there has been some objection to the use of the term usamerican, to which i say : kindly shut the fuck up manifest destiny you do not own two whole continents containing almost 30 countries <3
also a lot of people called this poll biased for two main reasons : first, itās influenced by the fact that i posted it and it travels through reblogs that can be traced back to me. second, itās in english. iām going to respond to these one at a time :
yes, the point of origin will influence the results of the poll. frankly, based on what i tend to post about and considering my friends & mutuals on this site, i think it probably (at least at first) made it so the amount of non-usamericans was over-represented. but all that notwithstanding, this poll has over 27.000 votes. thatās more than some legitimate surveys cited by actual governments. and it has travelled very far outside my circles, as evidenced by the amount of deeply annoying people in my notes this week that i hope to never interact with again. it has largely stayed in fandom and fandom-adjacent parts of tumblr, which is fine, since thatās the section of tumblr i was trying to survey in the first place. idc what aesthetic photo blogger tumblr is doing thatās none of my business.
yes, the poll being in english affects who responds to it. thatās on purpose. i am surveying english-speaking tumblr.
also special mention to the person who said this poll is biased because tumblr is not as popular outside the USA. like. i know. clarifying that is kind of the whole point of the poll. anyway
shout-out to the nuance people who did actually answer you guys had a lot of interesting things to say about what it means to be usamerican. anyone reading this i do recommend reading some of the nuance tags that have been left to expand your horizons etc
