My family did everything right when they came here 12 years ago from Venezuela. Went through proper channels with all their documents in hand. None of them have a criminal record, not even traffic tickets. All work and/or go to school. They learned English, one started a photography business, one is a senior banker who turned a failing bank into a successful one in one year. They pay their taxes, keep up with their registrations, pay their bills on time.
Their asylum was denied twice. Now pretty much my entire family is being kicked out of the US, having to leave in 70 days, abandon everything they've built here, and have to return to a country that's dangerous for them to be in in the first place. That's why they were seeking asylum here. Even the kids, one with chronic health issues, weren't spared.
They did everything right and fucking racism still won at the end of the day.
Venezuelans who sought asylum in the US that are returning to the country either voluntarily or not, are being punished and put in prison. Prisons where people go missing, suffer abuse or die from the conditions. My family have been politically targeted by the Maduro regime for years. Now I'm worried I'll never see them again. Just because Maduro is in prison doesn't mean his goons still aren't committing atrocities in the country and punishing the people.
