The kind of courtroom etiquette imposed by most legal systems sounds like it was made up for a fictional court in a LARP. I find it baffling and I don't know how anyone has sufficient patience to take it seriously. Your life and actions will be adjudicated by the Special Boy (you'll recognize him because he wears Special Boy robes and sits in the Special Boy chair) and when you talk to the Special Boy you have to stand up and say "Special Boy" or he can wave his hands at the attending knight and have you thrown in the dungeon.

this shit has bothered me literally my entire life since I was old enough to learn about and understand it.

"Contempt of court" is one of the most vile things any government can imprison someone for. Because god forbid anyone has contempt for the organization thats unjustly imprisoning or even killing them.

But then on top of that it's completely up to the fucking judge to determine what "contempt of court" is. He just declare you "in contempt of court" for simply not bowing and scraping to stroke his ego and throw you in prison for it. And they do it all the time. Absolutely vile.
