Yeah this is actually pretty much exactly what is going on. It’s why anti-oxidants are such a big deal. Bonus fact: oxygen oxidizes stuff in your cells or, in other words, it’s not toxic, just setting you on fire very very slowly.
What if there are aliens out there but they subsist on entirely different substances and they’re just scared as shit of us and our crazy ass hell planet? Once in a while some alien anthropologist type suggests checking out the people on this inhabited planet out towards the galaxy’s edge. The other aliens just look at the naive academic with horror. okay but…that is actually what went down on earth about 2.5 billion years ago.
Earth was doing just fine with a mostly nitrogen/carbon dioxide atmosphere and everyone was happy to go on living in anaerobic bliss and then cyanobacteria suddenly hit the scene, altered the atmosphere composition so that there was a ton of oxygen gas and killed practically everything (97% or more of all species on earth).
We are literally descendants of the DEATH BREATHERS and cyanobacteria is our deadly mother.
The cyanobacteria holocaust is so big, it doesn’t even have a cool name; it’s just called “The Great Oxygenation Event”; the *second* most apocalyptic extinction event in our planet’s history is the one that’s called THE GREAT DYING (the Permian-Triassic event, about 252 million years ago).
This shit makes like the rock-throwing that wiped out the dinosaurs look like kindergarten.

Had a conversation earlier about whether Temeraire counts as Young Adult, and I feel fairly confident no, it's adult fiction. Not to say it's not perfectly approachable by teenagers-- in fact, I believe a great deal of adult fiction is, that's why we teach it in schools-- but just that I think that was Novik's intention, and its born out by its language, style, and primary themes. All that said-- if we can imagine an alternative version of the series entirely from Temeraire's POV, and that has the potential to be the purest YA that ever YAed. "Hi, my name is Temeraire. No last name, I don't need one. I'm named after one of the most magnificent sailing ships ever, because my captain won my egg in naval battle. Egg? Oh, I suppose I forgot to mention; I'm a dragon. In fact, I'm the only black dragon in all of Britain. My captain-- who's a gentleman, by the way-- and I went to a special dragon training school. The other dragons made fun of me at first because I look different, but I earned their friendship by showing off my keen intelligence, combat prowess, and my special sonic blast abilities that no other dragon has. Now I'm on a journey across the ocean, because it turns out I'm a secret Chinese prince. One of the most common complaints I see about the Temeraire series is that the pacing is uneven. And like. That’s not an unfair complaint. The pacing can be strange. But I do think the prevalence of that specific complaint among especially blogs that are doing things like posting “reviews of all the fantasy novels I read this month” speaks to a lack of understanding of where the books are coming from, genre-wise.
Novik is a style chameleon. It’s what makes her fanfic good. Temeraire isn’t fanfic, but she’s still doing her chameleon thing with it, and the style she’s adopted isn’t from fantasy. It’s historical fiction, and more narrowly Patrick O’Brian.
And in that context the reaction isn’t, “wow, I can’t believe it took them half a book just to get to China,” the reaction is “whew! I’m so glad it only took half of one book to get to China!”
