The most revolutionary thing I've learned about Blackness is that our English is not at all "broken"
It was 2012 and I was a "white washed" (not real but you know what that means) junior in undergrad and an entire chapter included in this textbook was dedicated to our pidgin/dialect whichever your argument. 14 years later and the amount of borrowing with and without permission of rest of English is truly a marvel to the point where things I know damn well are just AAVE are attributed to wide ranging sources such as "Gen Z/Alpha slang" and "gay lingo" and "internet speak" in general. Our range
These are just a few of our many common grammatical rules:
Habitual "Be": In Standard English "He is working" means right now or generally. In AAVE "He be working" specifically means he works regularly or habitually, a distinction that Standard English can't make without adding extra words.
Copula Deletion: Dropping forms of the verb "to be" in places where Standard English requires them ("She tired" instead of "She is tired" or "They going" instead of "They are going")
Double Negatives: In Standard English, two negatives make a positive. In AAVE, using multiple negatives ("She ain't never going") simply adds emphasis to the negation, a common feature in many of the world's languages.
Metathesis: switching sounds within a word, the most famous example being "ask" as "aks," a pronunciation that has roots in Old English.
Remote "Been": When you say "I been knew that" the stressed "been" means you've known it for a long time, remotely in the past, which doesn't exist in Standard English without adding extra words.
Completive "Done": "I done told you already" is a way of saying the action is finished and the matter is settled with an emphasis on finality or frustration.
Subject-Verb Disagreement: In AAVE verbs are often uninflected for the third person ("She walk" instead of "She walks") to simplify conjugation.
I love being Black, we're so smart! We been developed our slice of language despite the slavery and diaspora
Yes! Most languages have redundancies in them like that, and often dialects end up dropping them because they’re not actually necessary for meaning. “She over there working” is perfectly understandable to anyone who speaks English.
I’m white, and the kind of hyperlexic neurodivergent where I mimic people around me without realizing at first what I am doing. Which people tend to read as me making fun of them on purpose, so I try to control it but it happens anyway.
All of which is annoyingly wordy background to: in my last job I worked with a lot of people who spoke AAVE, and I tried to be careful not to mimic it because I absolutely did not want my colleagues to think I was mocking them.
It happened eventually anyway (and by the time it did I don’t THINK anyone thought I was making fun of them, thank goodness!) But when it did, I found myself noticing and thinking this. Standard English felt awkward and wordy. Why do we say “is” every six seconds anyway?
I don’t work there any more so I’ve mostly reverted, but I definitely remember that. The people who look down on a perfectly understandable dialect are very dumb. And almost certainly racist jerks.

Reducing rock as a genre to "straight white guys with guitars" gives me similar vibes to people who say all contemporary literature consists of middle aged guys talking about divorce and younger women.
While it's true that in the West white male artists (The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd etc.) were the ones most heavily promoted, archived and mythologized from the 60's to the 90's; were the ones labeled as "classic rock" (ugh, I hate this term) by white critics, journalists, radio and record labels, people still confuse who was amplified with whom the genre belongs to.
In fact, rock wouldn't exist without black artists and musical traditions: blues (Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley), R&B (Chuck Berry, Little Richard), gospel (Sister Rosetta Tharpe) and jazz influences.
Artists like Fats Domino weren't the exceptions, they were the architects.
60's-70's when rock becomes "serious"?
Jimi Hendrix. Arguably, the most influential guitarist ever.
But also Santana, Sly & the Family Stone, Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy, massively influential), Parliament-Funkadelic, Arthur Lee (Love), War.
70's-80's with punk and hardcore?
Death (proto-punk before the Ramones), Bad Brains, Poly Styrene (X-Ray Spex), Fishbone, ESG, Bush Tetras.
90's-00's?
Rage Against the Machine, TV on the Radio, Kele Okereke (Bloc Party), Karen O (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Chino Moreno (Deftones), The Mars Volta, Carlos Dengler (Interpol).
Today?
Mitski, Tosin Abasi & Javier Reyes (Animals As Leaders), Toro y Moi, Khruangbin, Big Joanie, Bartees Strange, Meet Me @ The Altar, The Linda Lindas, Yves Tumor.
A lot of these artists are rebranded as "indie" or "alternative" instead of "rock," but come on.
What about metal and heavy?
Living Colour, Sevendust, Body Count, Alien Weaponry (Māori metal), Bloodywood, Chthonic (Taiwanese), Tengger Cavalry.
Some influential women?
Joan Jett & The Runaways, Pat Benatar, Deborah Dyer, Tracy Chapman, Patti Smith, Janis Joplin, Dolores O‘Riordan, Sinead O‘Connor, Heart, Melissa Etheridge, kd lang, Stevie Nicks, Bikini Kill, PJ Harvey, St. Vincent, HAIM, Big Thief, the Riot grrrl movement.
Queer or gender non-conforming rock?
Prince, Bowie, Freddie Mercury, Anohni, Japanese Breakfast, Perfume Genius.
Some non-Western rock scenes and bands?
Happy End, Yellow Magic Orchestra, RC Succession, X Japan, Boredoms, Luna Sea, Dir En Grey, Tricot, Boris, Mass of the Fermenting Dregs, Band-Maid, Polysics, Chatmonchy, Buck-Tick from Japan. Japanese bands export rock ideas, they don't imitate them.
Shin Jung-hyeon (godfather of Korean rock), Sanulrim, Jaurim, Hyukoh, Se So Neon, DongYang Gozupa, Huremic, Jambinai, Parannoul, Superstring, Tierpark. Korean rock was censored during dictatorships, which shaped its visibility.
Carsick Cars, Re-TROS, Queen Sea Big Shark, He Yong, Brain Failure, Demerit, Chui Wan, Cui Jian, Carsick Cars (China)
No Party for Cao Dong, Gestalt Girl, Sorry Youth, Fire EX., Blacklisted Studio, BB Bomb, Go go Machine Orchestra, Pleiades, Scattered Purgatory (Taiwan)
Nicky Astria, Scaller, Voice Of Baceprot, Marjinal, Superman Is Dead, Burgerkill, Dewa Budjana, Giant Step, God Bless, I Know You Well Miss Clara, Imanissimo, Lefty Fish, Harry Roesli, Shark Move, simakDialog, Tohpati Bertiga, Tohpati Ethnomission (Indonesia)
Up Dharma Down, Eraserheads, The Itchyworms, Fools & Foes, Francis Cang, Statuam Tom's Story, Two Chilekings (Philippines)
Bức Tường, Hạc San (Vietnam)
Mongolian rock with its Khöömii (throat singing): The HU, Altan Urag, Nine Treasures, Hanggai, Tengger Cavalry, Suld.
Panikrama, Thermal and a Quarter, Advaita, Motherjane, Indian Ocean, Bloodywood, Peter Cat Recording Co., Amogh Symphony, Ranjit Barot, Coma Rossi, Coshish, Dark Light, Flaw and Order, Macky Ar, Phenom, Protocol, Saagara (India)
Noori, Entity Paradigm, The Sketches, Takatak, 6LA8, Faraz Anwar, Entity Paradigm, Overload (Pakistan)
Artcell (Bangladesh)
Sanam Pasha, The Yellow Dogs, O-Hum, Kourosh Yaghmaei, Arsames, Confess, Quartet Diminished, Agah Bahari, Mavara, Across The Waves, Ahoora from Iran. Iran's official restrictions have historically barred women from singing solo in public, which means that rock performance and collaboration were driven underground or into exile.
Al Basim (Iraq)
Yalla, Vladimir Badirov (Fromuz), X RELIGION, Sado (Uzbekistan)
Firyuza (Turkmenistan)
Mor ve Ötesi, Moğollar, Altın Gün, Replikas, Barış Manço, Erkin Koray, Cem Karaca (Turkey)
Zamrock, the Zambian psychedelic rock movement. WITCH, Amanaz, Ngozi Family. They blended Hendrix, Sabbath and local rhythms. The movement was later crushed by AIDS and an economic collapse, not lack of creativity.
Saharan & Sahel rock: Tinariwen, Bombino, Tamikrest, Terakaft, Imarhan.
Cairokee, Massar Egbari, Eftekasat, Expiration of a young man, Riverwood, Simplexity (Egypt)
Ofege, The Funkees, Blo, MonoMono (Nigeria)

Some math rock bands I love (since it's one of my fav subgenres):
Toe, paranoid void, GDJYB, tfvsjs, Murphy Radio, tide/edit, Elephant Gym, Stuck in November, Foster Parents, mouse on the keys, Lite, loqto, Clean of Core, a picture of her, Haisuinonasa.
my fellow trans people: all of the answers are in the river. you just need to go to the river and everything will make sense. a lake or ocean are fine substitutions. find the water and go to it. bring your friends. go alone. have a beer.
this really spoke to me, as a trans hippie shut-in.
find the water and go to it. 👍
well i’m sobbing
user blurred for safety reasons
This brings me a lot of sadness, anger and pain, the world fails trans people the most and it doesn't seem to change even today.
I genuinely can see myself being forced to live as an woman, even though I didn't come out, this thought hunts me daily.
Think trans people are too mean about misgendering these days? From 1913 on, Zapatista colonel Amelio Robles Ávila (1889-1984) threatened to shoot anyone who called him a woman with his pistol. He lived openly as a man for 71 years and was supported by his family, peers, and government. I restored and colorized these photos of him from 1915 and 1942.

i can’t decide if this is the single coolest girl in the world for making danger her middle name or the silliest for not seeing the raw power of “millipede danger” which is the greatest name i have ever heard
