Imagine being Anais Mitchell and writing a song about the rhetoric of fascism so incisive and prescient that 10 years later an actual fascist would use that exact rhetoric down to the highly-specific phrasing in his presidential campaign. But also it took 10 years for the project you wrote that song for to move from living room shows to concept album to theater workshop to off-Broadway to Broadway, and its Broadway debut ended up coinciding with said fascist's successful bid for the presidency, and now it looks like your song that you wrote in 2005 is a super unsubtle reference to that one particular and highly-topical politician.
Frankly if I were her I would have started killing.
I was feeling quite depressed yesterday, so I decided to put together this Diego Luna photoshoot by Patrik Giardino , just bc.
I've incuded photos he has at his own site and others that were posted at the Red Bulletin page, but it's no longer available (so, no link).
They shot at an abandoned mental hospital in Mexico City: " The place was both beautiful and creepy. You could hear all the lost souls screaming through the walls. But was fun shooting Diego Luna here for Red Bulletin." Patrik Giardino, 2016
I pretend to play a lot with this photo series...sorry!

Rebelcaptain Whumptober 2026 Sign Up and Prompt List!
Hello and welcome, one and all, my pain-loving freaks, to Rebelcaptain Whumptober 2026! Get ready for an entire month of revelling in the torment of our favorite blorbos.
A note/disclaimer before we get into the nitty gritty: Anyone is welcome to these prompts-- gif makers, editors, artists, etc. but the sign up is for fic writers only, but not signing up does not preclude you from participating if you want! and, if you are a writer, but you aren't sure about taking on a minimum of 2 prompts/days, feel free to participate in whatever capacity is best for you, but please refrain from signing up formally. the sign up is not about exclusivity, it simply a way to ensure there is a work for every prompt, a work for every day, and is a good creative exercise for participants, since you cannot pick your own prompts.
>>HOW IT WORKS<<
SIGN UPS
Follow the link below to the sign up sheet via Google Sheets and fill out the form. Sign ups close at 11:59PM (EST) ON MONDAY, AUGUST 3rd, or until the available slots max out, whichever happens first. There are 15 available slots to allow all participants to be assigned at least 2 prompts.
NOTE: I have left a field for 'preferred number of assigned prompts', as i have had several people express interest, but are only willing/able to commit to 2 prompts (which is totally fine). if you do not have a preference, leave this field blank, and i would urge that most participants refrain from filling this field out if you do not absolutely need to, as it makes it easier to ensure a more even distribution of prompts
Rebelcaptain Whumptober 2026 Sign Up Form
PINCH HITTING
if you are willing or able, please note in the sign up sheet if you would be open to a pinch hit. this is a safety net in the event an author is unable to complete one or more (or even all) of their assigned prompts.
if you need a pinch hitter, please reach out to me via DM either here on tumblr or on discord and let me know ASAP. you do not need to provide a reason. i am not your mom or your boss. shit happens.
each author will be assigned a number during sign up, and the author's numbers who ticked 'Y' on pinch hitter will be randomly picked via a generator. that prompt will be added to their assignments. if multiple prompts are needing a pinch hitter, the next prompt will be randomly assigned to another pinch hitter, and so on.
PROMPT ASSIGNMENT
After signups close, your lovely event host (me) will assign your prompts. This will be done 9:00 PM (EST) TUESDAY, AUGUST 4TH (or maybe sooner, depending upon sign ups). There will be an optional discord group chat that you will be invited to if you chose to provide your discord handle in the sign up sheet. If you do not want to share your handle or do not have a discord account, no problem! the assignments will be provided via the chart below the sign up sheet, linked above. Simply scroll down if you want to check it out!
Assignments are done via a random number generator, dealt out like cards at a poker game (each author gets assigned a prompt until everyone has one, and then the rotation starts again).
after the assignments are done, participants will have ONE chance to either swap ONE prompt with another participant, or choose from the alternate prompt list. This is one reason why the discord is recommended, because if you do not have one, you will not have the ability to do swap prompts.
WRITING AND POSTING
Posting starts OCTOBER 1ST 2026! each prompt will be due for publishing on it's corresponding day. Each work will be published under a Rebelcaptain Whumptober 2026 series on AO3, to be created later. authors are encouraged to post and promote their works on tumblr as well, if able. i personally will be tracking the tag #rcwhumptober2026. reblogs are always, always encouraged!
during the two months before posting begins (and, of course, after), participants are encouraged to employ the discord server (to be created later) for feedback, encouragement, shared writing sprints, or just chatting and getting to know one another.
it is considered polite, in general, for all participants to read and comment on everyone's entries, though it is not a requirement.
THE PROMPT LIST
**each day has been given four prompts to allow for maximum inspiration (hopefully). one 'imagery'-based prompt, a situational/trope prompt, a condition or ailment, and a dialogue prompt. additionally, there are 8 alternate prompts. you are welcome to use and combine as many (or as few) of these prompts for any given day, but please refrain from combining prompts from different days.**
what if i want to be a sicko and write a work for every day (or more prompts than i'm assigned)?
PLEASE DO!! the more the merrier! but only the prompts you are assigned will be added to the Whumptober series on ao3.
A FEW MORE RULES/STIPULATIONS:
Absolutely NO AI!!!!!!!!
no abuse, bigotry, or just plain asshole-ish behavoir
minimum word count will be set at 1,000 words (for assigned participants). one-shots, drabbles, or long fic are all welcome.
all fics (or any other works) must involve the characters of cassian andor and jyn erso, and feature at least one of the prompts from the corresponding day. that's it. AUs, crossovers, any trope or genre is all game.
tagging and content warnings are encouraged, but are not a requirement. this is a Whump event. and a certain reasonable assumption of dangerous content is logical. whump is genre that specifically plays in darker material, and often has violent images and taboo or difficult and potentially triggering content. if you are particularly sensitive to these things, this event might not be for you. feel free to blacklist the tag when posting begins. keep yourself safe!
if you have any questions at all, please send me an ask! anon or not, i don't really care!
also, if anyone has any feedback on these prompts, let me know. this is the first time i've ever come up with a list this long and thorough so i'm insecure... but i think i did okay.
thank you to all who participated in my poll! and most of all, thank you so much to @punchcarddragon
for the help with the graphics!
i am so excited! now get to whumpin'!

fast car by tracy chapman isnt even a song thats God
God I have been struggling so much to explain my irritation with a certain trend I keep running across in LGBTQ+ "cozy fantasy books"
Because everytime I try to verbalize it, it just comes out as sounding like I'm trying to say there's like. An upper limit on how daydreamy an author can be about worlds in which their every fantasy is fulfilled (entire farming village based on mutual aid; where also everyone is queer and/or gender-conforming! And there is little to no conflict! And everyone knows therapy speak and is unfailingly kind and generous and good!)
Because like--there's not, really, an upper limit on these things.
But there is an invisible line of tolerance for me where it turns from "cozy fantasy" to "oh my god grow the fuck up; this is so saccharine it's become one-note and boring and dull that I can't actually ENJOY the low-stakes cozy vibes"
But it sounds like I'm complaining about "there's too many gender queers and not enough homophobia in this book" and it's Not That
Ugh idk take your 2 stars and let me delete this book off my Kobo, I finished it and that's honestly more than I think it deserved.
(a 4.07 average star rating are you FUCKING kidding me)
The problem you're trying to pinpoint is TENSION ISSUES, and cozy fantasy is fuckin RIFE with them. Major chronic problem with the genre, and editors just keep letting authors get away with it instead of developing the story.
Low stakes are fine, utopian settings are fine, even low-conflict is fine -- but you gotta have a source of tension SOMEWHERE, or it pisses people off. If everyone's cooperating together and an amazing team and there's no interpersonal drama, ok great, but hit them with a tornado or a famine or heavy rains that wash out the fields right after planting.
The following have been called the "7 types of conflict" but people always think conflict means fighting or angry feelings, so i do think that "7 types of tension" might be a better wording:
Person vs Person (this is the one that cozy fantasy is most allergic to, and that's ok!)
Person vs Society (cozy fantasy also allergic to this one, we're still fine!)
Person vs Self (inexplicably underutilized, it rules, highly recommend)
Person vs Supernatural
Person vs Fate
Person vs Technology
Person vs Nature
And here is a list of free cozy fantasy tension points for each one of those. Feel free to steal these, adapt them, tweak them, etc -- as long as you promise to commit to the bit and actually make your protagonist face their problems head-on and have feelings about them and actually DO SOME HARD WORK to resolve them instead of conveniently handwaving it all away. (Your protagonist's name is Blue.)
Person vs Person: Blue's neighbor has a longstanding grudge and is trying to get Blue's bakery shut down by any means necessary, including reporting Blue to the health inspectors, who threaten to shut the whole operation down. (If you are writing for adults, then the grudge is bad enough that it CANNOT be solved with the power of friendship or by offering said neighbor free daily croissants. C'mon, don't wimp out. Imagine the Worst coworker you've ever had. Imagine the pettiest HOA lady ever.)
Person vs Society: There is a war in the neighboring kingdom which has impacted the chocolate chip import market. Blue's bakery is struggling financially, and the bank is making ominous noises about Blue's fantasy student loans.
Person vs Self: Blue is having a crisis of faith. They inherited the bakery and they hate running it, but they feel an obligation to their beloved dead relative. They don't know how to balance this against their own dreams, and they feel a ton of guilt about it.
Person vs Supernatural. Blue boasted that they're a better baker than the local hearth goddess. Blue now has a curse that fucks up every loaf, danish, cookie, and sticky-bun they touch. They can't even go into other people's bakeries without jinxing them.
Person vs Fate: Several generations ago, a fortune-teller spoke a prophecy that says the bakery will fail if someone matching Blue's description takes over. Blue doesn't give a shit about that, Blue is determined to make it work, Blue spits in the face of Fate.
Person vs Technology. A new bakery opens just a block away from Blue's, with newfangled magical ovens and staffed entirely by magic robots. Can Blue compete against this? We explore the upsides and downsides between artisanship and mass manufacturing.
Person vs Nature. A really bad winter strangles the town, trapping people in their homes. Blue doggedly wades through waist-deep snow on their daily bread deliveries to the old folks of the town, but they slip on ice and twist their ankle really bad.
Iβm a patron of the arts (I leave nice comments on aO3).
I'm a patron of the arts (I reblog on Tumblr dot com)
Something neuroscience-y that helps with prose: attention is selective. A character will not notice everything in a room. They will notice what matters to their goal, fear, desire, training, wound, or obsession. A jealous character notices hands. a hungry character notices food. A soldier notices exits. A lonely character notices pairs. Description becomes character when attention has a bias.
Do me a favour and reblog this with a show you like that was cancelled after only one season. I don't mean shows that were always meant to be miniseries or shows that work perfectly well as a standalone story, or shows that might still get renewed. I mean shows that are and will forever remain unfinished. The more obscure the better.

aka, the test pilot au by @viharker
At an event celebrating the completion of new TIE fighters, Jyn catches the eye of a particularly handsome pilot. What starts out as something quick and dirty turns into something neither of them could stand to forget.

in terms of "dead dove" tropes in general one of my favourite ways to pervert an otherwise healthy and consensual relationship is to have one of the characters be responsible for something that was objectively and unsympathetically their fault and that they're determined to spend the rest of their lives making up for, but are unwilling (or unable) to confess to their new partner who only knows them as they are now and not as the shameful fuckup they once were, so they end up convincing themselves that they're essentially committing rape by deception - for the entirely selfish reason that is wanting to prove that they can succeed in obtaining and keeping one genuinely good, stable, unblemished thing in their life - by concealing it. but because they both desire comfort and don't feel that they deserve it they continue to do so, going so far as to try to prevent their partner from being exposed to any situation or interaction where they might learn the truth, even as it becomes a case of using them and the relationship to self-harm to satisfy their unresolved guilt that only grows with each passing moment.
and then, just when they've finally started to relax and let themself consider that maybe, just maybe, they do actually deserve to be happy and move on with their life, that's when the other shoe drops and their partner stumbles across the information that fleshes out and gives shape to the unspoken thing that's been hanging over their relationship since day one, to the point that they'd adjusted to living in its shadow, in the least favourable circumstances possible. building your home in someone only to find out that your house is haunted and the spectre has been in the room with you this entire time >>>>>

Stargate SG-1 | Heroes
I am so tired of short-attention-span, trim-the-fat culture. All writing advice these days is for how to write like Chuck Palahniuk. "Cut 'think', cut 'feel', cut 'wonder' - only action, only pushing forward, show and move and move and move." What if I could emulate this style, and still don't want to? What if I want to write like Henry James, with three paragraphs of introspective musings between each dialogue line? The music advice is, "make it shortform, make it Tik-Tok compatible, make it punchy, hit the refrain as soon as possible." What if I want that 10-minute prog rock piece? What if I want that symphony? What if I want it slow and luxurious and lazy? Movies. Series. Poetry. Bodies. Everything is "trimmed trimmed trimmed trimmed, stripped bare, you have three seconds to win me over, make it airport chic." I don't want to win you over, then, I guess. I want the fat left it. I want the pleasure and the indolence and the indulgence. Fuck this art-advice that's always "your art needs Ozempic."
