occasionally, in the spring, i get possessed by this deep and beautiful sense of Tree Awe. today i felt it in a very urban place, riding the bus home after work, climbing a hill and looking down into a residential neighborhood, out over the canopy just beginning to leaf—really just beginning, today, in the rain. green at last! and the smell of damp soil!! i think about what it must be like, that slow waking, the first intake of sugars from this years' chloroplasts. the slow movement of water, the chemical signals pulsing through the mycelial web, enlivened by the thaw, by the rain. what does it mean to be one organism exiting dormancy? what does it mean to be many organisms, intimately intertwined, doing this together? i hope it feels like a deep breath, or maybe like a song. i hope it feels like something human language could never quite capture.
