I was gonna let this slide but I can’t stop thinking about it.

I’m just gonna put this out there, but a fatal flaw in this thinking is that you assume you have to be the best at something to deserve attention or that attention in any way equates to someone being the best.

Tons of people get attention for very stupid or mundane or event inept reasons. Being the best doesn’t mean shit, plenty of people exist I will never know about who will be so insanely skilled at something.

Even me, I’ll admit I have some online attention, but I didn’t get it by being the best.

I am not the best at writing, at comics, at marketing or SEO, I’m not even the best at consistency and follow through. I got lucky making comics that came from my heart, that’s it.

This statement goes for self improvement, developing any kind of skill, and especially with art.

Do not do it for attention. Attention is derived from luck and emotional response, that’s why so much of the internet operates on rage bait, it’s easy engagement.

To be the best for attention is a corrupted motivation you have to work past. It’s not wrong to want attention (though I will tell you it’s not all it’s cracked up to be) but it is wrong to think you get it for being exceptionally skilled.

You better yourself because it is what you want to do. The only thing self improvement will ever guarantee is that you will improve.
