anti-ai people need to understand that the opposition communists have to luddism and reactionary sentiment isn't like, a moral one. the main problem with luddism is that it doesn't actually work. like when we say 'we mustn't try to fight against technology itself, we need to fight against the social system that makes it so that advancement in technology and labour-saving devices lead to layoffs' the reason we're saying it is because, if you try fighting the technology, you're going to lose, and you're still going to lose your job too. when you say 'yeah i understand your criticism but I'm still going to fight against AI' you very clearly did not understand the criticism, because the point is that it isn't even in your own self-interest, because it will not work. the fact that, even if it did work, it would only mean maintaining a privileged strata of 'skilled labour' above other workers is secondary -- because, again, flatly resisting technological advancement has never worked in history.
Except that isn't the history of the luddites.
They (like artists in the ai example) were ultimately at threat of being replaced by machines (that performed the work function of the group better or faster) that spelled out profit gained by the owners of the machines, all at the expense of the humans being replaced. To act like the direct action they believed in was some position where they were smashing wheels because they hated wheels is anti-historical and unfair to their position. You could disagree with them and say that it was a good thing that workers got laid off because of emergent tech. But that doesn't sound as positive or funny.
And to be clear, they "failed" because they were killed. By military force. The thing that underpins and upholds the ruling class and the society they built and the way that the economics of that society were designed from the start.
They stood in fierce opposition to forces that have materially changed all our lives with cost cuts and labor cuts. I implore people to really think about what they wanted and why. Let's learn from their struggle and use it to inform our own.
could you locate the part of the post where i said luddites were all just Dipshits Who Hated Machines? if you can't, it's because it doesn't fucking matter what their reasons were, because they failed. their tactics do not work. That is the point of the post, if you'd reread it and actually try to fucking engage with it instead of just regurgitating some shit you read two years ago about how epic and cool their motivations were (since apparently yankees all get taught they were morons who hated the concept of technology or whatever). We fucking have 'learned from their struggle, two hundred fucking years ago, by developing a political theory that could understand, explain, and overcome their failures. who, exactly, are you trying to convince, when you just reflexively start saying half-remembered shit about smashing wheels and ahistoricity? me, or you?
ultimately, they had a wrong view of the world that produced wrong tactics that failed to achieve positive change, and got them killed. they had this wrong view because of their class position, and their desire not to destroy systems of oppression wholesale, but to maintain their privileged position within them as a strata of skilled labourer, rather than sink to the level of the masses whose miserable conditions would now occupy factories producing fabrics, not just fields producing grain.
And, like, for real, what exactly is the plan here? 'These people tried this, it didn't work, and they all got killed. Every time anyone tried it again, it failed, and they got killed. But if we do the exact same thing again, just maybe…?' - There's a reason people started trying different tactics, and when those tactics worked, when they actually fucking won, and took worker power, it wasn't because they Had The Right Heart, it was because they were actually effective at winning people over and not getting fucking massacred.
Israel is a fake terrorist state.
Ok now do NYT columnists

Not to mention the normalization of 12, 16, and 24 hour shifts in the medical field, as well as there being no legal recourse to refuse being mandated to stay beyond 24 hours when you don't have relief.
Worker abuse, systemic medical abuse, and ableism all in one go.
it also kills thousands of patients a year. sleep deprivation is indistinguishable from being drunk in terms of how badly it affects reaction time, rational thought, decision making, and manual dexterity. people are making just as many life-or-death decisions about patients at the ends of those 24 hour shifts as they are at the beginning. we need a national medical worker's strike and we need it yesterday
I always roll my eyes at posts about what "true punk" is/was and how it was always a left-wing thing because, like, the Sex Pistols were on of the first popular punk rock bands and they were recognized right from the start as posers who had no coherent politics beyond trying to shock people
"Nazi Punks Fuck Off" would have not been a necessary statement if Nazi punks were not a very real thing and a very real part of the punk scene, just sayin'
You literally cannot be a Nazi Punk tho. You're either a Nazi, or you're Punk. Punk has ALWAYS been about kindness and freedom and making things better. Punk is about hope. Punk is about being so angry about injustices that you are going to start a fight over it. Being a Nazi goes against everything that Punk stands for and the two cannot coexist within a single movement.
Punk has ALWAYS been about kindness and freedom and making things better.
No it hasn’t! This is literally exactly the kind of ahistorical take on punk that drives me off the wall, and you’re exactly the kind of person I was vagueing about!
Punk hasn’t always been about freedom, from the start it was being subversive, and what exactly punk was trying to subvert has always been extremely broad and open to interpretetion by different groups!
The Ramones were conservatives. The Sex Pistols had no intended political message beyond being offensive and their frontman supports Trump now. These initial groups were not acting to make a statement about freedom or kindness but to push against the increasing conformity, cleanliness, and smooth production of mainstream rock music. That did not necessarily entail standing up for freedom or left-wing causes. Of the initial “big three” old-school punk bands, The Clash were the only ones that were politically progressive!
Lots of punks in the 80s wore Nazi armbands for the express purpose of being shocking and offensive to mainstream sensibilities because that is what punk was about. And soon enough, the “ironically edgy” Nazi punks gave way to actual goddamned Nazis in punk. Fuck, have you even heard of Skrewdriver? Do you even know that Nazi punks were the reason that “skinhead” became modern shorthand for “neo-Nazi?”
It’s not possible to deny punk to fascists by is by playing “no true Scotsman.” All that does is make it easier to pretend they’re not there, and not a real problem. If you want to tell the Nazi punks to fuck off, you have to first acknowledge that they have a deep history in punk, and you have to face that reality and confront it! You can’t just bury your head in the sand and pretend the problem isn’t real.
watching @wayneradiotv climb rocks for seven hours was worth it for this moment
it's always really interesting to think about all the color fixers when they were just low-grade rats. especially because all of them (that we know of) were backstreets residents (or worse) who just did shit to survive.
like, young kali before she had her inhuman strength or had ever met carmen, struggling to survive but still showing kindness to others. and that terrible night where her own neighbors took advantage of that.
a young vergilius who didn't have his own strength or prowess to rely on yet. maybe taking any job that came his way just to eat. maybe being worried he wouldn't come home.
a low-grade iori, maybe just caring for her son, having to kill people who may well have also been mothers and fathers to her own children.
grade 9 argalia and angelica, with no background to rely on except each other, wondering where they'd get their next meal.
and roland and xiao and yujin and olivier and all the other non-colors who certainly went through the same shit.
like, something that still sticks with me through early ruina and now limbus company is how incredibly desperate things are at the bottom. canto v showing how ishmael and her crew would be willing to do ANYTHING, and having tight bonds with one another (much like we see in low-grade offices like streeglight office in ruina, with mars and lulu for example) DESPITE the fact that, at every turn, every project moon game will tell you "dont get attached" "dont get attached" "dont get attached." all these untouchable, above-it-all fixers are still human and still went through all of that. thinking about how the stone-cold vergilius may have cried over his comrades, how the unbeatable kali probably lost many fights, how the intangible argalia and angelica may have cannibalized other outskirts residents just to live another day.
it adds another layer to them yknow. how much of that humanity do they still have? how much did they give up to get to the top?
@amystarrstuff I made a whole forged in the dark tabletop system about struggling as a low grade fixer to reach the top; if that interests you dm me. :)

There's no one's wisdom that's less valuable than this
What source of passive income allows him to just print money like this?
An ‘unlimited’ annual pass with free parking is $1600/year (up from $1400 when he completed his record 2012-2020). And yeah, that’s over $116 a month and not how I’d spend my money but it’s not obscene.
Plus, he’s an older dude with free time every day. DL is a safe venue to walk around and kill time if all you have is time to kill, and from the article it seems he’s built quite the social network of Disney regulars & cast members. So good for him.
The Disney corporation hates people like him, btw.
Disney considers AP holders parasites, clogging the parks, taking up space that could be better utilized by Big Spending out-of-town visitors. Which is why the price for an AP has gone up so dramatically ALONG WITH a zillion new restrictions like blackout days + reservation requirements.
Up until 2013 or so it was common for local families to buy their kids Annual Passes then drop them off at the park every day during summer as cheap childcare. Seriously, $100/month is a bargain.
thats just the admission and parking though, the park tends to be pretty strict on how much food and drink you can bring in and none of the options inside are cheap, even with the like 10% discount before tax and tips the annual pass holder gets.
You’re absolutely right!
But AP holders usually don’t buy food & drink inside the parks... unless you’re DisneyFoodBlog or Jenny Nicholson. Another reason Disney hates on passholders.
Most AP holders hit one of the kazillion affordable restaurants outside the park on their way in or out, then carry a water bottle once inside to stay hydrated. And most visits aren’t the all-day-long thing out of towners do; AP folk will kill an hour or two, ride Indiana Jones or the Matterhorn then leave.
The guy in the article appears to have visited once a day just to walk a lap or two for exercise. He wasn’t staying all day, dealing with hotel room reservations, rental car, airline tickets, souvenirs, or any of the expenses a tourist would have.
The real insanity is how the US is so lacking in safe public third places that for some people, an annual pass to Disney is their best shot at having a walkable outdoor space and some semblance of community.
please god above can someone explain to me why we're still working on self driving cars when trains exist
"we're training them to interpret road signs!" Train goes same place every day. No road signs.
"when forced to choose between old lady and child, which is more ethical for the car to hit?" Fence around train track. Nobody on the road.
"people with disabilities preventing them from driving themselves can be independent" Yes but also. Train.
"reduces the dangers of fatigue with long distance trucking" Train.
"the technology is not yet price effective for the average driver" Train.
Seriously come on choo choo bitches let's goooooooooo
The thing that galls me above all else is that in the U.S. we had a train based public transport system up until the 1950s when the Ford Motor Company lobbied local governments for buses. The tracks were ripped up, or neglected and abandoned and now many places are spending huge amounts of money to put them back. In the Midwest where I live you could go from downtown to the outermost suburbs 100 years ago on the street car and the travel times were faster than what we have now given traffic, etc. It's fucking disgusting and it's capitalism at its worst.

White people are only just now coming to grips with the idea that they have privilege and that talking about racism isn't going to make them feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I highly doubt they're ready to accept that the people that them and their ancestors have traumatized for centuries might harbor genuine hatred towards them. Like, sorry dude, but you're not always going to receive love and hugs and uwus for undoing something you're responsible for ;(
