Knowing that Christopher Nolan has no idea of women’s inner lives AND that he knows his own happiness is completely reliant on his wife, who is also his boss, without whom he would be creatively and emotionally adrift, suggest that his marriage is this intensely spiritual, almost theological type of femdom. Not unlike the guy who defrauded Harvard with a fake “Jesus’ wife” papyrus less as a financial fraud than as an extension of his belief that his own wife, with whom he was in a femdom relationship, was the reincarnation of Mary Magdalene. But Nolan is, I guess, a more pagan iteration, in which Emma Thomas is like a puzzling oracle to whom her husband must keep making a variety of sacrifices to please. A sort of cargo cult femdom. I’m very happy for them both, to be clear.

baffled at the vein of criticism that A Little Life is pro-suicide, or is arguing that "some people are so broken that suicide is their best choice" (specific phrasing that comes up surprisingly often in people's protests about the book). this is really bizarre to me, and counter to anything i would say actually happens in the book. I feel like it must be coming from some deep hostility or fear around seeing suicidality represented at all, and especially represented as something that is understandable, that can be part of a rich and complex life, that is as emotionally deep and dignified as other experiences, etc. i did think the book posed a meaningful critique of psychiatry: people keep trying to force jude to "get better" in various ways, and the book draws you along with jude's experience so closely that the reader deeply feels his antipathy against the coercion in those methods (ultimatums, institutionalization, force-feeding), and his dull resignation to the repetition of the same traumatic dynamics of his childhood. jude insists on maintaining his autonomy in the face of this by lying extensively to his loved ones, and to his therapist, once he's forced and cajoled into therapy. people don't quite articulate this but i assume that what they are really objecting to is the book's refusal to portray psychiatry as salvific in the correct terms
"...and I wept, and I prayed to God to send vengeance upon them all!" "There's no need to trouble God, George. I'll take it in hand."

daniel mendelsohn's translation commentary on the odyssey (book 1)
[image text: Yet you now find Odysseus odious?: This is the first instance of a pun on the hero's name, of which there will be several as the epic proceeds. We are told in Book 19 that Odysseus's name, which is derived from the verb odyssesthai, "to cause/suffer pain or trouble," was given to him by his maternal grandfather, Autólykos, a famous trickster and theif who had caused people a great deal of trouble indeed. What Athena says in Greek here is tí nú tóson odyssao, Zeû?: "Why now do you odysseus him so much, Zeus?" Here and elsewhere, I have tried to convey the wordplay by using "odium" for the feeling Odysseus both experiences and provokes.]

if there was any justice at all in the world “every helen has her troy” would be an idiom (“every beautiful woman leaves a disaster in her wake”) and misogynistic renaissance authors would use it to describe hot women they didn’t like but, of course, inadvertently making her sound insanely awesome in the process. and then in modern times instead of talking about things being their hill to die on women could say “this is my troy to burn” and people on tumblr would be kind of horny about the whole thing and it would get incorporated into the whole “can yuo put that out on me” genre of posts. anyway just a glimpse into my beautiful mind tonight
