emily brontë definitely sees heathcliff as a racial other and positions him as such and crucially does not apply a civilising narrative to his characterisation. the discomfort comes from this rejection of a politics of appeal and heathcliff being both the ‘villain’ AND the love interest, and this tension being very specifically racialised. compare this to the relationship between catherine and ‘gentleman’ edgar linton, which lacks this sort of conflict (we’re meant to understand they’re ‘right’ for each other) but is also void of any real import (it’s a marriage of convenience).
it’s important that catherine’s romantic interest in heathcliff does not redeem or change his otherness; in fact, it heightens it. he is not ‘bettered’ by her love for him, and neither is she, at least not in the eyes of polite society. heathcliff remains ‘abject’ and squarely beyond the fold of the early victorian household, despite his supposed upward mobility. this sort of mutually assured destruction, or abjection, is a hallmark of the gothic novel (at least in the western canon).
notice, however, that heathcliff is not disqualified as a love interest simply because he isn’t white. he is subject to disapproval, scorn, violence and exclusion precisely because he is a contender for catherine’s affections, and therefore a threat to the family unit (though, again, we’re not meant to understand love / romance as a straightforwardly good thing in this story, or even necessarily desirable). to me, this is the central tension (and perhaps contradiction) of the novel. heathcliff is neither ‘redeemed’ nor erased from the text as a form of course correction, and this ambivalence - his persistent presence, actually - makes readers deeply uncomfortable.
