Hi pals! I'm Julian, a picture book illustrator who is a regular trans guy and definitely not a frog. I'm a traditional artist working in gouache, so everything I paint is done on paper.

This is primarily an art blog but I can't promise absolutely no content from old old video games. I make books & sell my work at in-person markets and online. If you're in the non-city bit of New York we might run into each other sometime!

it's crazy 2 me that every time i'm like "the existence of bugs is vital to the very fabric of reality as we know it. if we do not prioritize protect & value bugs, if we lose bugs, the entire world goes with them"

people in the comments will be like "okay but we could at least get rid of ticks and mosquitos because those spread disease."

we actually CANNOT get rid of ticks and mosquitos. not only do we plain lack the technology to lead a pointed extermination effort against them specifically without taking a score of other species down with them, but if we developed that technology and did eradicate mosquitos and ticks, it would be the catalyst of utter ecological collapse the likes of which i think people are not quite comprehending.

the problem is not the existence of bugs. the problem is that our current global systems ensure that specific Peoples in specific places are disproportionately impacted by zoonoses (illness spread between animals and humans).

those same populations also disproportionately lack access to preventative tools & PPE (down to things many of us take for granted so simply as effective bug spray), and crucially access to medical treatment.

the goal should not be an eradicating effort against bugs which would quite literally collapse entire ecosystems, but equitable access to healthcare, investment in medical research to improve preventative and acute treatment for zoonoses, and the destruction of systems which are currently rapidly increasing the threat of zoonoses worldwide (climate change!)

i am not defending the existence of bugs because i think they're cute and because i don't care about the devastating suffering zoonoses cause millions and millions of people.

the point is that the eradication of these species would likewise cause devastation and suffering, but the tools, the money, the minds, the research, the science ALL exist to actually change the world for the better through global public health systems, but it's all being strangulated by imperial fucking systems which have been and continue to destroy everything!

prosecution established affiliation by way of defendants having fucking anarchist zines, the kind of shit you see in a punk house. this is what they want and are willing to pursue for all of us who aren't willing to lay down and die, imprisonment and torture and the absolute stripping of our dignity (the govt gleefully included their deadnames in a press release yesterday; Morris' public defender has consistently deadnamed and misgendered her despite her legal name change)

there is no one who will protect us except us, and if our sisters are lost to us and forgotten as soon as they are grabbed by the prison system (ie if the system is allowed to work as intended) then we are failing, and we are woefully unprepared for a world where they start taking more of us

Saturday, June 20th from 2–4 I'm doing a workshop angled at kids with fellow PB author Emily Sun Li about how to make your own picture book, at Protagonist Books in Dryden!

Sunday, June 21st from 11–3, I'll be at the Queer Pride Craft Fair at the Radio Social in Rochester with a bunch of other SUPER cool queer artists! One of my fave markets of the year. It's so well-curated and so fun.

July 24th–26th I'll be at Syracuse Arts & Crafts in downtown Syracuse!

Friday, August 14th from noon to 7:30 I will (I'm pretty sure; acceptances haven't gone out yet but I got in the last few years) be at the Ithaca Artists' Market at the farmer's market!

And then I'll be at Clothesline in Rochester at the end of August, but that's pretty far out! It's gonna be a busy market season, especially since I'm also doing sketches for three picture books and secret edits on a fourth thing, but I'm so excited to see everybody!!
