Iâm on a dimension hopping kick rn so imagine an AU where Bruce, as a last ditch effort to save his son from a dying planet, sends 10-year-old Dick to a different universe. Heâs done extensive research. He knew something was brewing with Darkseid, he knew he might need to do something drastic, so he found the best possible world to send his son.
In this alternate universe, Dick fell with the rest of the Flying Graysons. Bruce never had the chance to adopt him, it never even crossed his mind, because it was never even a possibility.
Having a child is something he never knew he was missing. Heâs still friendly with Superman and Wonder Woman and heâs in the Justice League, but heâs more closed off. He doesnât open up as much as he would have if he had a brightly colored little Robin at his side.
So when this terrified and frantic child appears in his cave one night after patrol, he doesnât really know what to do.
âI have to go back!â Dick shouts at him, and heâs breathing heavily, heâs panicking. âI have to go back, I have to help him!â
âAlright, alright,â Bruce tries to calm him down. âWhere did you come from?â
Bruce keeps trying to grab hold of him to keep him still and calm him down, but Dick keeps squirming away.
âI need to go home!â he cries. âStop! Stop, I need to go home! Youâre not my Bruce!â
Bruce freezes, because heâs still in his batsuit. He still has the cowl on. Thereâs no way this child should know who he is.
It takes a while, but he eventually figures out whatâs going on. Once Dick calms down. Once Dick explains that his Bruce sent him away. That his Bruce came back from a mission with the JL, and he was hurt, he was hurt so so badly, and the world around them was crumbling. He wouldnât let Dick help him. He grabbed a bag and gave it to Dick and sent him away.
This Bruce has no idea what to do. He has a distraught, panicking child in his cave. He canât send him back to the world he just came from. What is he supposed to do with him?
He brings Dick upstairs to the manor and gives him a room. Well, Dick picks the room. He says itâs his. Bruce doesnât argue.
Later that night, as he broods in the cave, he receives a transmission from the Bruce who sent Dick here. Itâs a video explaining why he picked this universe, why he picked this Bruce. He pleads for him to take care of Dick. To keep him safe. He explains whatâs going on in his universe, how itâs not going to survive much longer.
âYouâll love him, I promise you will,â this other Bruce tells him. âHeâs the best kid from any universe. He deserves the best. He deserves to live. I know youâll do right by him.â
And, well, shit. Now heâs gonna have to keep the kid. He just needs to figure out how to go about it from a legal standpoint. He canât just say the kid appeared in his basement.
Maybe heâll say Dick is the product of some fling from a decade ago. Thatâs plausible. That could work.
Heâll have to figure out the details with Dick. Heâs sure the kid will have several opinions.
hey so. donât do this.
âcoming from a place of respectâ there is nothing respectful about a comment like this. this is exactly why I say witch hunt, speculations and accusations harm the writing community as much as ai does, if not more.
I am not saying âyouâre an asshole if you think a fic is aiâ. I have come across fics that I believe were ai-generated. but instead of asking (accusing) the authors, I make my own decisions whether Iâll continue reading for the benefit of the doubt or quietly exit the fics and look for something else to read.
because with every accusation like this, thereâs always a chance of a genuine, innocent writer getting wrongly accused.
last but not least, fanfic writers do NOT owe you anything. they write for themselves and their own enjoyment. their ao3 accounts are their houses and they were kind enough to let you in their houses. for free. (you get to read things for free.) you donât go into other peopleâs houses and tell them âactually I think the way you decorate your room is sus. did you actually do it yourself or did you ask a robot to do it for you?â. THEY đđť DONâT đđť OWE đđť YOU đđť ANYTHING. and I say this as someone who is not a fan of ai fics. if you donât like what youâre seeing, quietly leave.
*the following is not about the fic in this specific post. in general, I still strongly believe people who let ai write for them should tag their works as ai accordingly. but if we want more people to be honest about it, weâll have to stop shaming and harassing people who actually tag their ai-generated fics accordingly. harassment is never justified. not to mention, it will only make âai writersâ refrain from tagging their ai-generated works as such. and then thereâs no way for anyone to know for absolute certainty if itâs ai. therefore the raise of witch hunt.
I've seen a bunch of "fandom etiquette" posts on my dash today and I'm going to say something that is maybe going to be unpopular but;
The absolutely pervasive mentality that unwanted criticism or critique shouldn't be given and should be ignored is why fans of color don't stay in fan spaces.
And I am not going to mince words here:
A lot of you are racist. A lot of your fan works are racist.
That might have been difficult to hear. And if it was, you should probably reflect on why that was.
"Fandom etiquette" has created a space where fans of color either bite our tongues and eventually leave or say something, get dogged on, and then eventually leave.
So much of "fandom etiquette" seems to be about insulating creatives from Feeling Bad and hostility to any kind of negative feedback is a pretty big contributor to why bigotry festers in these spaces.
If anyone sees anything racist from me, let me know!!! I'll try my best not to post or reblog anything like that, but I can be pretty bad at knowing what's too sensitive to say sometimes. and if anyone is interested in talking through/debating their opinions on this with me, my asks are wide open. Racism is an important issue I am sadly not well-read in, and I would love to note people's opinions.
Loved your analysis on the batboys. Wanted to know about damian a little more: do you think he'd have trouble in relationships when he's grown due to a "might as well" mentality? If someone is growing apart he's like "I guess this isn't working out" instead of trying to fix it? Or because he hasn't got a "replacement"/ someone who fills the role of romantic partner the same way he does with a brother/dad/guardian he'd be more proactive about working on a relationship?
to be perfectly honest i don't think romantic relationships would ever be relevant. i've always been partial to aro damian because i like damian's story being centred around him growing from his time in the league and learning how to be his full human self without the influence/legacy he was forced to carry from birth, and i think in some ways adding in a romantic interest can make it feel like that journey is less damian learning to be self sufficient and satisfied with who he is and more about him conforming to whatever the romantic interest desires/needing somebody elses affection to be happy, which just doesn't personally appeal to me, and i think that is even more in line with batcom!damian because of how much messier his life is. with everything he is and everything he comes to be i think that romance just. isn't something he ever considers/chases in any way. he wouldn't ever think about romance.
i think it could effect friendships, though, but not necessarily in a way that would be harmful to damian. like i said he is very analytical and good at worming his way through interactions, so if he wants something out of a friendship with somebody, i don't think he'd ever really find issues keeping that friendship strong; however if the friendship wasn't a specific interest of damian it would probably be effected by the mindset of 'well whatever happens happens.' he probably is considered to be quite callous/off-putting to people that attempt to get to know him later on in life just because damian wouldn't have much need to make these people like him; but then again i think in some ways that could end up being quite a good defence against fake friends. the only people who get past damian's apathy and continue to be a part of his life are the friends that genuinely want to be around him and don't mind those colder parts of him--anybody else would lose interest because damian doesn't care enough about pointless social conventions to play the self-soothing games that most people play.

OKAY so I just read the batcom Jason Dick lore post and itâs literally so fascinating. I feel like that idea of âit doesnât really matter anymore if this relationship is healthy, it just simply existsâ kind of mindset makes so much sense for Jason, and I really love that Dick was able to emotionally mature enough into being there for his family.
I was wondering how Damien and Tim fit into all of this? I know you got into it a little bit, but it feels like Damien and Tim almost have Bruce as theirâŚ.grandfather? Type beat? Because they were both heavily raised by a Dick and Jason who were trying to be better parents than they got. But like theyâre also brothers? And they do kinda see Bruce as their father?
Anyway, I was just wondering if you could explain more about the Tim Damien dynamic, both with each other and with Bruce and Dick and Jason
I love the batcom series so much and I want to eat the lore as sustenance so thank you for the food
GOD it took me like, two fucking months to answer this and im SO sorry for the delay i promise when things settle down for me schedule wise i WILL eventually get better at keeping on top of answering asks--this one i just wanted to pay proper special attention to because it's talking about batcom dynamics which is. always a sure-fire way to get me to never shut the fuck up. anyway for anybody who doesn't know what this person is talking about i did a massive deep-dive on batcom!jason and batcom!dick's relationships with each other and bruce here, which you can go read if you're curious.
ok for this ask specifically let me make a cup of tea so i can settle down try to articulate my thoughts properly.Â
what do you think about the headcanon that Tim never trusted Dick after Tim left to find Bruce and Dick didn't believe him?
I mean, I'd say this headcanon is objectively incorrect.
This occurs during Blackest Night, which is an event that happens right after Final Crisis (when Bruce "dies"). Damian is still processing Bruce's death. There's still adjustment to the mantle shift. This is the point where tensions would be highest.
And still, despite the fact that there are a few lingering tensions throughout this event, it doesn't compromise how Dick and Tim feel about each other at all. When the resurrected corpses of their parents attack them, what do the rings detect while they're talking to each other?
Will, compassion, love, and hope. That's what they feel for each other. Dick is compassionate in that he wants to comfort and protect Tim, and one of the avenues he sees to do that is to protect Tim from the false hope and ensuing crushing despair of failure to save his parents. (Cough cough, parallels). Tim is loving and hopeful in that he loves his parents, loves Dick for that matter, and is driven by the hope that he can save both of their parents now that they're "back".
That's all this is, really. Not just the event comic, but the broader situation with Bruce, which is repeatedly demonstrated after this as their relationship continues to improve back to baseline. It was not some deliberate betrayal of Tim by Dick to doubt Bruce's survival, nor was it some deliberate betrayal of Dick by Tim to abandon him in Gotham. They both lost someone incredibly important to them in a lifetime of tragedy and reacted. These reactions were imperfect, as reactions tend to be when you're grieving. And then, because they love each other and trust each other, this was amended. Quite rapidly, actually, which is very funny given how hung up about it some people are. Dick and Tim were back to actively being The Brothers within a pretty short period of time. This isn't the first time either have accidentally caused collateral damage because of their crash-outs.
Anyways, I don't blame you for asking anon. This was actually kind of fun to talk about. It's just... not true that Brucequest resulted in some irreparable, or even particularly long-standing, fissure in their relationship.
The Bats displaying various types of autism and other neuro divergencies. Alfred bearing witness to it all over the years, assuming he'd gotten the brunt of it when Bruce was a child, only to realize the rules kept changing and therefore he had to keep adapting.
Bruce
Bruce, of course, has ocd. It was especially prevalent after his parents died, and he so desperately needed a constant in his life. He'd only eat one thing for months. I wanna say the last thing he ate before his parents died, but there's a chance that would be triggering. Maybe. Maybe not. He also hated when his food touched. Soft foods and solid food could not be on the same plate. Mashed potatoes and steak had to be separated or else they'd be contaminated. Grilled asparagus could share the plate with steak as long as there was no contact.
Why is it revolutionary to know a person?
Someone I have worked with for a decade is retiring. He and I have been close- weâve traveled together, shared meals, talked about our families and our hobbies, spent time. We text. We talk. Weâve know each other for ten years.
I went looking for a gift for his retirement, and found a watch that relates to the specific kind of car that he works on as a hobby. I bought it, and then invited people to chip in if they wanted.
My coworkers are acting like this is miraculous?
âHow did you think of that?â I knew he had a hobby and I googled it?
âHow did you know he works on those?â I listen to people when they talk.
âHow do you always buy such good gifts?â I listen when people talk to me. Most people are dying to talk about their interests. You just have to give them an in. If your memory sucks, start a note in your phone and write down what people express interest in. Look at it every so often before you hang out to refresh your memory.
âI never would have thought of that.â I didnât, really. I just spent 20 minutes looking at eBay and Etsy and a few subreddits. Itâs easy if you try.
Honestly, if you want to make connections with people, express interest in their passions. Itâs easy if you practice it.
One time a friend told me that if she wanted to have a chill night she would come to me and ask for tea and a book to read. I didnât like tea at the time, but I always made sure my cupboards had them in case she needed a quiet night. One time I told my boss that I loved oranges, but couldnât peel them because of my nails. For a year he made sure to peel me one at least once a week. Once my friends gave me a made up superlative of âmost likely to have a pen they could borrowâ and ever since Iâve made sure I always carry a pen with me. A long time ago, my high school librarian told me that no one would care what my grade in my sophomore chemistry class was if Iâm bringing them doughnuts and asking them about their day.
Sometimes friendship is about carrying pens and peeling oranges. But the point is, surrounding yourself with people who you want to do the little things for. The point of it all is bringing in the doughnuts because youâve found the people who deserve the doughnuts.
How sweet it is to be with people you enjoy taking care of

I promised myself agessss ago to comb through all the Duke-centric fics ever but that turned out to be too much for my tiny brain so instead!!! I'm going to highlight a few Duke-centric fics that I personally adore. I tried find people's tumblr but if I got any wrong feel free to let me know!! And please give these talented writers all the love!!!
Different Wavelengths by @inamindfarfaraway
This was the impetus for this post because it JUST finished!!! I recced this before but it explores Duke and mental health in such an amazing way. You won't be dry-eyed by the time you get to the end, and you will be all the better for it â¤ď¸â¤ď¸â¤ď¸. Read Chapter 6 for some REALLY GOOD Bruce-Dukisms â¤ď¸â¤ď¸â¤ď¸â¤ď¸
The Sun At Midnight by @stickdoodlefriend
A short & wonderful fic set during Batman & The Outsiders, exploring the moment when Duke gets his shadow powers. The writing is incredible in this one, and there are so many lovely canon references!!! Bonus points for featuring Cassie Cain!!!!
Someone To Be Proud Of by @inkwell1013
Trans Duke comes out to Elaine!!! This fic made me cry it's so incredibly sweet đđđ. They really are the mother-son duo of all time!!! The last line hits hard like this only takes a few minutes to read but I promise it is SO worth it!!!
Shivering In The Cold (You Look Like Youâve Just Seen A Ghost) by @inkwell1013
MY FAV Duke sees ghosts fic because it features Duke seeing the ghost of TROY. Which is the best fic premise in the worldddd I love this one so much!!! I'm going to cry thinking about it please read!!
strangely akin by @takataapui
If anyone remembers that post that insinuated Duke was afraid of smoking (??), this is the antidote for you!!! A lovely Jason & Duke fic set in the aftermath of Duke failing to save someone. It's quiet, moving, and has beautiful references to canon. The best thing that will ever come out of those terrible Duke fanon posts!!!
There's Nothing Left For You by @himejoshiangels
From the patron saint of Duke nation comes an absolutely wonderful fic chronicling Duke's experiences with family. Both sections (with the Thomas family and with WAR) are sooo amazing it makes me tear up just thinking about it đđ A masterclass in every way, this is Duke to his core it's so so so good everyone READ!!!!!
"A Light at The End" by @cer-rata
A wonderful DukeBao fic that explores Duke & Bao's relationship with all its ups and downs. The character interactions are pitch perfect and Duke is soooo full of personality here, I just love him so much!!!!! Duke and Bao are the most precious duo ever!!
Don't hold your breath, I don't think we've got much time left by @chemical-processes
Not technically Duke-centric but it's an All-Star Batman fic featuring Bruce, Duke, and Harvey after Duke gets injured in. Just fantastic fantastic stuff, Bruce-Duke-Harvey is forever an underrated beautiful trio and this fic proves that!!!!!
and there was absolutely no other way this could have gone by sydandgotham05
There is no way to describe this fic that will do it justice. A searing character study that examines Duke's experiences being a Black hero in the Batfam, it is an absolute masterpiece of a fic and one that really should be required reading!!!
Also see @himejoshiangels' list for even more Duke-centric recs!!! There are fics I love on there that I didn't put here for repetition's sake, so go check them out!!!!!!
i like fanworks where dick is closer with the batsiblings than he is in canon but like generally speaking he's really busy and self-isolating and they have to break into his apartment or call him for backup to see him. like in post-crisis canon. even timmy who is his little purse dog doesn't spend half as much time with dick as you'd expect. the titans barely see him unless they're backing each other up or are on a team together at the moment which is half of why they keep manically reforming the team every three years (so they can actually hang out). post-crisis dick is not the person keeping the bats together (that's tim) or scheduling family hangouts (that's not really any of them on any kind of regular basis) he's spending 18 hours a day minimum working and nightwinging and somehow squeezing even more time out of the day to fix his neighbor's water heater and do six other good deeds and then he's getting shot again
I think I can confidently speak for all of us when I say we were all expecting a cat.
I was, but I was very much not disappointed.
honestly about half way i went from "hmm cat bed" to "nahh cat would fuck it up" but still wasnt ready
Op, your post about food is a delight? Can you please share more? As someone who suffers from an ed, I found that refreshing and kinda comforting. Thank you!!
5 More Moments with Dick, Tim, and Food (plus bonus panels with Dick and Tim eating with friends!)
Thank you, kind person, this ask was a great excuse to go looking for EVEN MORE panels with food!! I find them comforting too. Lots of love to you and I hope you enjoy these panels as much as I do!! â¤
Please enjoy the continuing adventures of Dick and Tim bonding over food, i.e. Dick finding food for Tim.
1. Dick keeps his fridge stocked for Tim in Secret Origins 80-Page Giant
Back when Dick and Tim were Batman and Robin, and Dick was living alone in the Manor, Dick started keeping the fridge stocked for Tim. Here, it looks like Dick might have food and drinks for Tim in his fridge in BlĂźdhaven, too.
I'm not sure what Tim's reaching for but there's a good chance it's Zesti Cola, a soft drink that both Dick and Tim like.
(Also, check out the probable birthday cake! Dick's currently kinda dating Bridget Clancy, so most likely it's from her or for her. On the other hand, in this comic Dick says Tim's "almost fifteen"...)
2. Popcorn in Secret Origins 80-Page Giant
Later in the same comic, they're going to watch some trashy TV together, so naturally, that means it's time for popcorn!
3. Pizza in Birds of Prey 19
Okay, this may actually be my favorite. It's shortly after the end of No Man's Land, and everyone in Gotham is rebuilding. Babs is rewiring her whole computer system to make it more powerful, so Tim has come over to help out. Then Dick shows up at the front door...
Babs: "It's Dick! Ahhh.... and he brought flowers." Tim: "And pizza! You knew I was here, Dick?" Dick: "Alfred said you were over here helping Babs."
Okay, so what is AWESOME about this is that a) Tim understands immediately that the pizza is for him, and b) he is right!
In other news, Dick and Clancy have recently broken up, and Dick and Babs aren't technically dating yet, though you'd be forgiven for assuming they are. They're certainly getting very close.
Meanwhile, Alfred is at Brentwood, Tim's strict all-boys' boarding school (Alfred had a fight with Bruce and decamped for a while), but - awkward! - Babs still doesn't know Tim's secret identity, which is why Dick and Tim can't tell her where Alfred is.
4. Pizza in Gotham Knights 33
Years ago, Bane broke Bruce's back, but now he's reemerged and Bruce is determined to rehabilitate him - though Dick and Tim are skeptical. When Bruce insists on leaving with Bane on a mission to destroy a Lazarus Pit in Nicosia, Dick and Tim camp out in the Cave fretting about his safety...until Tim falls asleep.
As you can see, they've gotten pizza again.
(The "troubles with Luthor and Cain" is a recent plotline: President Luthor hired David Cain to kill Bruce's girlfriend Vesper Fairchild, framing him for murder. Tim thinks Bruce's guilt over Vesper's death is making him reckless.)
5. Dick brings donuts to the Cave in Gotham Knights 46
While Tim and Cass are looking at old photos of the Spook, Dick shows up with donuts! Tim is ecstatic.
(That's right - Cass is here now! Technically, she's been around for a while - Bruce met Cass during No Manâs Land, and ever since, he and Babs have been training the new Batgirl. But Cass still doesn't know Dick and Tim that well, so this is a rare cute moment with the three of them.)
This issue as a whole has some nice Dick and Tim moments, like when they spend thirty-three hours on stake-out and make a bet about what will happen. They're watching the Spook, who's recently out on parole: Tim thinks the Spook's reformation might be genuine, while Dick's sure it's a fake-out.
(This isn't the first bet Dick and Tim have made! Back in Prodigal, Tim bet that Azrael was genuinely reformed, and Dick bet that he wasn't. Tim won that bet, but this time, Dick wins - though the Spook has given up violent crime, he's still stealing money.)
Bonus: Dick eating with friends (and sorta girlfriend) in Titans Secret Files 2!
A bit after the end of No Man's Land, the Titans come to BlĂźdhaven for the first time, and they surprise Dick by bringing pizza to his apartment!
...Though maybe they should've called first. XD
Chronologically, this comic comes out a few months after #3, but since Dick seems to still be kinda dating Bridget Clancy here, logically it must take place shortly before that.
(Dick breaks up with Clancy in Nightwing 43, the issue right before the "flowers-and-pizza" Birds of Prey comic.)
Though things are a little awkward as everybody gets to know each other, they quickly all have fun hanging out - though Dick does get annoyed with Roy, who makes a point of telling his sorta girlfriend all kinds of embarrassing stories!
Friends: can't live with 'em, can't live without 'em.
Bonus: Tim eating with friends in Young Justice 7!
Check it out: it's another pizza party!
This storyline happens even earlier, during No Man's Land (between #2 and Titans Secret Files 2). The newly-formed Young Justice team hangs out, plays truth-or-dare, and talks about why they became vigilantes.
(Meanwhile, the Young Justice parent-teacher conference is held, with Wonder Girl and Arrowette's mothers, Superboy and Impulse's guardians, and -- Robin's big brother. Tim's dad doesn't know he's Robin, and Bruce is AWOL in No Man's Land, so Dick shows up for him instead. <3)
Rambling analysis...
This is kind of a side-note, but something I really like about these panels is the subtle way that the "family" Dick + Tim panels often feel different from the "friendship" panels.
Just like with real brothers who live fairly close to each other, Dick and Tim's bonding-over-food scenes tend to be pretty casual - hanging out is a regular thing, not a big-deal Event. Finding food for his visiting little brother is something that Dick does so routinely that he's already got stuff in his fridge!
Whereas when Dick and Tim are getting together with their close friends who live pretty far away, it's more of a celebratory special occasion. That's not always true - they both go through periods when they spend more time with friends than with family - but it's definitely true in the time these panels are from, when Dick and Tim are both struggling to decide how much they want to open up to their teammates.
Luckily for them, those teammates are happy to ply them with pizza until they figure it out.
Actually bouncing off that last reblog, I think it is absolutely important to understand not only that Jack Drake is new money, but that he is a very specific type of new money parent, (which I happen to think is one that is declining in general existence at least in part to the declining affordability of a lot of these things, although these mentalities are still present, just to a somewhat lesser degree).
Which is parents that are very wealthy but very anti- old money scion behavior of just getting whatever you want. (The beef between old and new money being something that can be absolutely enormous and informs Jack's hatred of Bruce.)
These type of parents would have enough money to get their kids basically anything, but would go "no, I'm not getting you a car, you have to work and earn money and pay for it yourself". With the idea being to teach the kids that they actually need to work for everything they receive, and to be fiscally responsible. Nothing is handed to you on a silver platter.
And then, for instance, Bruce gets Tim a car.
Which not only gives the impression of kind of "buying" his son, but also explicitly undermines his parenting style.
Like, you really really cannot fully understand the absolute massive beef Jack has with Bruce without the knowledge that it involves fear that Tim will learn to start acting like an old money scion.
What makes it kind of extra delicious is that Tim actually does work his ass off. Bruce gives him a car, yes, but that's after all of Tim's hard work and training, after relying on Bruce and Alfred for rides as Robin, after working his ass off as Robin. Tim didn't work to earn the money to buy a car, but he absolutely put in the work to earn it - Jack just didn't see any of it.
It's even better then when Jack sells Tim's car to pay off his debt, because he took something someone else had worked for to fix his mistakes. In his head, he was paying off his debt AND getting rid of something Bruce had "just" bought for Tim on a whim, but from Tim's perspective Jack took something Tim earned and cared about to cover his own ass (that Bruce had to then fix by buying the Redbird and holding it for Tim).
And I get that this isn't technically Jack's fault because he didn't know about Tim being Robin (at the time), but a good chunk of Jack and Tim's problems could have been solved by sitting down and having a conversation about it, or Jack having a conversation with Bruce or with Bruce and Tim, but I genuinely think Jack would rather eat glass than do any of those.
Yep! @chiyana You're right!
100% the thing about this whole gripe is that what Jack sees isn't even true - Tim worked his ass off in regard to everything to do with Bruce, but it's all tied up with Robin stuff, so he doesn't know.
And then when he does find out, he forces him to quit, which yes, is an additional irony even if it sounds reasonable to a lot of people on the face of it, because he's been glorifying the story of a literal child soldier in their family Tim's entire life. (Not to mention that his finding out is tied up in a gross invasion of privacy and his reaction involving threatening Bruce with a gun are both unreasonable stances, I have a full breakdown of Robin: Unmasked as a Jack hate post on my blog. This post isn't about that.)
Which is why the closest he comes to forming an actual, genuine relationship with Tim is in the short time period he has between Tim going back to Robin / him accepting that and his death. Which is where the argument about whether he could have been decent from that point forward comes into play. Because he died, so we don't know.
Basically I think from the perspective of a reader in regard to canon Jack, having a positive or negative opinion of him at the end of the day is very tied up in if you think, had he lived, if he'd have been able to maintain his acceptance long-term now that he knew Tim was fully being raised with this kind of work ethic from both ends, or if he could just not have helped himself but fall back to being bitchy about Tim's relationship with Bruce to the point of his own relationship degrading once again. (Well besides people that might have a positive opinion of him because they agree with a parent being able to treat their child like property, which is a stance I'm fully not going to engage in.)
I have a hard time really believing that Jack would have improved all that much if he had lived, tbh. A lot of what we see from Jack Drake is that he prioritizes himself and what he wants first, and he sees Tim as his property and an extension of himself before he sees Tim as an independent human being - even while loving Tim. Jack waffles a lot and sometimes does a complete about-face in his opinions/behaviors as different writers try to figure out what to do with him, but at his core, he is (or at least very much wants to be) the traditional conservative 'head of the household' patriarch: he wants a nice house in a nice neighborhood, he wants an attractive and doting wife, an obedient son who respects and looks up to him, and he wants to be respected by his peers and seen as a 'real man'.
And from what we see, he has those things for the most part, but there are a few glaring asterisks: his debt problems, the mishandling and loss of Drake Industries, the way Dana challenges him on some things, the way he's older and not in his prime, but all of that can be smoothed over.
Except then there's Tim.
#jack out here having the messiest nastiest divorce slash custody battle with Bruce#a man he has never been married to#nor been in the same room with for a consecutive hour#meanwhile the one he should really be worroed about is Dick#Jack and Bruce arguing about who Tim loves and respects more#meanwhile Tim is staring at Dick with stars in his eyes kicking his heels
Partly just bringing this out of the tags. Although also important to note that said argument about who Tim loves in respects more isn't either of them thinking it's themselves, but thinking it is the guy they are arguing with, while thinking that said guy doesn't deserve it. Bruce looses some rank in the Bruce Wayne Haters Club (of which he's normally high-level) purely from Jack annoying him too much. Meanwhile, Dick is absolutely 100% the person Tim loves and respects the most.
#Tim being the President and Founding Member of the Gotham Dick Grayson Fanclub #Bruce thought it could be him for a while but Tim beat him by several minutes and graciously allows Bruce to be Vice-President
#I think an important thing to note about Jack from a meta perspective #is that he was originally intended to be killed not long after Janet #but was kept around because it would be âmore interestingâ #so he 100% only ever lived for the Drama#and in the end he died as he lived in that way #just wanted to add that I found the actual reblog and the tags and it's 100% valid to love that whole situation BECAUSE it's messy #it's basically another post I reblogged where it's like âthat character is problematicâ âyeah they're SUPPOSED to beâ that's Jack (via @katanahime)
#DC killed Janet before she could divorce Jack so Bruce gets the post divorce child custody battle mess instead #Jack does not know how to parent as a verb #he never needed to when Janet was alive and after her death he does not learn (via @mizminola)
and also some tags on the original post bc they made me lol:
#One of my fav Jack drake moments (I think this in batgirl?) #Tim says they should get a dishwasher #Jack says that they have a dishwasher and his name is Tim (via @aliteralchicken)
Jack's biggest issue when Janet died was that he suddenly became a single parent, and he didn't realise the difference between being the 'fun' parent who was the one who primarily brought home income and spent 3 hours with his kid on a Saturday afternoon, with being the hands on parent responsible for actively caring for the kid. Because up until that moment Janet had handled the active parenting as had Tim's boarding school.
Which is why Jack was always bringing up the topic of boarding school: from his perspective he'd had a good, obedient, easy to manage kid when Tim was at boarding school, and he now had a kid who seemed to constantly be getting into fights, was disrespectful and acting out. To Jack, the difference in the equation was the school, so he wanted to send Tim off so it was easy like before. Whereas an awful lot of it was that Jack had never actually had to actively parent his kid up until this point, and the fact that he now had a 14 year old who didn't have any experience respecting him as an authority figure over bedtimes and homework and other boundaries and so just...mostly didn't listen? Jack was massively struggling with that.
Plus, Tim did have boundaries in his life - he had Bruce and Alfred providing them, both of whom had a lot more experience in terms of mentoring and parenting, and whose authority Tim respected. And because he respected them more than Jack, and was actively concealing a massive secret from Jack, Tim looked far more disrespectful and like he was picking and choosing when to behave for his father, rather than being respectful and obedient.'
Also, this change also lines up with going from two to one parents at the same time as the transition from pre-teen to teen, meaning Tim was due to become more difficult and independent anyway.

Words:Â 1,381 Summary: âDad.â Dick cried with a thorny voice. The hands that had been throwing themselves around shakily reached up towards Bruce. With his heart stuttering around the ruthless grip of Dickâs small voice, Bruceâs breath shuddered as he grabbed gently onto Dickâs hands. Leaning down closer as Dick wanted. âYes, itâs Dad. Main Tags: Relationship Study, Time Skips, Father-Son Relationship, Dick Grayson Calls Bruce Wayne "Dad", 6+1, Kinda, Family Drama My Note: This is one of mine, but this time it's about how Dick sees Bruce across the years while cherry picking canon ;) they're so precious, I'm certain this will make you feel things
With Others

Main Tags: Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Father-Son Relationship, DG Calls BW "Dad", Dick Grayson Has Eldest Daughter Syndrome My Note: A wonderful fic that spans across a long time, a fic that hurts and a fic that heals. A lot of hugging, but just not with the right person. It's not great for anyone, but most of all Dick, but he gets what he needs eventually :'D

Main Tags: background gotham OCs for flavorPOV Outsider, Identity Porn, Bruce Wayne is a Good Parent, Dick Grayson is a Ray of Sunshine, Minor Injuries My Note: Yk, when you see a worried Bruce and hurt Dick, it becomes crystal clear to everyone but them what their relationship really is đĽš
Burnt Wings by PrincessMariana
Words:Â 785 Summary: After hunters burn Dick's wings, Bruce helps heal them. Tags: Flufftober, Flufftober 2020, Hurt/Comfort, Wingfic, Alternate Universe, not edited we die like robin My Note: This was quite on the short end, but given it's a wingfic (yay!) and it was really sweet (the equivalent of a kid looking up at a parent with a question levels of aww), I added it here
Friends That Say (You're Not Alone) by ProsperDemeter
Words:Â 3,539 Summary: âWe are just finishing up in the kitchen.â âOh. I can wait here?â We. Did that mean Alfred and someone else or Alfred and Bruce? Did Bruce even spend time in the kitchen? Alfred waved a dismissive hand. âNot at all. Master Richard has been very excited to meet you.â Richard. The kid. Richard Grayson. Clark didnât feel ready to meet the child that Bruce took in. What if he was a mini-Bruce? What in the world would Clark do then? Tags: Zitka (DCU), Bruce Wayne is a Good Parent, Dick Grayson is a Ray of Sunshine, Clark Kent & Bruce Wayne Friendship, Pre-Robin Dick Grayson My Note: My HEARTTTTTT đ this was violently wholesome, Dick is adorable, Bruce is his DAD, and Clark is such a sweetheart. His POV is great.
Bruce & Teen! Dick Fics II
These are more of my favourite and recommended fanfics about Teen! Dick and Young-ish! Bruce as their relationship frays (in no particular order). Lots of teenage and family drama ahead, you've been warned.
You're my hero by Fyrefaux
Words: 4,329 Summary: Since Jason died, Bruce and Dick struggle to see eye-to-eye. Dick tries, he does, especially for Tim, but Bruce makes it so damn hard! So when the Justice League need Nightwing's help to deal with a gathering of a few Gotham villains attacking the UN, Dick doesn't expect Bruce will be any easier to deal with. Main Tags: Hurt/Comfort, Canon-Typical Violence, Miscommunication, Dick Grayson is Nightwing, Hurt Bruce Wayne, Mental Breakdown, Anxiety My Note: How intense!! It read like Jason freshly died from how angry Dick was. But once we first saw Bruce, I could tell it was somewhere in after Tim. The reconciliation at the end from when the bullet hit was so satisfying especially bc of how upset they had been with each other. I loved Dick's clingyness SO much, great fic! <3
Growing Pains by HiddenDreamer67
Words: 1,935 Summary: Dick Grayson has moved out on his own. It's going...fine, but sometimes he misses the creature comforts of back home. This is especially prevalent when Dick gets sick with the flu and has to take care of himself. While Dick wallows alone in bed, he gets a call from Bruce and expects to get scolded for not caring for himself. Fortunately for Dick, the call does not go how he expects at all. Main Tags: Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Unreliable Narrator, Sick Dick Grasyon, Dick Grayson is Nightwing, Communication, Good Parent Bruce Wayne My Note: Aww, this was short and sweet. I love how quiet this scene felt. No yelling, no big emotions, just quiet talking and reconciling in sickness. I love teen! Dick and young dad! Bruce so much and if you do, you'll love this too!
You Were Never Supposed to Leave by Geeves
Words: 2,817 Summary: âI heard about Jason.â Bruceâs lips curl. Dick takes a long, slow breath. âIâm really sorry, Bruce.â âYou werenât at the funeral,â Bruce says flatly. âPeople asked about you.â Tags: Mourning, Fix-it fic, Angst and Comfort, Bruce Wayne is Trying to be a Good Dad, Emotional Hurt/Comfort My Note: The fix-it we NEEDED. I hate the idea of physically abusive Batman (it makes no sense to me), so this version is soooo much better. Especially since he still moved to do it, but held himself back. Chef's kiss <3
Majestic Mornings by thebatdadnomad (aylooktaekook)
Words: 7,452Â Summary: What if Bruce and Dick actually found the time to talk like human beings outside a neutral cafĂŠ neither of them really liked soon after Dick left home? Main Tags: Relationship Study, Time Skips, Father-Son Relationship, Dick Grayson Calls Bruce Wayne "Dad", 6+1, Kinda, Family Drama My Note: Another one of mine, but this time it's about how Dick sees Bruce across the years while cherry picking canon ;) they're so precious, I'm certain this will make you feel things
he just wants his dad by Muddell
Words:Â 9,979 Summary: Â Dick gets many hugs over the years, but there's one he needs. It's not great for anyone, but most of all Dick, but he gets what he needs eventually :'D
riding the blues by TheResurrectionist
Words: 3,966 Summary: âWhatâs in there, anyway?â Charles asked, rolling down the window. âLooks heavy.â âA few million dollars' worth of electroshock weapons,â the kid said, dead-serious. After a moment, a grin stretched across his face. âNah, Iâm just fucking with you. Itâs old clothes, mostly.â Main Tags: Random Gotham OCs for flavor, Identity Porn, just a tad, Bruce Wayne Tries to Be a Good Parent, Dick Grayson is Bad at Feelings, Taxis My Note: I need to stop rereading this, but why should I when it's just as good every time? This outsider perspective gives us EVERYTHING and shows makes Dick learn a very important lesson without brushing off Bruce's mistakes. This is, dare I say, a perfect work of fiction â¨
Brush Through Our Problems by UnicornVomit
Words: 2,661 Summary: Bruceâs love language has always been acts of service, and his mother told him that brushing away insufferable tangles always made her feel more human. And Dickâs grown his hair out recently so⌠Main Tags: Domestic Fludd, Hurt/Comfort, Hair Brushing, Injured Dick Grayson, Protective Bruce Wayne, Titans, Sexism My Note: I didn't cry, what??? Brushing hair as a metaphor for love should've been a tag bc it's so true here. Thomas is written with period-typical views, and I didn't actually mind it. This is a read you will definitely enjoy if you love Bruce and Dick's bond.
to love is not to leave by daringyounggrayson
Words: 1,051 Summary: Dick called Alfred for a medical consult last night, so when he hears someone at his door, he's not exactly surprised. What does surprise him is that the man who came to check in on him isn't Alfred: it's Bruce. Tags: Hurt/Comfort, Hurt Dick Grayson, this fic is really just Bruce taking care of Dick, Batman Bingo, Bruce Wayne is a Good Parent My Note: It is what it says it is, a fic that is about Dick feeling sickly, Bruce caring for his sickness, and them making me feel SICK đđ /pos
Come In From The Cold by WinterSky101
Words: 11,308 Summary: The first winter after Dick leaves Batman and Gotham behind, the heat breaks in his apartment. Tags: Jason Todd is Robin, Concussions, Hypothermia, Hurt Dick Grayson, Emotional Hurt/Comfort, Arguing, Happy Ending My Note: A fix-it!! (kinda) Dick, Bruce and the chill that ended their fighting (plus itty bitty Jay and sarcastic Alf). It had the right amount of angst and ended so sweetly, I HIGHLY recommend this fic âď¸đ¨ď¸âď¸
