I’m reading this book about the changing arctic and the author stayed with the Nunamiut people of inland alaska for a while and talked to this high school kid who was like “ugh I hate going to school in the spring I wish I was hunting caribou” and I thought that was charming. you often hear about people who are devoted to preserving their traditional culture and knowledge but it’s rare to hear about someone who’s invested in the old ways out of pure teenage selfishness. school is lame and hunting caribou is awesome

most scientist create the distinction between alligators and crocodiles on the way their snouts looks and the biomes they reside but those familiar with the scaled scoundrels know that you can deduce the difference if you will see one later or in a while

a problem w existing in the 2020s is you'll just be getting on with things and then suddenly learn that the HP fandom has had some whole cultural phenomenon ending in a massive book deal and the movie rights being sold and the whole shebang and out of curiosity you go and look up the fic and its not even good.

as an aspiring author its best not to think too hard about the people getting *clenching teeth* seven figure book deals for writing mediocre HP fanfiction lest one starts rattling the bars of one's cage

99% of the time i live in a blissful world that's entirely moved on from HP and then i learn something like this and its as if the vast shadow of an underwater behemoth just passed beneath my tiny boat

we really can’t overstate how damaging it has been to indoctrinate the public with the idea that if they let themselves eat as much as they want, they’ll eat too much. human bodies, when permitted over the long term to eat as much as they want, actually get really, really good at calibrating their hunger and satiety, and will over time eat exactly the right amount for themselves. the common conception of a balanced eater as a minimal or restrained eater is absolutely wrong. balanced eaters eat quite a lot (compared to diet cultural ideas about right intake amounts), and they do so consistently and permanently. healthy, balanced eating isn’t some tightrope walk, it’s a gigantic net of total permission to eat.

fave dynamic is platonic but somethings weird with it (the weird part is an insanely deep level of devotion, trust and understanding, as well as narrative importance that is not typically allowed for platonic relationships in media, making the portrayal feel unique and queer in nature. typically best served as m+f)

Someday, Time to Orbit: Unknown will be popular enough for some up and coming youtuber to make a three hour video essay pulling apart its worldbuilding and trying to get everyone riled up about how bad my understanding of physics and sociology is. Someday. I can make it.
