Is Eiji a virgin?
A chapter discussing why Eiji might be a virgin:
Ash’s sexual experience is discussed in the story but not Eiji’s. Could it be he is a virgin?
Eiji gets easily overshadowed by Ash, but Eiji is attractive. His face is cute and he is well above average.
His personality is quiet and gentle, he would listen to all selfish demands of his partner. In other words, he is a great guy. But still, somehow it seems he doesn’t have experience with women.
The only women we’ve seen Eiji spend time with are the women in his family.
In Eiji’s room, there were zero signs of women (posters of idols etc.). Just talking to Ibe’s girlfriend made him blush innocently.
That is to say, the possibility of Eiji having experience before coming to America is very low. There is a cut scene above in which Eiji gets annoyed when he hears that Ash is popular with girls. If Eiji was popular with girls too, he wouldn’t get annoyed by Ash. More than anything this scene is a proof he is a virgin.
18-20 year olds’ heads should be full of sexual fantasies and they should have more than enough sex desire. And yet in Japan Eiji lives his life without women. And even after he arrives in America there’s no signs of him reading porn magazines. Even in Garden of Light Eiji lives with a guy, Sing, as his roommate which makes it seem he’s probably still a virgin.
Even if Eiji the gets approached by women he turns them down. Why is that?
Number one reason could be that there’s something else he is more attracted to than sex. It is said that if you have a hobby or a job that you are passionate about, it could change your sex drive. For Eiji, during puberty he was caught up with pole vaulting, after coming to America he was caught up with Ash, now being caught up with photography, there was no room for thinking about girls.
On the other hand Ash is extremely popular but he’s cold towards women with ulterior motives. He also gets constantly approached by men.

Watching the Banana Fish dub and putting aside the voice acting itself for a moment, they really stuck to the script for the translation and don't alter many words or quips from the original subtitle translation.
However, they do have Ash directly call a republican politician trying to act patriotic a pedophile, and they also have him say verbatim "A few innocent deaths? Means to an end to make America great again", when he's coerced into adding his two cents to a strategic meeting to destabilize the middle east.

Watching the Banana Fish dub and I can't tell if I'm disappointed or not- I've already watched the first episode but havnt gotten to the pole vaulting scene or Skippers death, so I don't wanna judge it too much,
BUT WHY DOES EIJI SOUND LIKE THAT😭 it's not horrible, but he's supposed to have broken English and so far he's speaking it just fine-
Ash sounds kinda like I expected and Marvin makes sense [Dino just makes me hate him more cuz he sounds exactly like I imagined] but what's the deal with eijj💔
I do get why they chose not to go with Eiji speaking broken English, but at least his dub VA is Japanese. Shorter's voice is PERFECT though. Like ON POINT.

Loved the voice they chose for skip, shorter, max and ibe. Maybe because im just so used to the sub that i have to watch it more in dub to get used to eiji and ash’s voices, but there were a lot of scenes where it was literally them but english ykwim. The whole first scene with them in the war was so peak, max finally singing oh my darling clementine in english omgg🙏🙏🙏
I STILL CANT BELIEVE THERES FINALLY A BF DUB.
For REAL skip, shorter, and max were PERFECTLY cast. Ash's voice is lower than I expected and while some of his more casual line deliveries don't hit the same, his outbursts and more emotional moments are on point. Eiji's voice is cute but he hasn't been on screen much since I'm only on ep 3. Also Zeno Robinson (Hawks bnha, Hunter toh) in the credits means the casting director meant business.

My woke take, as someone who has worked in both a public library and a school library, is that we desperately need both more books that are at a higher reading level but a less mature subject matter, and more books that are at a lower reading level but a more mature subject matter, because 8 year olds who are advanced readers are still 8 year olds and don't want to read about graphic violence and torture, and teens and adults who have learning difficulties or who are just later readers for whatever reason are still teens and adults and don't want to read about Billy the Bunny going to school or whatever the hell.
