SUMMARY:Â Brooklyn, 1924. During their rise to fame, two professional boxers at the beginning of their careers meet and begin a turbulent affair. Set to the backdrop of opulent parties, dark-lit speakeasies, and the bright spotlight of the championship ring, Dean and Cas get caught up in boxing's seedy underworld.
CHAPTER PREVIEW:
Together, they walked out into the lobby, which was relatively empty with the co-main event in full swing. Only a few people were scattered around, smoking cigarettes in small circles. Dean expected to just breeze right past them to the balmy night outside the doors. He was even halfway there when he heard his name being called by a very familiar voice.
He shelled up, and his stamina must have not been so spent as he thought it was because the sound of Casâ gravelly voice made his adrenaline spike in his temples fast enough to crack his skull.
Lisa looked around first, and Dean fixed a smile onto his aching face and turned to find Cas walking out from his place next to a pillar near the gilded ticket booths. Another man was with him, bald and probably a decade Casâ senior, with signs of age in the form of dark moles already present on his round face. He was leaning against the pillar, cigarette pinched between his fingers. He eyed Dean up and down before following Cas.
âHey,â Dean said, half excited that Cas had actually showed up and half nervous for the same reason. âWhoâs your friend?â
âThis is Uriel,â Cas said. âHeâs my cutman.â
âCongratulations on your victory,â Uriel told him in a strikingly dulcet tone. A wide grin spread onto his face and he wagged his finger at Dean. âCastiel said you were good.â
Deanâs eyes flicked to Cas, whose jaw clenched like he didnât want Dean to know he was impressed. It caused another rush of blood to hit Deanâs head.
Next to him, Lisa cleared her throat and swayed her shoulder into his, reminding Dean she was there. âUh, Lise, you remember Cas.â
âYeah,â Lisa said pleasantly. âYou left so quickly at that party, we didnât really get to say goodbye.â
Cas pressed his lips together guiltily, his eyes going anywhere but Dean. âApologies. I⌠needed to leave,â he lied, not very well.
Dean suddenly felt like a spotlight was on him again. He was sweating. He wrapped his arm around Lisaâs waist and pulled her in, just so anyone looking on could easily identify that they were together.
Casâ gaze dropped to Deanâs hand resting on her hip. He looked up again, meeting Deanâs eye, expression flat and unreadable. Dean couldnât help but feel a little dejected in the face of Casâ apathy.
âYou two ready for your bout tomorrow night?â Dean asked, trying to play through it.
âYes,â Cas answered woodenly. Dean didnât know what his problem was. He snuggled closer to Lisa just to get a reaction. Cas kept staring at him with a distant expression.
âCastiel tells me youâll be in attendance,â Uriel said, picking up the slack.
âWeâll both be there,â Lisa said brightly.
Casâ gaze snapped to her. There was the tiniest, most minuscule tightening of his lips.
A thrill shot through Dean. Cas acted tough, but he was jealous.
âExcellent,â Cas said.
An awkward silence fell then. Dean was still buzzing. Heâd almost wanted to get Lisa a cab home so he could invite Cas out for a night on the town.
âSo, uh⌠we better get going,â Dean said. âYou fellas sticking around for the main event?â
Cas nodded. He lifted his chin, unblinking and emotionless as he stared Dean down. âWe just wanted to congratulate you before going back inside, which weâve done.â
Dean hummed, knowing that wasnât the only reason Cas wanted to see him.
Another beat of silence.
Lisa broke it with, âWell, good luck tomorrow.â
Cas didnât say anything. Uriel told her, âThank you, but Castiel doesnât need it.â
Cas kept staring at Dean as if he hadnât heard a single word either of them had said. And, in truth, Dean hadnât either. On second thought, he didnât want to invite Cas out to the clubâbecause this was way more fun.
He put on a tight smile and turned into Lisa. âCâmon, sweetheart,â he said softly, and leaned in to peck a kiss to her lips. He was pretty sure he drew away with some of her lipstick on his mouth.
âOh, uhâokay,â Lisa said, taken off guard, and it was kind of cute.
Deanâs eyes moved back to Cas, who was looking off to the side. Smugness following him, Dean took Lisa by the arm and walked toward the exit.
