Trying to come up with a plausible way Murderbot could become "Dr. Grace's SecUnit". Because it would be hilarious. Murderbot would hate every one of Grace's reckless decisions. I also think it would interact with Rocky in fun and interesting ways.
So, rationale is simple, 24/7 security. Dr. Grace has a whole lot of reasons to need security, whether or not he's aware of it. Probably the whole project had a whole squad of SecUnits, and Grace just happens to get assigned Murderbot.
...So we're looking at universe fusion, more than crossover. PHM, but SecUnits exist. The question is, how long have they existed? I think not very, they may even be incredibly experimental technology.
If the technology for SecUnits are there, maybe Armando is a medical construct. Which is probably less terrifying to wake up to than an arm from the ceiling, but *also* creates potential for even more interesting interactions, because you're throwing more personalities into the mix. Mary may also be a full machine intelligence! Though probably not to the scale of ART, since she had different design motivations. Stratt probably gave her a fair bit of processing power, though.
Grace is under the misapprehension that constructs are robots, because he did not know what a construct was before he came onto the project. SecUnit does not elaborate until they are in space.
"Xenonite is a solid, aliens are real, and robots -- sorry, constructs -- are sapient!! This is my life now!" Dr. Ryland Grace, probably. He would almost certainly have a difficult time with the whole. Slavery thing.
New and interesting and a different flavor of ethically difficult solution to The Starvation Problem: construct tech analogous augmentation. I think because construct tech is very new/experimental in this universe, human augmentation is not very widespread. And possibly illegal in the US. Seems like the kind of thing that the US would try to regulate.
But yes, SecUnit's internal monologue upon one of Grace's Decisions(TM) is probably something along the lines of "fucking humans. why do you make my job harder all the time." and I think that's lovely.
