Still obsessing over that scene in Iron Lung when Ava is rapid-fire rattling off the login instructions for the computer and Simon just stops, stares blankly at the screen for a second, and then repeats the first bit of her explanation back to her, unsure, stumbling over his words, prompting her to repeat herself. Because it's just such a remarkably human moment. Simon isn't some action hero, he's not a trained soldier or an engineer. He's just a guy, with no clue what he's doing, trying to make sense of an impossible and terrifying situation. He's just a normal person trying to survive and it's like Ava is reminded of that is this moment as she very slowly repeats herself, giving him time to catch up. I love how human Simon is, how his personhood is so beautifully portrayed in every unremarkable detail. He has no idea what he's doing but he's trying, and the trying is the point. The trying is the thing worth living for.
I can't get over how human Simon was. He apologised for his outbursts, even when punching the sub at one point, he repeatedly apologised for the radiation in the exact same way like he was still reeling from the shock of that information. Whenever the oxygen ticked down you can see a new wave of horror washing over him that he needs to take a second to cope with. When Ava gives him the login details he stumbles on remembering control-shift-9 never mind the password she rattled out.
They managed to present a man with a dark past and anger issues who is also not a monster. He is a human being desperate to survive and nobody even knows his name anymore. The closest thing he had to a family he resents but still obviously misses terribly as he clings to that pendant and shakes.
And Ava. Ava too. She's in an impossible situation. She doesn't want more humans to die. She has no idea how much damage radiation has done to her. This man, who she thought was a heartless killer, is begging and pleading and apologising like a child and it's getting increasingly harder to lie to him that he's going to be ok. Her screaming and begging that this is bigger than him is so achingly desperate I can still feel it, humanity is almost entirely gone. I fully believe that she hates this as well, all of it, but if she doesn't follow orders and take calculated risks then what else is there to keep her tethered and sane? What else can she cling to? They're almost entirely alone in an empty universe. She needs this hope.
gang i've been thinking a lot recently and like. (iron lung spoilers)
Simon iron lung just makes me ache. deep down he's still just a broken and damaged kid that we don't really see enough about. he grew up being forced to be a nihilist bc of eden. when he finally escaped eden's hold and the title eden gave him ("the butcher"), he was stuck right back with people who hated him for something that wasn't his fault.
the coi, ava and especially david hated his guts from day one. david even says "if it were me, you wouldn't be given this mercy" or smth along those lines to simon in the like sorta flashbacks/audio hallucinations he has. david does NAWT like simon at all and makes it apparent when he switches up so quickly on him after simon tells him to stfu.
i just feel so awful for simon. he goes through it with eden - his brothers going as far as to stab him in the back. just to turb around and be stuck with the coi, who hates him for the explosion of filimant station which in game lore is partly their own fault.
simon just ends up at the head of eden's and the coi's conflict entirely. the movie does a great job of showing the consequences of being somewhere at the wrong time.

Mark is not a masochist, he just wanted to be flung around multiple times, break his nose, get hospitalised from getting blood in his eyes and almost drown in a pool of blood to see how much he can handle for a film.
Something something the oxygen meter going up and Simon somehow having enough air for days longer then he should and how the sub essentially becomes a part of Simon and how blood carries oxygen and what is the purpose of a real Iron lung anyways and iron is what carries oxygen in human blood after all and the blood trying to make him one with the ship because it was already breathing for him and the eldritch forces genuinely can't understand why he's still fighting to maintain his autonomy and sense of self in the face of something so much bigger than him, when it would just be so much easier and less painful to allow himself to be subsumed
Something about the indomitable human spirit in the face of something that's so incomprehensible that it can make metal breathe for you
Iron Lung is great bc it asks the question what if the sacrificial lamb was evil. What if the lamb thought itself evil. What if everyone else thought the lamb evil. What if the lamb wasn't evil what if the lamb is just a lamb, bleeting desperately to escape its undue sacrifice. What if the lamb knew it was a sacrifice from the start. What if the lamb just wanted to live. What if the lamb wanted to live so fucking bad. What if the lamb wanted the flock to live more. What if the lamb accepts its own sacrifice, leans into the glinting knife, in the hopes that the flock survives.

What do you MEAN the glass, the porthole, the only way Simon was able to see out into the world and into the blood ocean was made from scavenged parts of Filament Station? The only way Ava and the rest of the crew saw him was literally through his biggest regret, the reason he ended up there. And he pleads for someone to listen when he says Filament Station wasn't supposed to end that way, but he cannot be separated from it.
The only way he's able to be viewed is through the remnants of a station where 62 people died, and the only way he can see out is through the ocean of blood. And only when he chooses to break that glass is he finally choosing freedom in a way he fought against. He just wanted to live, and it was too much to ask for.
