Just had a thought, because there's no such thing as too much angst, in my opinion. Grace hasn't had any human contact in years by the time he and Rocky land on Erid. On top of that, he now has a long history of illness as a result of starvation, i.e. the scurvy, the multiple vitamin deficiencies, etc. In short, his immune system is cooked. Now, Simon shows up eventually, as he does, and poor touch-starved Grace is finally able to be close to another human again. That is until, BAM! He's struck down by something as simple as the common cold because his body just simply can't handle it anymore. Simon is panicking because the breadth of his medical knowledge amounts to chugging isopropyl alcohol in the back of a submarine, the Eridians are freaking out because this stranger just showed up and immediately infected their favourite alien with a deadly alien illness, and Grace is freaking out because of course the first time he's able to interact with another human in years might literally kill him.
