My thoughts exactly! I imagine he fulfilled a role on his team rather similar to the one Grace performed during Hail Mary's development. Always there, always busy, always so intently focused on a task that from an outside perspective he just sort of began to blend into the background. But when we actually stop and take a look at how he works, how he engages in the few interactions with his collegues that we get to see, it is so clear how desperate he is for connections despite struggling to form them, how alone he is in every crowded room and how much easier things would be if someone else could just reach out first for a change. I think that's what makes Rocky and Grace such a good match from the start. They were always kind of lonely, even when they weren't alone.

shout out to project hail mary for being a platonic romantic movie. like. Like. every other scene with eva or rocky harks deeply on romantic tropes. rocky and grace pressing their faces together through the xenonite. grace going to find eva on the deck of the ship, being the only one who looked for her. the dance between the blip-a and the hail mary when they first connect tunnels. eva telling grace she believes in him like a prayer. rocky being bossy and impassioned and grace being exasperated but also adoring it. the entire karaoke scene, the cuts to graces smile while she sings. rocky screaming at grace to Get The Fuck Inside during the taumeoba mission. and its a lovestory abt platonic love. at no point does the movie imply either of these relationships should be or are romantic. but they are love stories. Lowers my body into the marsh.

They could never make me hate you, complex female character whose reaction to trauma was not pretty and digestible like how people think it should be.
