Oh my god

It’s true. I started calling “the cloud” offsite storage, and the comprehension that dawns in my customers’ eyes is super gratifying. They understand external hard drives, but many couldn’t wrap their heads around this mystical floating in the air storage–because that’s not how it works at all. You’re just using space on someone else’s hard drive.

“the cloud” suddenly felt like deliberate obfuscation the second someone explained it to me, one of the first times I’d felt truly bamboozled by a tech marketing term.

To be clear "the cloud" is not a marketing term. It is tech jargon that got picked up and used by the business side of tech. Networks are often mapped either by hand or using PowerPoint (or some equivalent). When creating a network map, any storage or processing that takes place and is managed outside of the network is "the cloud" because it is represented with a cloud bubble in the map. This is done because the engineers and such don't care about the details of what happens there. "The cloud" is network structure of unknown layout where the layout just does not matter.

What a time to be alive.
