How many of those “escape human traffickers” TikTok’s are made by people who have four foster kids for the tax breaks do you think
This isn’t a shitpost. This is a real phenomenon that happens a lot. People adopt foster kids because it gets government money and then neglect the fuck out of them, or hire them out to friends as slave labor. It’s all done above-board as “community service”.
The reality of violence is that it’s boring and systemic. It’s not getting kidnapped by cartel dudes in the parking lot at Aldi to be taken to Tijuana as a forced brothel worker. It’s upstanding Christian parents adopting children whose real families were ground up and processed by the penal system or whose parents were deemed unfit due to mental illness.
The people shouting loudest about human trafficking are usually the ones most responsible for it.
There’s a pattern with reactionary rhetoric similar to projection but much more intentional, where the actions of the “us” group are rhetorically transplanted to the “other” group for the express purpose of justifying violence against the other.
“The gays are trying to convert our precious children to their sick ideology” says the right, as they tear into textbooks and create entire media networks to indoctrinate their children and the children of others.
“We don’t want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud over an American city” says the largest nuclear power in the world, the only nation to ever use such cruel bombs against another in warfare.
“They’re coming here to take your jobs,” says the xenophobe running for congress as NAFTA enters its third decade of devastating the agricultural industry of Mexico and Central America by flooding them with cheap, US-Gov’t subsidized corn.

Also, adopting/fostering kids is VERY popular in Evangelical circles because they believe it's "God's duty" to take care of children.... and also because they love indoctrinating kids into their fundie lifestyle. There are countless stories of child abuse happening within fundie circles, and adopted/foster kids are in much higher danger of it than bio kids.
There's a fascinating book called "The Child Catchers" by Kathryn Joyce that I highly recommend. It goes very in-depth into how the international adoption trade is dominated by Evangelical Christians. The demand for babies and small children to adopt far exceeds the supply, so adoption agencies often lie to and manipulate impoverished bio parents into giving up their kids. Also, despite the global lack of adoptable children, a lot of fundies somehow manage to get like 4-8 children because of their connections to religious adoption agencies (which make up the bulk of adoption agencies, btw).
I'm not even adopted or a foster kid and yet this is a topic I've done DEEP dives into because it's just so important yet so invisible. These kids need advocates.
