for those who donât remember, âmole interestâ was an experiment I did 2 years ago because I wanted to test what causes tags to go trending on tumblr. My hypothesis was that all it takes is one (1) post blowing up in an established tag to make the entire tag trend.
I had randomly generated 2 words, which is where âmole interestâ came from. I failed to consider that by generating a new tag, it wouldnât have had enough posts already in it to prove what I now call âthe mole interest effectâ.
But now it does.
In 2023, we said âfuck itâ a la mythbusters and ended up doing whatever it took to get #mole interest to trend. And it did. And it happened to be September 11th that day, and we managed to get #mole interest to trend ABOVE #9/11.
So, in the name of science, I ask you to reblog just this post. Letâs put the mole interest effect to the test.
i thought my laptop was on its last leg because it was running at six billion degrees and using 100% disk space at all times and then i turned off shadows and some other windows effects and it was immediately cured. i just did the same to my roommate's computer and its performance issues were also immediately cured. okay. i guess.
so i guess if you have creaky freezy windows 10/11 try searching "advanced system settings", go to performance settings, and uncheck "show shadows under windows" and anything else you don't want. hope that helps someone else.
hey this is apparently helping a lot of people! adding that on top of this you can also go to settings > personalization > colors and turn off transparency to also boost performance. this wasn't the Big Fix for me but might as well do that too if you're trying to optimize.
past a certain note threshold on tumblr posts you unlock a bloodborne-esque insight and the strange lives of this site's users become visible to you
(x)
we fucking found them?
Ok I know we joke about this but I just went to the settings and first clicked "adjust for best performance" and then re-checked only 1 box:
"Smooth edges of screen fonts"
My computer was running hot before I turned everything off; the office I'm in is very warm, I could feel the heat of my CPU through the keyboard. The fans were going, not as loud as they usually get, but they were still blasting.
Y'all.
I can barely feel the warmth through the keyboard now. It's been like 2 minutes. The fan is nearly silent.
Click the Windows key and start typing "System settings", and "View Advanced system settings" will pop up. Then click "Settings" under Performance:
Then you'll see this:
TURN IT ALL OFF.
I turned "Show window contents while dragging" and then turned that off again. It's up to you.
My computer is so quiet and reasonably-temperatured now and I barely notice a difference in utility, why is windows like this
maybe I can even play computer games again
The second best thing you can do for a Win10 computer is turn off whatever unnecessary services it's decided it needs to run in the background always. Some services it does need, but others are useless. Here's an article that goes into step by steps.
10AppsManager lets you uninstall bloatware. Winaero Tweaker lets you disable crap like Cortana/Copilot, ads, telemetry, internet search results when you search from the taskbar, and all kinds of other stuff, plus it gives you lots of other little options that are just nice to have (like, it can restore the old MS Paint program in place of Paint 3D). Both are totally free.
Oh, and check your startup programs in the Task Manager tab to make sure your computer isn't automatically starting eight million programs every time it boots. But I think people mostly know about that. (Unless this is me going "they only know one or two feldspars... and quartz of course.")
The first best thing you can do for a Windows computer is install Linux Mint. But some of us do need a few pesky Windows-specific programs. Bleh. Still, if you're up for a project, you can have both (and it's awesome). Here's an article about setting up a dual boot Windows/Mint system.
The other night husband and I were watching a documentary about the yeti where they were doing DNA analysis of samples of supposed yeti fur, and every one of them came back as bears.
Anyway, the next night we watched a thing about some pig man who is supposed to live in Vermont. People said it had claws and a pig nose but walked upright like a man. Now, I happen to know that sideshows used to shave bears and present them as pig men. So every piece of evidence they gave of this monster sounds to me like a bear with mange.
So now the running joke in our house is that everything is bears. Aliens? Bears. Loch Ness monster? Bear. Every cryptozoological mystery is just a very crafty bear.
Bears. Theyâre everywhere. Be wary. Anyone or anything could be a bear.
oh shit
As the OP of this post, Iâm going to threaten that if this gets to one million notes by the 10 year anniversary on 1 June 2026, one year from today, I will get a lower back tattoo of the loch ness bear monster.
it's really weird having a first dog be blind and then getting a second who can see...like how was I supposed to be prepared for this.
this creature can perceive when I put the treats up on the high shelf. or when I hide stuff behind my back. I can't fool her!! she's always watching me and she shouldn't have this much knowledge!!!
I walk around at night and I shine my flash light directly into her eyes and I'll just be standing there staring at her weird blue orbs for like 5 seconds until I realize it's probably extremely annoying to her, because she has eyes!! I'll turn on the light in the room and she gruffs and grumbles like ?? oh right!! light wakes you up!! the fuck??
the absolutely wild implication of this, that god was previously playing fast and loose with his own acts of good and evil but then had to start being considerate about what he was doing because now mankind is watching and we know.
God's worst mistake was opening our eyes and mouths, for now we can turn to him and name his sins
one of the lines of all time

to succeed in adult friendship you must remember the key tenets of child friendship:
Play Toys
Play Pretend
Snack Time
successful examples from my travels:
my SO and i have a projector. our cool neighbors have a vast dvd collection. fundamentally these are toys. we have those neighbors over for movie nights. Play Toys. more broadly shared hobbies fall into this category but it's extra fun if there's Equipment to admire and share.
ttrpgs are obvious but invaluable examples of Play Pretend. HOWEVER your options are not limited to this. i started a local writing group and this is also Play Pretend bc we all talk about our stories together. there are many such creative endeavors in this world.
having someone over for a meal is Snack Time. if you make a lil thing of it and eat at the table and make it nice with dessert and a fancy beverage to share it feels very grown up. and you will feel impressed with yourself for it. but it scratches the same itch as trading fruit snacks and suchlike.
of course these can be mixed and matched. most activities are enhanced by Snack Time if your friend targets enjoy breaking bread together.
and one begets the other. if you Play Pretend with someone for long enough they may eventually tell you about Toys they have and if you want to play too they'll probably let you. if they're nice.
life can be lonely when we live in separate boxes and worry about money all the time. this is what makes friendships hard, not growing older. but the antidote to isolation is connection, and the oldest wisdom we ever learn: share your toys. share your games. share your snacks.
The term and concept of "rent lowering gunshots" has seeped into my mental vocabulary, and I've welcomed it there. Something I'm up to is gross and weird? Good, keeps the rent low. Keeps judgy people out. Post weird shit on your blog, do weird shit to your hair, be as fucky as your heart ever wants to be. If you're not the one making the profit, make yourself unprofitable. The aposematism of brightly coloured creatures is there to warn predators, not friends.
You have no moral obligation to make yourself palatable for those who would consume you.

pick up one thing up off of your bedroom floor and replace it with a new thing
invert your pillowcases
take all the dishes in your room and make a little tower with them
swap the contents of your shirt drawer and your sock drawer
breathe directly on a plant to give it carbon dioxide

Check out my ongoing comic Crow Time. It has crows, and also neat pantheons of epic beasties.
THAT'S what happened?! All those comedy websites years ago all shifted to doing videos and lost all their money at once because just Facebook tricked them with inflated video views?!
what????? what is this about
- so between 2014-2016 facebook launches a massive âpivot to videoâ campaign to draw media orgs to their video-based features. zuckerbergâs doing rounds, saying that in the near future, newsfeeds will mostly be video, and that video is the future of media. to back this up, they release tons of wild viewership metrics for ads on facebook, enticing advertisers to prioritize video, and as a result, the media that relies upon advertisers for funding began to do the same.
- this had an industry-wide impact, and media orgs, from established news, to humor websites, to smaller creators, fire writers and those primarily focused on print, and direct resources to their video creation efforts.
- around 2016, itâs revealed that facebook completely fabricated their original numbers, likely inflating them between 150-900%. additionally, their viewership metric considered 3 seconds of a person watching to be a âviewâ (whereas youtube had a 30 second requirement for the same metric).
-Having totally restructured in order to pivot to facebook video, many media orgs were unable to recapture hard won (and and sometimes decades old) audiences. College Humor, Funny or Die, MTV News, Vice, Mic, and Vox were among those that were seriously impacted.
- after a 2018 class action lawsuit, facebook (who maintain that the whole ordeal was caused by a simple error in calculation) was made to pay 40 million in damages, which 1, is a paltry sum when we consider the 22 billion they made in profit that same year, and 2, does nothing to bring back the jobs, audiences, and media orgs they destroyed. to make matters worse, many still posit that it was never the public, but rather advertisers that preferred video over text, meaning that facebook intentionally deceived everyone involved specifically to secure more advertising dollars. so yeah, fb is evil and⌠probably should be stopped
I miss when library books used to have little paper pockets inside with a list of all the people who borrowed it and when... I hate that this is now exclusive knowledge of librarians. I do care that a miss Mariana borrowed this book in 1985 and then Dario in 1997. They're my brothers and sisters
but really, there's a million reasons why it's an issue for users and staff of the public library to have immediate access to a record of who has borrowed a specific item and when.
and that's not even about keeping the information "privileged" to the library staff, these days they don't even keep a digital record of an item's history of borrowers; once you return a book, there isn't a list of everyone thats ever taken that book out that your name gets added to (though they probably take a tally of how many times it is checked out for circulation statistics).
i think the card system is a remnant of a culture that could only exist in the world before the internet as it exists today, where this identifying kind of information wasn't always readily at your fingertips, even for those at the "information professional" level.
don't get me wrong here, i do understand the nostalgia factor to it as being part of a different time, but i think it's always important to understand why this kind of system has its flaws and has been (at least in north america) taken out of practice
bear in mind that US public libraries spent most of the past twenty years fighting off lawsuits that they were prohibited from disclosing to the public because when 9/11 happened the federal government wanted a list of every person who read certain books and the librarians had a really bad feeling about where that kind of policy would end up going, for some reason.
not keeping the records in the first place is a way for the libraries to protect themselves when they stand up for your privacy.

This was a thing in multiple libraries. We really want to protect your freedom to access information.
inspiration porn is ableist. knowing your limits and not purposely putting yourself in harmful situations is not âgiving up.â disabled people living their lives is not âgiving upâ and they are allowed to be disabled in peace. we donât need to be an inspiration to abled people. we are not here to serve and be witnessed by abled people. pictures and mentality like this enforce the idea that our lives are to be a public spectacle and that without the abled perspective, are otherwise meaningless and unfulfilled unto ourselves. this glorifies self-harm and -endangerment, and is incredibly harmful and toxic to disabled people.
protect disabled youth and stop spreading messages that weâre not good enough knowing our limitations and not spreading ourselves thin.
If you donât understand why this post it ableist, this short TED talk explains it better then I can
comments like this are why every abled person should be required to watch this ted talk
@ everyone in the notes bending over backwards to miss the point and maintain their ableism
to summarize the correct conclusion:
and a special note for any ableds who still want to argue like any of us really have the spoons:
weirdest side effect of the pandemic is how many people i know who get sick and say 'but my covid tests are negative so i should be fine' like you know other illnesses. exist. right.

The Shortest Day Of The Year
Hey look itâs more Family Lore! content warnings: discussions of mental illness, nongraphic and nonmoving video.
Depression doesnât run in my family so much as stampede, and this is the worst time of year for us. Â I pretty much live under my 10,000 lux lamp this time of year, and my sister gets into Christmas with an unusual degree of intensity for an Agnostic, to the point where nearly every available surface in the house is covered in garland, and she tried to put wreaths on the dogs last week. Â Charlie was his usual confused but accommodating self, and Arwen ate hers.
Out of us, my Mom has it the worst. Â She pretty much turns into a shadow of her usual self starting in about November. Â The sun lamps and holiday celebrations help, but sheâs exhausted and glum, and at her absolute worst on the solstice.
December of 1995 was particularly bad for her- her parents health had taken a dive, work was being a pain, and our regular sitter had cancelled for the entire first week of winter break so  I had to come into work with my parents. (My sisterâs preschool hadnât cancelled, at least. This was at Hewlett-Packard before everything went to shit, and we could be relied upon to sit in a cubicle and draw all day, so her manager allowed it).  She was extremely stressed, to the point of coming home and crying.
Dad decided to do something about this.
They both worked at HP, at the same building, on different floors. Â Dad was an engineer, and Mom wrote internal instruction manuals (everything from business plans to repair guides), and would visit each other if they happened to be on the same floor, so it was generally known they were married.
On December 21st of 1995, I went in with him a bit early, and on the way to work, dad turned to me at a red light and said:
âIf you can keep a secret from Mom, weâll get donuts.â
I am easily bribed.
I donât actually see what the paper-wrapped cone shape he puts in the trunk is, or make a note of the buildings we stopped at that he came out of with envelopes. Â I was six and had a chocolate donut. Â I had noted that heâd been listening to the same song from an old broadway musical for like, a week now, but I listened to enya on loop at the time, so I wasnât going to judge.
We arrive at work late, and the envelopes and the paper cone come in with us. Â I amuse myself by taking every single one of my dadâs OâRiley Media books off his desk and drawing the animals on the covers. Â
At lunch, Dad finally unwraps the cone and I discover heâs gotten a bouquet of a dozen white roses. We go upstairs towards Momâs cubicle and as we do so, begin to gather a crowd. Â
Every year since theyâve been together, Dad has gotten my mother flowers and sung a love song to her on their birthday, and it had become something of an event in the office to see Dad perform for her. Â But their birthday is in April, so clearly something special is going on.
We find Mom eating lunch at her desk. Â Dad stands strategically behind the cubicle wall to hide the roses.
âMay I bother you for a few minutes?â Â hes asks.
âSure.â Says mom as I climb into her lap. The gathering crowd shuffles closer. Â Someone brought a video camera.
âYou have an audience.â Â She observes as he steps out from behind the wall with the roses. Â She gasps, delighted and completely surprised.
He then sings the song heâs been listening to and rehearsing for a good week now, âThe Shortest Day Of The Yearâ from Rogers & Hartâs âBoys From Syracuseâ Â Since I was six and didnât have my own video camera, youâll just have to listen to the Broadway recording, but my Dad does have a very nice tenor:
There isnât a dry eye on the floor, mostly because everyone came over to see what the fuss was. Â The women are crying because itâs romantic, the Men are crying because they arenât nearly as cool and romantic as my dad is, Gay Charles who arranged my parentâs relationship in the first place is crying because 7 years on this is happening. Iâm crying because it seems the thing to be doing.
Mom hands the roses to me, gets up and grabs Dad to pull him into a dip for a kiss, which is really impressive because sheâs a good 9 inches shorter than him.
âI love you.â Says Mom.
âI also arranged for my parents to watch the kids next week and booked us into that B&B you love for three days after the project is finished so you can have a vacation.â Â Says Dad, awkwardly hanging off her shoulders.
âI really love you.â says mom, kissing him again.
*
Itâs December 20th 2018 today and itâs another Bad Year for seasonal depression for Mom. Â Itâs been cloudier and darker than usual, sheâs on new photoractive meds right now so she canât use the sunlamp and current events are what they are.
Dad called me earlier today to ask me order a dozen white roses because Mom gets email alerts on her credit card and he wants it to be a surprise.
Heâll pay me back at christmas, but Iâd do it anyway because Iâm ridiculously lucky to have these romantic dorks for parents.

New link (the one above didnât work) but this beautiful love story has been stuck in my head for a week and my husband (completely unaware of this post) came home with chocolate donuts this morning. May we all have such a lovely shortest day of the year.
Hey! Thanks for finding this story and adding the new link! itâs that time of year again, and I too went out before the storm to get my beloved Solstice Donuts, and got a call from my mom that Dad has managed to acquire a small potted rosebush for her this year, as it too needs a Sun-Lamp.
