Until death, all defeat is psychological.
This was the crossword puzzle in the New York Times yesterday.
Tausig’s crossword is a so-called Schrödinger puzzle, named for the physicist’s hypothetical cat that is at once both alive and dead. In a Schrödinger puzzle, select squares have more than one correct letter answer: They exist in two states at once. “Black Halloween animal,” for example, could be both BAT or CAT, yielding two different but perfectly correct puzzles. Only 10 such puzzles have now been published in Times history.
It’s the theme of Tausig’s puzzle, though, that makes it special. Four entries in Thursday’s crossword can include either an “F” or an “M.” Both are correct; neither is wrong. For example, “Part of a house” can be either ROOF or ROOM. The long “revealer” answer, tying those select entries together and spanning 11 squares smack-dab in the middle of the puzzle, is GENDER FLUID.
This puzzle, with “M”s and “F”s that aren’t fixed, is a masterful blend of subject and structure. “It potentially really evokes what gender fluidity is, which is not moving back and forth between two poles, but actually not being committed to either pole, and potentially existing in many states at different times,” Tausig said.
Terrible things happening in my kitchen.
I'm cleaning owl pellets.
It's very gross.
Gradual process.
This is for jewelry making! I figure you can't get much more ethically sourced for bones than "an owl ate it"
There are at least five skulls and sooooooooo many mandibles and lots of vertebrae. Also lots and lots of ribs.
Basically I've soaked the pellets in a bleach solution to break them up and sanitize them then skimmed off a lot of the fur and assorted gunk and picked out the biggest bones and put them in water to finish soaking off the fur and now I've got a ton of itty bitty bones to pick out of the remaining sludge.
Here are the most complete skulls (and one mandible)
This was like. Five pellets.
A couple more skulls (toothpick for scale) and the last of the bones I'm going to sort through. The shallow glass container has the mostly-de-furred skulls in soapy water, the taller jar has a ton of small bones in plain water just soaking the gunk off.
How are you going to make them into jewelry?
Bone mandala pendants in resin, or teeny tiny vertebra pendants. The skulls are too big for that so I'm probably going to just gild them and put them on a frame for a painting.
Basically like this!
The process here is:
Clean the bones
Paint the pendant backing
Plan the layout of the pendant from a selection of cleaned bones
Put down a thin layer of resin and place the bones, then let the resin cure so that the bones don't float or move when you fill the tray
Fill the tray to the top with resin, pop any bubbles before letting it cure
Once it's cured and full, carefully drip on more resin to create a domed top that covers all raised parts of the bone and magnifies the contents of the pendant.
Also I'm now sorting through the tiny bones and have found two more skulls, I love my owl so much.
Well done. I love this. These are all such small and difficult bones.

as humiliating as it is to repost myself from a light-mode-user's reddit screenshot, i cannot allow this year's zenquish to go uncelebrated.
celebrate my favorite holiday with me, my friends.
if the emperors of rome can add extra months that actually fuck the calendar up i'm allowed to add a new month that lasts 0.0000 picoseconds
the last holiday that hasn't been commercialized
i made this up when i was a little kid and nothing would make me happier than to see people celebrating it for years to come
i forgot how much tumblr loves a fake holiday
The other option was one of the bite risk tags they put on cages at the shelter, because no one knows the flag colour for biting (houndstooth).
These are really relaxing to make.
But actually? I want to have a biting flag. I also love the bite risk tags.

Wild Turkey fight by Ken Phenicie Jr
After running a thousand errands, working hours of overtime, and being stuck in seemingly endless gridlock traffic commuting to and from their jobs, millions of Americans were disheartened to learn that it was, in fact, only Tuesday.
“Tuesday?” San Diego resident Doris Wagner said. “How in the hell is it still Tuesday?”
Tuesday’s arrival stunned a nation still recovering from the nightmarish slog that was Monday, leaving some to wonder if the week was ever going to end, and others to ask what was taking Saturday so goddamn long.

A true story of something that happened to me at a con a few years ago! I just couldn't believe that bag saldjaldjalkd!!!
its normal for thru hikers to cut down pack weight in unconventional ways, like cutting the handle off their toothbrushes or swapping a nalgene for a smart water bottle, but my friend is taking it to the next level by getting an orchiectomy like 1000 miles into her 2000+ mile hike. That's commitment to the ultralite life.
