only 62 more frogs until we hit 8,000 species described. the moment we've all been waiting for
there are an average of about 150 new amphibian species described per year so I remain hopeful that 2026 will be the year of 8,000 frogs
I do love that somebody tagged tumblr's own frog scientist on this post. chop chop dr scherz, we've got 62 more frogs to discover and you're the only frog scientist any of us knows
GUYS amphibian species of the world is still at 7,994 species of frog BUT amphibiaweb is at 8,008 species of frog, and do you know who is a co-author on the 8,000th species of frog there???? TUMBLR'S OWN FROG SCIENTIST DR SCHERZ
I'm in awe of how we ran historical revisionism on the civil rights movement so bad that people truly believe it was quiet self-sacrifcial non-disruptive christ-like activism that forced progress and not â like â the incredible economic pressure of boycotts and outbreaks of illegal civil disobedience
Yapping to the choir but eughhh it burns me up girl effective protests have to be loud and inconvenient for change to happen because silent cries die in the dark that's the entire pointtt
Also, a lot of the so called harmless examples used for peaceful protests were specifically supposed to be disruptive as all hell. Like, take sit-ins, for example. What you were probably told is that black people just refused to leave white only establishments to make a point.
But how they actually worked was manipulating racist policies to cause as much of a delay as possible. They'd sit down at the bar to order (that's how those restaurants worked, you had to sit down to order and there weren't many tables) and when the waiter said they couldn't serve them, they'd respond that they would wait until they could be served. And then all their friends who they organized this with would do the same, and they would sit there at every seat until they're holding up the whole line. Then nobody could order and the restaurant was forced to either close, serve them, or try and fail to work around them. It wasn't just to make a point, it was to cost them money and time.
Even what was framed as "quiet peaceful protest" was actually very disruptive both socially and economically.
Does this look quiet, peaceful, nondisruptive?
And the struggle didn't stop after formal integration, once the Civil Rights act had passed. Because even when they are legally required to serve you, they can make you really fucking uncomfortable and threaten you and the cops probably will take their side.
For one example, there was a cafe that would serve Black people, but would then publicly break the dishes so that no white customer would ever have to eat off a dish a Black person had eaten off of. This was done publicly, right as the Black diner was done eating. The waitress takes the plate and smashes it. This is a signal both to the white diners "see, we hate them just as much as you do, you're safe here" and also a threat of violence to the Black diners. "If you're not careful we'll smash you just like we did this plate."
But at the same time, if Black people go there and eat every day ... how long before the cafe can't afford to do that? How long before they have broken so many dishes that it's eating into their profits? How long before the white diners start getting used to eating alongside Black people and simply don't care as much any longer, or start getting annoyed at the noise and fuss and mess?
Black people eating in white establishments was loud, inconvenient, and disruptive. Because that's the nature of challenging the status quo.
All of this, plus a couple of additional thoughts:
1. Folks in these movements trained. They were disruptive and they were strategic about it and they trained so that they could stay calm in terrifying situations and create the targeted disruptions they wanted to create and not get goaded into deviating from that. Absolutely badass.
2. Not at all a criticism of OP because I think their description of people thinking it was "quiet self-sacrificial non-disruptive christ-like activism" is dead on, but I think that description itself speaks to the same kind of revisionism re: the Christ of the Gospels and how disruptive he was and why, and it's important to remember that, especially in this era of renewed christofascism. Rev. Dr. King was a prophet and you will never convince me otherwise.
As I told my students a few weeks ago:
Nonviolence is not a goal, it is a strategy. A deliberate strategy at a calculated time in response to violence of the oppressor, which can be effective if it shames the perpetrators. See: why Selma or Montgomery was chosen by the SCLC (they had the most racist unhinged sheriffs who would deploy maximum force, which got shown on nationwide broadcasts and finally moved the public).
Nonviolence doesnât mean you donât carry weapons if necessary, as many organizers in Selma did. Nonviolence doesnât mean that you accept that people will throw bombs into your familyâs home, as they did to MLK.
And yes, the absurd simplification and bastardization of this strategy is deliberate. It went from being a tool for fighting for liberation to being a justification for more violence and oppression used against future generations of protestors who didnât meet the standard of perfectly obedient nonviolent non disruptive protestors. Which of course there is no such thing.
And itâs all a lie. Know that people in the movement, at the time, were called criminals, because they knowingly and deliberately broke laws with the idea that theyâd get arrested. Know that most of the country hated King at the time of his death. Know that no movement demanding change from the system will ever be loved by those in power.
once again I feel I must mention Erica Chenoweth & Maria J. Stephan's "Why Civil Resistance Works: The Strategic Logic of Nonviolent Conflict".
For more than a century, from 1900 to 2006, campaigns ofnonviolent resistance were more than twice as effective as theirviolent counterparts
For most of Americaâs history, one of the most righteous anti-white supremacist tactics available was looting.
And thereâs a book that came out of it:
A Riotous History of Uncivil Action
So I thought y'all would like this too This great white comes to the jersey shore every year and this year they named her and have been tracking her hella so this is Mary Lee and she decided to show herself under this rainbow for pride month A true gay icon

For those who don't know: Ikumi Nakamura is the woman who was senior artist on Bayonetta, and designed the titular character along with Hideki Kamiya. Their greatest moment of bonding was over their insistence that Bayonetta keep her glasses on at all times. Nakamura cannot go to horny jail. She is the warden.

Whoever snuck "all colors are beautiful" onto the cars is a hero.
(this is from 2023 btw but still hilarious)
one thing I've noticed while reading the early chapters of Frankenstein, that could easily be missed in the fast pace of events, is Victor's displaying rather obvious signs of grief. Before the linear understanding of grieveing as a process that goes through definite stages (reductive but I digress), grieveing was seen as a kin to madness, erratic and even dangerous if not contained by proper social etiquette. We see him alienating himself, switching between deep despair and anger by the quick change of circumstances, Kremp becames a catalyst of ego death while Waldman induces mania in him, he's both happy and disgusted by new human connections. You can see how he was struggling the moment he left Geneva alone, at the age of seventeen in a moment of temporarily numbness to the very recent passing of his mother. I think Mary Shelley wrote this on purpose, and through this we can understand the creation to be driven by grief as much as unchecked ambition. crimminaly underexplored in adaptations in my opinion
I can't keep having the same conversations about love languages, mbti, iq, bmi, "brain fully formed at 25" and shit over and over again...
these things exist on a spectrum from untrue to straightforwardly racist btw. so if we could retire them forever that'd be nice.
âLove Languagesâ are just common couples therapy techniques mangled and repackaged by an unqualified homophobe. Relationships generally need all 5 love languages to be fulfilled, which is to say, everybody needs to communicate with, spend time with, and do things for their partners, and thatâs got nothing to do with any special way you communicate affection.
MBTI has been proven completely ineffective at predicting anyoneâs success at a particular job, and half the people who take it twice will get different results. Reputable psychologists do not recognize it, and the company that owns the rights to it uses it to scam people. People donât adhere to strict binaries in basically anything. Very few people are going to be exclusively introverted or extroverted. Itâs just astrology repackaged as pseudoscience. Shockingly enough, you canât boil the complexity of the human experience down to a dozen Types of Guy.
The concept of IQ is flawed from the startâ âintelligenceâ is an abstract concept that encompasses many different skills, from social intelligence to emotional intelligence to the very narrow kind of problem solving intelligence IQ tests generally measure for. It cannot predict how fast you learn, how much you know, or how logical and well read you are. It mostly measures how good you are at solving puzzles. Coincidentally, itâs also a pretty good predictor of income and education level, take a guess why. Most peopleâs IQ will change throughout their lives, because itâs inconsistent bullshit weâve only held onto this long because weâre still kinda hoping we can breed the ubermensch. IQ tests and the way they attempt to categorize people are explicitly eugenicist and racist.
BMI was developed by a man known as the grandfather of eugenics, who first of all was a mathematician, not a doctor, and second never intended the formula to be used to categorize individuals. Itâs intended to give a rough estimate of obesity in populations, and itâs not even good at that. It hangs around because of fatphobia and insurance companies who want it as an excuse to charge fat people more.
The study which determined peopleâs prefrontal cortex was still developing at 25⌠stopped measuring at 25. Evidence suggests your brain probably never stops developing. Stop infantilizing grown adults. This is a branch off from the larger mess of misinformation surrounding fMRIs.
If you havenât put together what all these things have in common yet, hereâs the moral of the story: STOP TRYING TO CATEGORIZE PEOPLE. STOP TRYING TO PUT PEOPLE IN A GODDAMN BIOLOGICAL HIERARCHY. EUGENICS IS BAD, AND WILL ALWAYS BE BAD, NO MATTER WHOâS DOING IT.
The Olympic Games went on hiatus from 426 CE to 1859 CE, a total break of 1433 years, and now theyâre the most popular event of their kind in the world. Donât sweat taking a few months off from your fanfic - things have bounced back from worse!
i've been phasing the phrase 'google it' out of my vocabulary and going back to 'look it up'. fuck you youve lost your generic trademark privileges

The thing is nobody at pride is evaluating you to determine if youâre queer enough to be there because theyâre too busy thinking âitâs so hot outâ and âwhy is this lemonade 12 dollars?â
Modern AU breaking news: aura farming bisexual trio seen strolling around at the local Troll Market, "They're regulars" vendors say.
Adam is kind and helps vendors or other regulars when they need a strong hand (his shirt is a gift from monster-fucker friend, iykyk. đ)
Victor is soooo intrigued by the weird anatomies of the creatures in the market.
Everyone in the market is fucking scared of the woman who befriended the tooth fairies.
