You know how canaries were historically brought into coal mines, because if the mine was full of carbon monoxide the canary would die first and the miners would be able to escape before they died too?
I just found the greatest thing.
This is a canary resuscitator.
When the miners notice the canary getting sick with carbon monoxide poisoning, they can close that circular hatch so no more gas gets into the canary cage, and open the valve on that oxygen tank to keep the canary breathing. In other words, they made a spacesuit for birds.
By immediately giving the canary access to clean air, the miners can save it from the poison. The bird lives. To be clear, this is not for economic purposes, this was specifically created because the miners felt bad and wanted to save the bird.
Isnât that just the perfect demonstration of what humans are like? We started sacrificing small creatures to save ourselves, and then felt bad and spent our valuable resources on saving the critters too. Because yeah the canary was the only way to test for CO, but itâs a living creature too, dammit!
all the notes on that post are absolutely dumb as fuck and not worth engaging with but i genuinely wanna know what this person thinks the conditions were for people prior to every socialist revolution. do you think people were well off before they revolted. do you think they waited until they had enough free time and energy to schedule an overthrow of empire in a way that didnt interfere with their workweek. do you think everyone being ground under jackbooted heels has simply laid down and let it come as it may
Back when I worked at walgreens I didn't know witch hazel was a real thing people would come in asking for it and I'd be like yeah it's on aisle 3 next to the wolfsbane and eye of newt you fucking idiot bastard
By talos this can't be happening again

I want everyone to know that there are queers in the hollers of Appalachia, in the bayous and marshland of the Deep South, in Southwestern deserts, through the Ozark mountains and up to the Rockies. There are queers in the Great Plains, there are queers in rural America, in trailer parks of the Osage foothills. In the places you least expect us to live, we are here, carving out community and fighting for liberation with pride despite it all. Stop forgetting about us. Stop overlooking our experiences and our impact just because we donât live in a Big Gay City. And for the love of God, stop looking at us with pity.
Also, there are ALLIES out here.
I live in a no-stoplight town in the south. There are three tractor stores and two animal supply stores within 25 minutes of my house, and we finally got a grocery store, apparently some time this year. We have no McDonald's or any other kind of chain restaurant.
I saw a redneck at the country store face down a guy whining about the trans menace and tell him to act like he had fuckin' southern manners, or move up north.
And that redneck was a better ally than most people online
queer existence is part of the human condition. queer people exist everywhere, in every community. queer people are part of LGBTQ history. and it's way too easy to overlook the experiences of queer folks who live in regions where, for one reason another, other people think they can't exist or don't belong. i fully think that everyone should read about the lived experiences of people outside of their origins. so. i have (America-focused) memoir and nonfiction recommendations!!!

i think if you aren't absolutely deranged about at least one (1) fictional woman you should go ahead and make that a personal project
Wait. Personality test. Reblog with whether you hate it when someone sings along to the music in the car or you think singing along is cool. Personally, I HATE it.
if itâs a silly/upbeat song singing along is great!
if its a deep emotional song shut up and be sad with me

Reblogging again. Firefox is an excellent, safe and fast browser and everyone should consider using it.
Donât just consider it. If you have the ability to switch to Firefox, this is your official notice to do it.
Stop everything youâre doing and go download and install Firefox.
If youâre saying, âwell, I need Chrome because I need such-and-such extension for my jobâ, the computer will not explode if you install another browser. Use Chrome ONLY for work tasks and use Firefox for everything else. If youâre concerned about losing your bookmarks, Firefox can import your Chrome bookmarks.
[ID: Firefox Library window. The âImport and Backupâ panel is expanded, displaying the option, âImport Data from Another Browserâ, which is also circled with a red MS Paint ellipse. ID end.]
And, donât forget to install uBlock Origin while youâre at it.
Forgot a thing. Subscribe to Mozilla VPN for bonus points. Itâs basically the only truly secure VPN service in the world right now.
For $5 a month, you can completely conceal your online activities from your ISP in a manner that isnât just immediately monetised or turned over to the cops. No, itâs not free, it does cost money, but the money doesnât go to line a billionaireâs pockets.
I wonder how much of this is because of work/school from home forcing people to use Chrome so all their stupid monitoring softwares and platforms can work.
This is also your reminder that you don't have to use just one browser. You can use chrome for all the monitoring bullshit your office wants you to run and use firefox for everything else.
Be sure to add the multi account containers extension to your firefox, which allows you to be logged in to multiple accounts on the same website at the same time in the same window but in different tabs.
look on my five open tumblr accounts (not sideblogs, accounts!) ye mighty and despair.
Firefox is super good, folks. It's good in a general "google shouldn't own everything in the entire fucking world" sense AND in a "this is an actual good product that does lots of cool shit" sense.
ALSO make sure to add the Ublock origin extension on Firefox - I haven't seen a youtube ad in five years and you don't have to either.
While you're at it, why not add the Wayback Machine extension so that if you go looking for a page that has been taken down the wayback machine will automatically offer you an archived version instead; also handy for documenting people's shitty takes and winning arguments after they delete the original post!
Worried that Firefox is going to slow down your computer? In benchmarks, modern versions of chrome and firefox are pretty much the same speed but you can still install the auto tab discard extension ANYWAY so that it will snooze unused tabs in order to keep your computer running faster. Set it to sleep, discard, close, and store tags at your discretion!
And while you're at it: install Firefox as your mobile browser for android and add those extensions to your mobile browser! Mobile adblock is here, baybee, save your data and enjoy a better mobile experience! And install it on iOS! iOS can't add extensions, but at least it's better than safari, and if you want a somewhat more private iOS browsing experience try firefox focus for iOS (which is also available on android but you can accomplish the same thing with extensions).
Anyway, firefox is good.
Also: in January 2023, Chrome is making some changes to plugin architecture that effectively neutering adblockers. If you want good adblocking, you wonât have it in Chrome. Use Firefox
(In fairness, some Chrome-derived browsers like Vivaldi and Opera have openly parted ways with Chrome about this, and more power to them, but Firefox is the way to go.)
