the first time he was a little nervous, turning to trinity and asking, “hey, is it cool if i like… lay on the floor?”

it becomes one of those behaviors of his that trinity deems slightly weird. eventually she gets used to it, and doesn’t even bat an eye when she has to step over him, sprawled across the kitchen floor, to get to the fridge. sometimes he falls asleep, most times it’s just for the comforting familiarity.

baran, however, does not have the same knowledge, and one afternoon, about 2 months into dating trinity, she opens the apartment door with trinity in tow carrying groceries. that’s when she finds dennis inexplicably laying loose-limbed along the living room floor.

immediately considering the worst, a habit she’s picked up since working at the pitt, she braces herself to face whatever may be wrong with him. looking back at trinity, she whispers, “don’t go in there… let me take care of this.” locking the door behind her, baran anxiously creeps towards dennis’s slack body.

confounded and worried, trinity sets down the bags and searches for the spare key under the mat. then, she cracks the door open to peek inside and sees the scene playing out. silently laughing to herself, she sneaks up behind baran, who’s about to check for a pulse, and gently tosses a loaf of bread at dennis. it lands right on his sternum, and he’s suddenly resurrected.

simultaneously, baran and dennis sigh out the words, “what the fuck.” baran out of confusion, dennis out of annoyance.

unable to hold her laughter back anymore, trinity starts heading to the hallway to get the rest of groceries, “we got white bread for the white boy!”

So like she gets the recordings and realizes Yao and Ilyukina are dead before he wakes up so he’s got no pilot, no engineer, and no memories.

And then you also have to remember that the EXISTENCE of these recordings and the fact they were accompanied by the Taumoeba means that an amnesticized Grace somehow managed to save earth without a pilot or engineer and shoddy memory that only vaguely gives him enough to work with as he works.

But the movie does a GREAT job of making sure the audience sees Nikki as the victim she is. This is not about what she's doing to him. It's about what he did to her. The instances where we see Nikki is trapped within her own body and has no agency: "I've never been with you, Bear" and "Would you like to talk to her?"

The trailer could give the impression of "the girl he loves became obsessed with him", but the reality of the narrative is "he was so obsessed with this girl he ruined her entire life".

-the casualness of the one wish willow store employees is supposed to be unsettling but it kinda clues you in to the fact that this is not an inherently evil power, it was just used for an evil wish

-Wish Nikky is also a victim, and the film demands empathy for her. For all the people praising the Hansel and Gretel read, I find what comes after much more impactful. Nicky tells a room full of people that she is the luckiest woman in the world because no one will ever feel as she is feeling, how deeply, how profoundly, how completely she loves bear. And the fact that she know she cannot be Nikky, and that because of that Bear cannot ever love her as much as she loves him is destroying her.
