âThis trope is used often for laughs by having a male character defend his sexuality while not coming off as homophobic. I.e. âI'm not gay! âŚnot that there's anything wrong with thatâ.â
âŚwhile the page for this trope doesnât list any explicitly romantic connotations, it is often implemented in situations where Character A suggests something as a âjokeâ, then backtracks, just in case Character B really is down for that kind of thing. In this context, with Angeloâs romantic lighting, and the question that precedes Johnâs â...which is fine, by the wayâ, itâs understandable that Sherlock thinks Johnâs propositioning him.
