They're pissed it's capable of making Disney characters.
So are all you people cheering for Disney.
"This only applies to exact likenesses!"
Have you NEVER put your FOOT in a DOOR? Have you never seen someone with power use one concession to get another...abortion, trans rights, censorship? Abuser/groomer/cult tactics work this way too. We all hate those, right? We all see that for what it is, right?
Also, they're making their own deal with a different AI company. This was never about what you want it to be about! Never! They're in the paperwork saying they care about workers, that this will affect jobs, be bad for the industry. Then they turn around and are trying to make a fucking deal with OpenAI? WHILE suing Midjourney! On top of their horrendous track record of treating artists like shit? They have the gall to invoke concern for employees? All that and you still believe Disney cares about its workers? Where are you people actually standing?
DISNEY IS ALWAYS IN THE WRONG and the idea that in suing Midjourney they would somehow take down AI and do us all a favor was invented by y'all and was not actually their intent.
You should not be cheering this. Not because Midjourney should be defended, I don't give a fuck about the company itself. I give a fuck about the legal precedent this sort of thing sets. If they get someone to say that they can seek damages if something is capable of reproducing their work, they can come for any graphics program. Adobe would no doubt be GLAD to bend over for them with just a little urging. And since people can make art without AI, it came free with their fucking humanity as everyone seems to like saying, and since it was people who made official Disney art in the first place, people are capable of reproducing an exact likeness too. One individual just like you is even less valuable to them and easier to crush than a company of any size. Midjourney could at least be beaten down and acquired; the corpse could be useful to them. You are not useful as anything but an example to others. The best you could hope for is just being so small they don't notice you.
I'm not defending the wrong things people and companies do with any sort of technology, including using AI to replace humans. That idea makes me sick to my stomach. It HURTS me.
I'm just saying that obscenely wealthy companies like Disney are not and never ever ever will be defending the rights of people like you or me or the individual artists you love and want to protect. Especially with a government in the USA that has active motivation to crush the first amendment like a bug. Courts here are not going to uphold your rights to make not-for-profit art or transformative works or accidentally similar work under copyright law. Disney WROTE a lot of that copyright law.
Also, they steal people's art. Which I thought is a thing most anti-AI people are specifically super mad about.
Stop cheering for them. This is actually really, really concerning.
