Hey. Heyhey. Do me a favor real quick.
If you don't already know you have issues doing so, squat down real quick. Bend your knees all the way and touch the floor. Just make sure you can do it. Okay? For me? And then stand up all the way and make sure you can balance on one foot.
Like. You don't need to blow it into some huge thing. Just. Make sure all your bits and peices still work the way you think they do.
Can you turn your head to look behind you without twisting your shoulders? What about standing on your toes? If you sit down on the floor can you get back up without using your hands?
If there was ever a tumblr post worth sending to your mom, it's this one.
Just saying, bodies are a use it or lose it kinda thing.
okay so every time I see this post crop back up in queues and notifications I end up thinking about it. Because I made the post and even I'm still doing the thing where I read the post about maintaining range of motion in my delicate meatsuit and I nod and hmm and think yeah that's a good idea and then dont move from where I'm curled up shrimp style staring at the nightmare rectangle.
So like. Thinking real hard about moving doesn't count as moving. Major bummer. Anyways. Joints.
to anyone in the areas impacted by the wildfire smoke, my #1 biggest piece of advice as someone whos been dealing with wildfire smoke in the NW united states for years, is build yourself a Corsi-Rosenthal Cube
they perform as well as expensive HEPA air cleaners, and are comparatively VERY inexpensive. all you need is a box fan, 4 air filters, a piece of cardboard, and some duct tape!!!!
i think it took us maybe a half hour to put ours together, if that, and we replace the filters every 3 months. it's really made a HUGE difference, both when the air quality is bad, but also with our allergies
Saw these easy to read instructions on Twitter. Stay safe 💚
Also just a handy, DIY air filter in general, if a bit bulky. For a less bulky and cheaper (but also less effective) solution, you can simply tape one filter to the fan, cut a shroud if you'd like.
just FYI, this is quite literally what the climate scientists at my work who specialized in wildfire smoke impacts recommend. it works great, it's cheap to make, and it will make a noticeable impact on your air quality.
i have asthma & keep one of these running in my room perpetually. after I set it up the difference in my sleep quality was pretty much night and day. Dont waste your time on proprietary air filters; SIMPLY bust out the duct tape
Have you ever talked about cultural appropriation in atla? Do you talk about that type of stuff?
I love the cultural research for atla and stuff but sometimes I wonder what's appreciation and what's appropriation in the series, yknow? :(
This is going to be my most liberal-arts-college-essay-ish post to date. You've been warned...
First off, I'm going to go with the Wikipedia definition of the word:
Cultural appropriation is the adoption of an element or elements of culture or identity by members of another culture or identity in a manner perceived as inappropriate or unacknowledged.
Within that broad definition, I'd like to propose two sub-types of cultural appropriation:
Social cultural appropriation
Economic cultural appropriation
While something can be both types of appropriation, the intents are different. Social cultural appropriation is when someone appropriates a culture for their own personal enjoyment. To me, this is the more subjective of the two types.
For example, in my experience, Asians in Asia generally aren't bothered by non-Asians wearing the traditional clothing. They view it as cultural appreciation, as people putting in the effort to enjoy another culture. This is a perfectly understandable and valid take.
However, Asians in Western countries will generally feel these actions are more appropriative, because we are a marginalized identity in Western nations. We're forced to reckon with not being entirely accepted by the mainstream culture (hegemony), resulting in our underrepresentation in Western media and issues facing our community being disregarded by broader society. We also have to deal with the features and culture we were born with being mocked and discriminated against by the hegemony. As such, we're going to be more attuned to the societal power imbalance at play, when a non-Asian (usually white) gets social capital for the same features or cultural markers that marginalize Asians. The implicit message is that people of Asian descent are innately devalued by Western society. These are the kind of feelings and nuances we're trying to capture when we say something feels like "cultural appropriation". And it is also valid to feel this way.
This is why I say that social cultural appropriation is subjective. Whether an act is appreciative or appropriative is determined by the person perceiving the act. In the context of ATLA, I view it as a mixture of both but also perceive it as more appreciative than appropriative. I've posted before that ATLA is very much a product of capitalizing on pop culture trends in the early-to-mid 2000s. At the same time, the amount of effort that went into depicting different Asian cultures and time periods was leagues above any other Western cartoon of the period. So, for me, the good outweighs the bad. But it's ultimately up to your personal sensibilities. And, for those wanting to engage with other cultures, all you can really do is try and read the room of who your audience is going to be. It also never hurts to cite your sources.
On the other hand, economic cultural appropriation is pretty straightforward: It's when a hegemonic institution takes the culture of a marginalized group, repackages it, and profits from it. In turn, the marginalized group receives no financial benefit from the appropriation. They may even face social pressure to disengage from the very cultural product they created, due to the cultural creation becoming intertwined with and falsely credited to the hegemonic culture. The most famous example of this would be rock and roll music, thanks to Elvis.
And, unfortunately, Avatar: The Last Airbender was very much a work of economic cultural appropriation. It was a story that was unambiguously inspired by Asian/Indigenous culture and history, yet the primary beneficiaries of the show's success were white. The institution that produced it was mostly white (Nickelodeon), the showrunners were white (Bryke), the OST composers were white, a majority of the VAs were white, and most of the writers were white.
Of course, when people ask if something is cultural appropriation, they're not simply asking for you to validate what they're observing. There's also the implied question of "Is it morally irresponsible for me to enjoy this piece of media?" To that, I would say that we can't really undo the problematic aspects of the source material. However, we can look at how the media property is being handled in the current day.
In that respect, I will give Bryke credit. In the modern day, Bryke have used this Asian/Indigenous-inspired franchise they've created to help carve out career opportunities for POC; most notably, through the casting in the Netflix adaption and the voice casting for the upcoming animated movie. Additionally, supplementary materials like the Chronicle of the Avatar novels have been authored by Asian writers and the Water Tribe costumes in the Netflix adaption were created by actual Indigenous craftspeople.
This is similar to how I approach my enjoyment of ATLA. Rather than dismiss the franchise for its problematic elements, I prefer to take a reparative reading approach and use the property as a jumping off point for bringing attention to various Asian/Indigenous cultures and histories.
Damnit. Mystery Flesh Pit guy uses AI.

A mouth-watering fuck-ton of hand angle references.

BLESS YOU, YOU WONDERFUL PERSON
“so this week my town made the news for—” nope
“there’s a restaurant two miles from my house called—” nope
“today I learned [celeb] went to my high school—” nope nope nope nope nope
these are all real posts I’ve seen on the internet that allowed me to identify a user’s hometown instantly. if it’s a small town, that’s doubly dangerous, because a bad actor could trace you just by a unique first name or selfie you once posted. in an age where doxxing and stalking are some of the worst I’ve ever seen it, you HAVE to think twice about what you’re posting online.
i once saw a 13-year old post an image they noted as being “a few miles from their house.” it had a theater in the shot with a unique enough name to be local. one google maps search, now everyone knew not only what city they lived in, but the possible neighborhoods in that radius too. and they had a HUGE following…who all knew this was a 13-year-old child.
so yeah. not to sound like a 90s internet safety PSA…but I’m gonna be that PSA for a minute.
if you’re posting an image, there is NO need to say that you live there. you could just be traveling. “saw this in Montana” is better than “saw this by my house!”
before you post about a venue, especially a restaurant or small store, check and see if it’s local—CRUCIALLY if it has only one or two locations. people might travel to arenas or convention centers, but they’re far less likely to be traveling to Bartleby’s Fish and Chips. if it’s an anecdote and you still live nearby, you can honestly just leave the name out entirely.
if you’re sharing a news story, it can just be a story you found and wanted to share. you don’t have to clarify “it happened in my town,” because even if you don’t mention your town name, an easily-googled news article will.
if you’re seeing a concert or meeting a celebrity on a tour that’s stopped locally, wait until they’ve hit a few more venues before you post about it, or at the very least wait until you get home. this is honestly a smart move for any event you attend: unless you’re marketing yourself, there’s no need to advertise your location in real time.
check your selfie backgrounds for anything identifying. this includes city names on venues, school names, street signs, and house numbers.
this stuff is flexible if you no longer live in your hometown, or if your city is particularly big, but there’s STILL no reason to tie yourself to your school, your workplace, or your street. you can call it paranoid, but as someone who’s seen my friends get literal death threats over fictional characters before, the last thing I want is someone willing to act on those threats finding out where they live.
anyway. PSA over. does a kickflip or whatever
Wally Dion, Green Star Quilt, 2019 circuit boards, brass wire, copper tube
I SAW THIS IN THE PORTLAND ART MUSEUM! ITS HUGE!
it shimmers like no gemstones i've ever seen: green as malachite and emerald but shot through with opal, gold, copper. photographs can't do it justice because of how it shines, as well as the way the actual material elements have their own dimensions. you can lean in and study all the fine lines of the circuits or step back and admire how the rearranged whole forms new patterns. it's one of the most beautiful creations i've ever seen.
why can rockstar games institutionalise you for life like nikita kruschev for being autistic
He didn't steal 10 million dollars. They made that number up as a loss, they never fucking had it. Rockstar has spent more than a billion fucking dollars on GTA VI and will likely make billions more when it gets released.
Uber is a fucking shell game of a company designed to leech investor capital and output bootleg cabs.
Nvidia posted a profit in 2023 of $4.37 billion. This is like someone stealing less than a penny from me.
And they lock this kid in a prison hospital for LIFE?
Capitalism is disgusting.
Nobody should buy GTA til they free Arion Kurtaj
What with GTA VI going up for pre-order i'd just like to remind everyone that rockstar conspired with the UK government to lock an 18-year-old away for life for hacking them.
pretty sure i just lost my editing gig to ai. hate and fucking war on planet earth.
like they've already made it very clear by a) ghosting me for months and b) getting my colleagues to train their stupid new ai. like i only know about this because one of my colleagues tipped me off. i imagine they're waiting to get it working before they formally let me go and fuck that. i am literally drafting my resignation lmao
guys. there has been an update. my spy colleague has informed me that my ex-boss is backtracking. the ai was supposed to speed things up because apparently i was unavailable too often but it turns out that another colleague has been lying about me telling him i was unavailable. i have email receipts proving this never happened.
this colleague also has beef with me because his documents were always garbage and i came back with a million corrections and called him out for mass copy-pasting. so he was just skipping the editing and saying i said i couldn't do it. and i lost my job because of it.
ex-boss backtracked and ended up asking me if i'd come back not as a freelance contractor but on an actual employment basis.
i declined.
shoutout to all the people reblogging the version of this before my rejection letter. and especially shoutout to those people saying they're happy for me and that there's justice on this earth. i regret to inform you that my version of justice means choosing violence.
This is a thing of beauty

i like tumblr because occasionally i’ll be recommended a 12 year old post that depicts something so absolutely my shit that it makes me believe in art again
i hate that nonbinary people can't be, like, nonbinary.
whatever we do, we can't win. we can't be seen as actually nonbinary. people binarize us and often mock us or get aggressive or dismiss and ignore our nonbinaryhood or something else.
if we don't medically transition, we are "just cis trenders."
if we do medically transition, we are "just [binary trans] eggs."
we are "technically transmasc or transfem anyways" if we don't use these terms.
we are lumped together with binary trans men and trans women if we do use these terms. our nonbinaryhood is ignored or seen as some kind of "gender-lite."
we are aggressively pressured to disclose if we're AFAB or AMAB, TMA or TME, transmasc or transfem, "boy nonbinary" or "girl nonbinary." and if we refuse to answer, people get double mad at us and pick something for us anyways.
if we show the slightest hint of something that could be interpreted as binary gendered, we are immediately binarised.
if we put a lot of effort into looking the most ambiguous or androgynous or neutral, people still try to find something. and they become aggressive. people often EXPLODE [PT: explode] when they can't gender someone by glance.
our ways of expression are constantly mocked and ignored (like neopronouns, nonbinary-centering labels for gender and orientation, basically all things that are associated with nonbinary people).
but if we choose more typical ways of expression (for example, use "he/him" or "she/her" pronouns), people use it to ignore and dismiss our nonbinaryhood.
we just can't win, and it's upsetting.
reblog to do this w your mutuals
So this is not a plea for money. This is something that surprised me, and chatting with people on discord, they were unaware of as well.
Discovered last year I couldn’t look at my 2015 MacBook Air without it triggering nausea and migraines, and figured the screen died. Have been getting by on my phone, but concluded I really need a laptop again.
Saved up, realised I could afford a brand new MacBook Neo, and got one.
-And I couldn’t spend more than five minutes looking at the screen without massive eye strain, nausea, vertigo, and if I pushed it, I-need-to-lie-down-in-a-dark-room-for-hours migraines.
Looking up MacBook and Eyestrain explained what is going on. The liquid retina displays that Apple currently has uses Pulse Width Modulation or PWM. In order to give the screens a deeper depth of colour and contrast, PWM flickers between several hundred to thousand times a second.
And there is currently no way to turn it off. There are settings and apps to reduce it, but there is no way to stop the screen from flickering. Checked Apple forums, called Apple Support, and the time I could look at the screen kept shrinking. Got the laptop Tuesday, returned it Friday, today is Sunday and I’m still dealing with a vertigo migraine.
For MacBooks, it seems to vary on the computer model and the software it uses. In retrospect, the issue with my MacBook Air started after a major software update.
And it’s not just an Apple thing. Current Windows and Android screens do the same thing. There’s even a Reddit for people who are sensitive to PWM flickers to help find computers and screens that won’t trigger eyestrain and headaches.
So, yeah. This week has been a learning experience. But for those who are prone to headaches and migraines, this may be something to be aware of, cause I was not.

digital selfharm is real. do NOT check up on that ex-partner/ex-friend. do NOT reread those old messages/conversations that you know will hurt your feelings all over again or that will otherwise make you feel like shit. do NOT block evade to see if you’re being talked about. inhale. exhale. let it pass and you’ll be better for it.
I clicked fearing it would be Out Of Touch but, instead, it is perfectly splendid
