Today we remember the 49 lives lost and countless others forever changed on June 12, 2016, at Pulse nightclub in Orlando. What was meant to be a night of joy, music, and pride became one of unimaginable tragedy.
We honor the memory of those we lost—most of them young, queer, and Latinx—and we stand with the survivors, the families, and the community still healing.
Let this day be a reminder: queer joy is powerful, queer spaces are sacred, and love must always outshine hate.
if I wrote a dystopian novel where the corrupt evil megacorporation that controls society has a fucking smirk for a logo, my editor would tell me to use a less heavy-handed metaphor
and yet
I love this because if I were to write a literary novel in the Western cannon that described the image of an apple with a chunk bitten off, any high school English student would tell you it is a Bible reference meant to represent the source of all evil and downfall of humanity and YET
Today I discovered that melting ice makes a sound— it cracks, pops, fizzes and hisses like demonic Rice Krispies. Apparently it has to do with pressurized air bubbles and fractures from expansion, but this leads to a question which National Geographic already answered for me:
Which is similarly heavy handed but also extremely freaking metal
Come on, fellas. Let's get it together.
It’s incredible how much women do behind the scenes. I know a realtor who relies strongly on his girlfriend’s charisma, beauty and personality to gain clients.
I’ve just been reading The Glass Universe by Dava Sobel, about the Harvard women who supported the bulk of astronomy research there over the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. While many of them did receive public and academic credit as well as pay - although the university always resisted making any of them faculty until the 1950s - almost all the male astronomers featured were married to accomplished women in their own right, many of them scientists, and you can bet their husbands weren’t putting them on all their papers.
Which has bled into the modern academic world, where many people are expected to do what was essentially a two-person job (filled by male academic + wife) by themselves, or while married to someone else trying to do the same thing. The lack of acknowledgement of women’s work fucks everybody over.
#people who want a return to the mythical prior era #when women did not work #do not want women to stop working #they want them to stop getting credit and pay for it
This reminds me of how early film history, it was always the male director’s wife who did the editing of the films, because the cutting and connecting of film strips was considered a lot like sewing. Of course, anyone who knows anything about film and editing can tell you it changes how good a movie is very easily.
Don’t believe me? Look at the differences between the famous Jaws as the public’s release of it (insisted upon by the female editor) and spielberg, the male director’s version of it (missing basic suspense methods, shows the phony shark too much, etc). Same goes for almost every tarantino film. Editing makes or breaks a film and even today, you can bet your socks editing “the invisible art” was pioneered and is still pushed by women.
^^^^^^ This is so true! And once film editing began to be recognized as an actual art form, women were shoved out of the editing room so that men could be artistic or whatever.
Also Tarantino referred to his favorite editor as being kind of like his mom or something and I swear to god the more I see of him, the less I like him.
The “female editor” for Jaws was Verna Hellman Fields, who cut many other notable films, including American Graffiti along with Marcia Lucas.
Tarantino’s “favorite editor” was Sally JoAnne Menke who edited all of Tarantino’s films until she died.
Because naming and credit is important, especially when you’re talking about women not getting credit and recognition of their work as named individuals.
If you want to know more about women in early filmmaking (emphasis American) and the sociology of how different roles were divided, gendered, and re-gendered in the first decades, I highly recommend Women Filmmakers in Early Hollywood by Karen Ward Mahar.
There are a number of other books to follow that, but it’s 2am and I’m tired so hit me up later for them.
You know what happens when women type? They EDIT. It is a service they are expected to provide invisibly - not to let a mistake or imperfection show to their husband’s audience, but also not to intrude upon his sense that this is all his ideas and his labor. Wives are the unacknowledged story and script doctors, and often co-authors for so many supposedly male-authored works.
Also, I second Women Filmmakers in Early Hollywood. Mahar was my history prof for three or four courses and she is incredibly knowledgeable and engaging.

On what part of your body is your biggest scar?

Hey, can I borrow someone's executive function for a minute? I ran out and I've been putting off answering this email for two weeks because in my head it has become an insurmountable task that has taken on a life of it's own and now looms over me, shrouding every thought and action in an all consuming sense of dread.
I just got done with mine, you still need some?
that post about negotiation with hoas by threatening to set up a ham radio tower bc the fcc would back you up will not work at all even slightly but i will say that the blood feud between hoas and ham radio ppl is real & eternal. like if you want to get around hoa rules a ham radio person will probably have ideas
once again thinking about this guys “birdhouse” bc his hoa banned antennas but not “birdhouses”
One time I was helping a ham radio guy with his email and mentioned how I wanted to get into ham radio, but couldn’t because I lived in an apartment. That guy immediately rattled off like, five different ways I could set up a radio antenna inside my apartment, and seven different ways I could hide/disguise the antenna and still get a decent radio signal. Ham radio enthusiasts are a hybrid between boy scouts and wizards and I love them they play an important role in our ecosystem
Hey, did y'all see this?
I saw this when running newpipe. But wait, it gets deeper. I clicked on the details buttons and it said as of today, we have 83 days left until Google rolls out this new requirement for apps inside and outside of the google play store. If any developer disagrees with their new terms and fees, they will be blocked!
I'll share some of the info below:
Looks like they're trying to nuke the remaining privacy and freedoms we have left on the internet.
What to do?
-Get your developer friends to not comply to their new guides
- Sign the open letter on the site and take action by checking out the full resources list on their website as well!
To summarize, this is all daunting especially when you feel all alone with unfair and inhumane regulations comming out faster than improvements but we got this working together!
Share the link with your friends, family and anyone who will listen!

The really unfortunate thing about mental health progress is that sometimes you realize you've made it in the form of "wow, I haven't felt this bad in a fucking while"
On the one hand it's a bit of a pick me up in a dark place to know that this will pass because it has passed before on the other hand sometimes it isn't entirely a pleasant thought to go "wow, I used to feel like this all the time. That was pretty fucking bad. It's pretty bad right now too also."
Someday your current baseline will be the sort of thing you consider A Really Bad Day. It does get better.
ohhhh shit. target is recalling their up & up baby wipes (fragrance free & fresh cucumber scented) because they're contaminated with Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli, multiple people are reporting discoloration & infections. i just got a call about it cuz i had purchased those but i've already gone through them 😅 so no refund for me. but im fine. if you have these they're saying you need to immediately stop using them and bring them back to target for a full refund. this bacteria can cause life threatening infections in children/infants and people with compromises immune systems (ESPECIALLY cystic fibrosis!!) and i know lots of other chronically ill people follow me!!!!
Hold on i should've been more specific.
First: THIS RECALL IS NOT STATE SPECIFIC. IT IS NATIONWIDE.
here are the specific products and dates:

If you use baby wipes go check them NOW. A lot of Burkholderia bugs are antibiotic resistant so infections can be really difficult to treat.
Hi there, I'm trying to set up a ball python enclosure for a future adoption. As I find with a lot of exotic care, there's a lot of conflicting information out there. Are there any particular resources/youtubers/etc you particularly like or would recommend for snake care? I'm just asking anyone I know keeps exotics to try to collate good information.
It seems a lot harder to find good care guides online than it used to be ... I lost all my bookmarks when my computer broke down a couple years ago, and now whenever I go looking I have to wade through a lot of AI slop.
I'm also not particularly Online ... so there aren't many YouTubers that I'm familiar with. I have gotten most of my knowledge from other naturalists, zookeepers, and husbandry experts. The Natural History Society of Maryland offers really affordable herpetology lectures which I've enjoyed (there's one coming up in July that you can attend online or in-person).
BP keepers, feel free to weigh in with your own recommendations.
If you're thinking about getting a pet ball python, start here.
Highly recommend this resource.

✿\(。-_-。) “Kick his ass, baby. I got yo flower.”
Dead serious I think a lot of the current state of affairs can be attributed to the fact that for some reason we stopped punching white supremacists as the default. Brief but glorious period of time in US culture where being publicly racist was met with ass beating by more than just Black folks.
Need whites to start bringing this energy back instead of missing 20 different attempts at one person
