Could you do headcanons for Maul as a dad (adoptive or otherwise!)
headcanons: maul as a dad
word count: 0483
a/n: thank you for your request it's soo cute i hope you like it <3
finally, a worthy apprentice.
strict, but because he wants what's best for them.
likes to have them around more often than not, to keep an eye on them, make sure they're safe and under his protection.
extremely proud of their advancement in training (but really, extremely proud of everything they do).
teaches them about everything, not just combat or meditation. goes on to explain about the systems of the galaxy he visited, their peculiarities, their languages. how to pilot, how to make good tea.
sometimes doesn't know what to do. if they're going through something, crying or just having a difficult time, he won't exactly be great on comforting them, but he will try to distract them with something else to get their mind off the problem for a moment. he's always relieved when they're happy.
not really vocal about his love for them, but doesn't hide it either. soft expressions, smiles, a pat to the head to say "you're doing great".
but from time to time, he will say how proud he is before they sleep.
does whatever he can to make sure their childhood is better than his. never yells, never lays a hand on them. doesn't think of himself as an excellent father, but still goes out of his way to give his child the life he couldn't have.
and when they grow up, it's bittersweet. he misses the wonders, the learning, but seeing how amazing they turned out in his eyes, he feels, again, such pride.
starts to care for himself more. he would never want his beloved kid to end up alone in this forsaken galaxy, so he's less cruel to himself. stops constantly thinking about revenge, there's more to life than an endless cicle of danger. now he's always thinking of them.
bonus - if it had been an adoption:
honestly, couldn't bear to see someone so young all alone, with no one to care for them.
so, he decided to take matters into his own hands.
very gentle to his best attempt. smiles when they smile. doesn't even recognize this new version of himself, one so soft and careful.
a little surprised when they call him "dad" for the first time. takes a while to get used to it, but the feeling is so amazing, it adds to his will to live, and he can't help but adore it.
bonus - if it came to happen to his partner:
so, so loving towards both of them.
thinks of his home planet, where he would never get to see a child of his own grow up, and for the first time in his life, considers himself lucky.
that kid would see so much sweetness around them they would probably get sick.
"let's have another one".
he's completely melted into this new life, devoted to his family.
"family", a word he never imagined he would come to love so dearly.
We've got things like space Lacrosse (I think that's the name, I don't know sports), chicken parm, and the police is just called the police, but it all fits in perfectly
We've got crime syndicates and mafia-style revenge, and I love it
We've got every kind of main character and I love it
Side characters that I got obsessed with instantly
Everyone is some sort of awesome, powerful person, and then we've got a random kid who just wanted to play space Lacrosse
Sith!Obi-Wan put in the way that literally he is a clone of a Sith Lord of some kind(Nihilus? Revan? Bane even?) that Darth Plagueisis not spelling that shit correctly, anyway, made. It was a long time coming project he had in the back burner thsr the bane line had going for awhile but no one could get it right. Well, Plague did it but Obi-Wan is just an infant and didnât have the Kamino style cloning where aging was done more rapidly. And Palps was planning to off Plague anyway soon. Palps inherits the Sith clone that is Obi-Wan, but finds the kid is really naturally drawn to the light, no experiments on the baby are changing it. And he doesnât want to raise a baby so he gets the idea to ship Obi-Wan off to the Jedi temple with a weak bht present force bond. His idea is to have an Sith apprentice in maul who will act as his assassin, while Obi-Wan growing in the temple will get him insider info and a âapprenticeâ who he doenst have to worry about training. However, itâs still Obi-Wan, even if he occasionally has overlapping memories from the person heâs cloned from csuse the Sith is haunting his ass and giving him âwisedomâ. While the force bond between Palps and Obi-Wan is legit an estranged or deadbeat dead trying to get info out of their teenage son regardless of age over text
Outta like the last physical remnant of Darth Nihilus,
But like because Nihilus was pretty much going strong as no matter the physical matter has very little of the Sithly influence, took it with them as a ghost, and instead is much more grounded with an agressive craving for hot beverages
I imagine heâd be a bit of a spoiled brat of an apprentice compared to maul. But for how spoiled he is compared to maul his greatest failure is that Obi-wan is easily content. Very low ambition, his lack of greed is sickening

This. This right here might be Maul's biggest roadblock and the dramatic irony of it all is that he doesn't even know it
Idk if I'm right but given that understanding healthy relationships is Maul's blind spot there's a very real possibility that Devon and Rylee bonding over losing their father figures is potentially going to become a massive hindrance to his plans at some point in the future. Rylee isn't just here for the heck of it. There's a purpose to his character not only existing but also seemingly intentionally paralleling the same type of loss Devon is also experiencing. Yeah, it's a motivation for Devon to team up with Maul now, but I feel like eventually her desire to protect her friend and her desire to get back at the Empire are going to clash. Those desires may align currently, but remember, when she defied either Daki or Maul it was explicitly because she chose to protect Rylee instead of obeying the adults. That was her priority in the moment above all else. If one goal at some point gets in the way of the other, which one is she going choose? Maul expects her to automatically choose the goal that aligns with his. But is he right or is that too presumptuous on his part?
What Maul fails to understand is that children - especially teenagers - are not merely extensions of adults. This is because he was never taught any different, which yes is tragic, but he's continuing the cycle Palpatine imposed on him. Neither Devon nor Ezra is an individual person to him - they're reflections of his own self. So he mistakenly assumes they're going to behave exactly like him. Feel the same feelings, make the same decisions. But while they're similar, they're not the same, and we've already seen that individuality win once when Ezra chooses to abandon his temporary brush with the Dark Side.
These kids are not Maul's mini-mes no matter how much he thinks they are, and if the story follows the pattern of "Maul always screws up because he doesn't know how actual relationships work" I could see this happening again when Devon starts acting like literally any teenage girl with a mind of her own and they eventually butt heads. Or, in chronological time, for the first time before he tries it again with Ezra and still fails because Ezra's love for Kanan wins out over his anger. Regardless of exactly how this story ends, it's highly likely it's not going to go the way Maul plans. One does not simply mold a teenager with an already well-established personality into whatever you want them to be. Maul honey I know you're trauma-parenting but I need you to understand that this is not how it works. She's going to turn on you at some point, like every kid does who has a parental figure with an enmeshment problem
I still really love the idea that Maul, for all the evil he is, is crucially blind when it comes to healthy development, because he was never shown a hint of something remotely healthy during his own development, to the point that he accidentally provides it to the apprentices he mentors. He's trying to be the mentor he believes he should have had to these youths he's projecting himself on to, and that accidentally leads his apprentices back to the light side of the force. I like the idea that his mentorships follow the pattern of: 1) finding a force sensitive youth, 2) using conventional Sith trickery to get them to be his apprentice, 3) train them properly in the ways of the force so they can get stronger, 4) oopsie woopsie turns out studying the balance of all things caused inner balance, 5) scare the apprentice straight by being genuinely an evil person, 6) get distracted by revenge, 7) apprentice is flees, 8) start over. Or what I like to call "How to Fail at Being a Sith Lord in 10 Steps or Less"
like a Star Wars version of that Sungwon skit
In all seriousness, the universe literally demands he fail in anything that could truly further his goals. So I genuinely, not just for the bit, like the idea that even in training an apprentice he is cosmically fated to cause his own failure again and again and again. Cursed to forever be a tool and never a master.
I love this analysis. Especially #4 𤣠I know a lot of people think Devon is going to go fully Dark because the story is definitely meant to be a tragedy (and also the Darth Talon allegations), but I don't think this is meant to be Devon's tragedy as much as it's supposed to be Maul's. We've seen the pattern you described already, and given that Ezra was his second attempt at this, to me the most logical assumption is that he failed miserably with Devon beforehand and learned nothing from the experience. It's his show after all. That would fit well with the whole "doomed to fail" theme, and I feel like his failure is primarily rooted in that inability to learn from the mistakes of the past. Not just his mistakes, but everybody else's too. Despite never meeting him, he's weirdly Luke's perfect foil in that he is similarly positioned to be a generational trauma cycle-breaker and actually could be, yet does everything to continue the cycle instead of breaking it because of his blind spots
It also positions him as Obi Won's perfect parallel because just like Obi Won with Anakin, he is fated to fail at training a student who he ends up driving into the opposing side of the force through his efforts to keep them. But unlike Obi Won, he is a Sith and thus cannot learn from his mistakes. Instead of being able to try again with another student and successfully inoculating them against the seduction of the opposing side (like Obi Won achieves with Luke), Maul runs through a series of apprentices who not only never stay, but end up growing in the ways he can't.
It also positions him as a foil to Palpatine, who successfully trains a series of Sith lords to do his bidding (until Luke breaks the cycle). If you pay attention, Palpatine also successfully trains a series of Sith Lords who are crucially crippled in their training in some way so they can always be undermined or replaced. Maul instead accidentally training light side users because he is not trying to cripple their progress would be the Force's will establishing balance. I believe Palpatine picked Maul (who even as a child appears to be as in tune with the force as Palpatine if not more so) to train into a perfect tool of the dark side, knowing it would trap Maul by its nature, as a way to play the cosmic forces to avoid Maul's fate. Palpatine, in my head cannon, is his own generational break in that he reshaped the Sith religious order into something that would bring him personal power and so manipulates the balance such that even if he should fail, he can only fail upwards. The Force balances all things, and so the master who cannot fail is counter weighted by the tool who cannot win. Only when Maul flirts with the light side does Maul achieve something like progress, but he is cursed to put a stick in the spokes of his proverbial bike and relapse into the dark side all over again. In that way Maul is "not as evil as the other evil guys" as the writers and voice actors have indicated, because he's also a balancing force in the narrative, he just doesn't know it.
I honestly think that's why being eventually killed by Obi Won is the only way for Maul to find peace.
As i suspected, this underlying seed of self-hatred when he fails. If i could connect this to canon, i suspect by the clone wars his ego was inflated and his blame would shift away from himself even more as a maladaptive coping mechanism because addressing his own failiure, by now, would be too painful, would mean an ultimate self-punishment.
An interesting peek into his twisted little mind
I really do wonder how he'd feel to read these journals post-lotho minor. Would he acknowlege how he's changed? Justify it?
Don't be surprised if "sorry cretin, i'm not impressed" makes its way into my lexicon. He doesn't say this to them. he just writes in his journal after the fact. you monster energy drinking edgelord you. tumblr esque phrase
Freaky ass dude
I mean at least he's laughing
Something that echoes through the whole story. It's haunting. The narrative of him ignoring his own misery until he can't anymore, only handling it by creating more of his own misery. A cycle he was raised in, a cycle he can't escape(don't you love my tonal whiplash)
The sith brainwashing is a visceral read.
So, to my understanding, some abusers cut you down because they think they can challenge yo to do better. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. When it works, you're in a stronger mind prison of your abuser.
This. This is why he begs for mercy on Mandalore.
Metal as fuck, actually
Maul is a great character in that he sets up how evil sidious truly is. This was even carried into the clone wars show.
rest in peace darth maul, eater of words
Such a cold world for an injured child. How he turns off his emotions as a means to cope with his torture.
Do you think he smells bad by duel of the fates
WHAT THE FUCK???? DO NOT YEET THE CHILD!!!
He justifies it, saying it aids in his power. Power is the only thing he has to cling to. The dark side is the wire mother, if you will.
Hypocrite that you are--
It's exhaustion, maul. Mend your fucking leg already
I'm sure it'll come to you in a vision of some kind over 10 years later
I should not be so turned on by his nature
This is where the sith teachings fall short. TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
why is this a funny visual to me
Emotional wounds can have more lasting damage than physical. "The chains are the easy part. It's what goes on in here that's hard."
this is stupid but i couldn't get this image out of my head. au below
here's the context: Cal gets involved in some criminal bullshit on Bracca, uses it to leave, then is recruited by the Crimson Dawn. eventually people notice he's too good at his job, and Dryden somehow finds out Cal's a Jedi. he tries to blackmail or sell out Cal, doesn't matter, the point is that Cal ends up killing him. Maul obviously finds out and is like finally, an apprentice! anyway now you're a crime lord Jedi boy
On a somewhat related note, I do wonder how Maul would behave if someone more powerful than him who was KIND tried to befriend him. Like, sure heâd probably be pretty darn hostile for a while, but if it was someone who was too powerful for him to want to challenge them immediately, I do wonder how heâd react to true kindness once his hostility lessened a little bit.

Yesss!! The Wing AU! Which is really just a long document with the various clones and Jedi/Sith what their wings would look like.
I'm going to post it as it is because the bullet point works, and this is the "baseline" part of the winged universe. I might have several stories stem from it, because... I just really love wings and I feel like I could go in several directions. So here it is!
There are only two beings in the galaxy with wings: those who are Force-sensitive, and the clones engineered by the Kaminoans
The wings of a child will be drab until they molt in maturity, bringing in their true colors
Touching another personâs wings without permission is disrespectful and invasive, while trusting someone enough to allow them to preen their wings is a sign of trust and closeness
The clones were engineered with wings to keep up with the Jedi during the war, though this has brought its own controversy with senators questioning if engineering wings is a step too far in cloning technology, as wings are supposed to be sacred (but the Chancellor claims this is a sign they are on the side of righteousness, though in reality he wants the clone troopers to have wings to keep up with the Jedi when he orders their execution)
Yoda has grey wings, Dooku has elegant black wings, and Darth Sidious has no wings at all (he removed them at an early age to hide his affinity for the Force, and he almost abhors the idea of them), Maulâs wings are black with red tips, and Ventress has wings of white with black tips
Anakin has beautiful golden-brown wings, Obi-Wan has soft sandstone-colored wings, and Ahsoka has white wings with blue stripes
Cad Bane has wings of blue variation, light blue at the base and darker at the tips, though they are so ragged from being unpreened and kept in bindings against his back that they can only glide, not fly, until they are restored with care and practice (which is unlikely since he always keeps them hidden and no one knows he even has them)
Clones Wings:
Hunter has dark grey wings, the same color as his eyes, and the feathers are broader and longer than a typical clonesâ (his brothers used to joke that his missing height went into his wingspan)
Crosshair has silvery white wings that match his hair, and theyâre especially soft around the shoulders of the wings, almost downy, but if anyone tries to touch them, theyâll get pummeled for it. Not with his handsâCrosshair has learned how to âpunchâ with his wings with uncanny accuracy, and other troopers learned long ago to steer clear of them
Wrecker has reddish-brown wings that have golden highlights in the sun, though he had to have cybernetic feathers and muscles implanted into his left wing after the explosion that took his eye
Techâs wings are golden-brown, and they are prone to being unkempt much like his living space, the clone too distracted with his work to care for them, and if it wasnât for his brothers they would be nearly unusable (which would be a shame, because he flies like a mynock on fire)
Echo used to have grey speckled wings that complimented Fivesâ grey and white wings, but once he was captured, the Separatists cut them off. After he was rescued, Rex and Cody made sure there were funds to build him advanced mechanical wings so he could fly again
Omega has golden-white wings, and the Batch had to teach her how to fly because the Kaminoans didnât show her and probably never would have
Crosshair would be the one to preen Hunterâs wings after a battle, and Hunter would preen his (Crosshair would let Wrecker preen his wings but no matter how hard he tries, Crosshairâs too sensitive, and Hunter is the only one with a light enough touch to do it)
Tech doesnât really care who preens his wings out of the Batch, just as long as they donât screw up and pull out any feathers, and heâs more than happy to let Wrecker do it since the big clone loves preening his brotherâs feathers
If a flyer goes through a traumatic event, their feathers will molt and grow back a different color: this is what happens to the clones after Order 66, they lose their individuality/feathers, and grow all white wings to match their bleached armor (Crosshair loses his silvery feathers and they grow back in a much darker shade, showing heâs not completely under their control and is suffering for it)
There are only a few Imperial clones that donât grow plain white feathers, but instead, they grow in pure black. The ones with black wings are selected to be Death Troopers
Crosshairâs new wings are not technically black, theyâre more of a dark grey, and coincidentally, the same shade as Hunterâs wings
For clones who start to fight their chips, or their chips start to fail, they gradually shed their feathers and start growing them back with color. Such as Howzer, who started to grow back his teal-tipped feathers, and he had to bleach his wings so his superiors wouldnât find out
The new TK troopers are given mechanical wings, but they are far inferior to the natural wings that clones are engineered with, but mechanical wings are cheaper than biological ones, and the clone troopers that remain are taken to Tantiss for experimentation
Obi-Wan:Â âChancellor Palpatine, Sith Lords are our speciality!â
Ahsoka Tano, fifty thousand light years away and running for her life through a burning landscape as a grinning Sith Lord chases her:Â Â âAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!â
Is the Eleventh Brother being called upon to chaperone Marrok? It seems like Eleventh Brother might be slightly older. The thought- if an Inquisitor isn't performing well and Vader is away, the Emperor sends Eleventh Brother to monitor the "kids" makes me giggle. Poor Maul wants an apprentice and Eleventh Brother shows up with Marrok like a disappointed coach. "The fuck you mean I can't have an apprentice and this guy gets called upon to babysit" runs through Maul's mind. The last people you want to watch your kids. Babysitter Club.... with Eleventh Brother just looming there hahaha.
random very random, do you think Crow and Marrok communicate through the force somehow or their bond is just really strong from the way the were in Shadow Lord also whatâd you think of Marrok having force echo
hi hii lovely!
YES! I believe theyâre the type to communicate silently whether it be by body language, or the force. I head canon that theyâve known each other for a huge portion of their lives(through training, missions, etc) and that theyâve learned almost everything about each other. I also believe that Marrokâs force echo definitely came in handy when getting to know Crow. Which made their bond grow to what weâve seen. We also see they work hand in hand with each other. Their fighting is smooth and almost in sync in a way.
Force echo or Psychometry is such a cool concept to me and Iâm super happy we got to see someone with that skill! I feel that it suits Marrokâs character. Iâd love to see what his upbringing was like because from the research Iâve done, one is born with the skill but it doesnât always manifest right away. I vaguely remember someone developing it as an early teen. I like that this particular skill isnât attainable, you canât just learn it.

âPerhaps the worst thing for Maul is actually achieving his goals.â
Is Maul fascinating because of his resilienceâ or because of the unfairness he perpetually endures? The ancient myth the Shadow Lord creative team repeatedly invokes as a comparison is Sisyphus, who lives forever but is doomed to push the same rock up a hill over and over and over again. Survivors are appealing, yes. But we are also transfixed by people who are their own worst enemies.
"Maul is afraid, and power is the only way that he knows to really overcome this fear of his. This fear of being insignificant, of being forgotten, of being a nothing" Filoni says.
[Maul] needs more than one lesson, and he's going to get more than one lesson. "He's this kind of tragic figure who is constantly doomed to repeat his mistakes," says Matt Michnovetz, the head writer and executive producer of Maul: Shadow Lord. "We have some empathy for him, but he's a bad figure. His moral judgment is not the best. He's determined to achieve his goals through whatever means necessary: manipulation, devious tactics, cruelty in some cases. But he's a survivor. You got to hand it to him."
âIf you took something that gives you power, it makes you feel better than somebody else, but it also makes you feel bad because somewhere, inherently, you know itâs wrong, what you did,â Filoni adds. âSo in order to quash that feeling of remorse, you have to do it again. And again, to get the fix of thriving and gaining power and suppressing other people. And it becomes this way of beingâ and thatâs the Dark Side of the Force.â
This is what makes Maul like Sisyphusâ forever rolling his boulder uphill and sometimes being crushed by it as it rolls back. The endless possibilities there mean Filoni and company still have many more stories left to tell about him.
Exclusive: Why Darth Maul Will Never Die, by Anthony Breznican, Esquire.com
I think in any Jedi!Maul scenario where he grew up in the temple his whole life, it would be very very funny if he kept the evil Sam Witwer voice and cadence and delivery when he talked. Good guy with terminal mellifluous bad guy voice. He doesnât hear it and canât help it, everything he says sounds suspicious by default and constantly makes people do double takes. Genuinely a good person but sounds like the most classic evil mustache twirler of all time
