Too bad the prophet Cassandra never met Odysseus
They say if she made a prophecy Nobody would believe her
I’ve gotta say, that is exactly the kind of stupid thing that probably would circumvent a curse.
Cassandra: YOU ARE ALL GOING TO REGRET THIS SO MUCH YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW.
Odysseus: Regret it why?
Cassandra: You won’t believe me if I tell you. If I prophecy, nobody believes me. That is my curse.
Odysseus: … I’m Nobody. Fill me in.
*A couple of months later*
Odysseus: HELLO PENELOPE, I AM HERE PRECISELY ON TIME AND NOT YEARS LATE incidentally I rescued and adopted a Trojan seer while I was away, she’s great, got me home really fast, Cassandra this is your new mother who’s not going to treat you like shit.
Penelope: … I’m going to need more details, but okay, sure.
Cassandra: *in tears* I love you, new family.
Cassandra: Penelope, I’ve had another vision.
Penelope, sighs: Go tell your father.
the original? on my dash?
i know this has been discussed ad nauseam here but the way being elevated to sainthood is a dehumanizing process and the way extreme trauma alienates you from others are… similar. and my boy rocky gets both simultaneously. you saved us all! you’re so high above us! you’re so so high above us
I love how you draw Logan and Kurt, could we get some more of them cuddling? There’s a criminally low amount of art for them <333
I'm always down to doodle our boys cuddling

alicent hightower character of all time to me because even when shes doing fuck all in harrenhal i think she so effectively captures this really specific and realistic experience of motherhood that isnt just real and unexplored so thoroughly in fiction but also thematically fitting to the larger story. and its where she doesnt necessarily hate her children or even truly neglect them but rather she is unable to see them as real human beings independent from her and her experience of the world and all of her mistreatment of them stems from that core. they cannot be aegon and aemond and helaena to her they are always Targaryens with a capital T, they are always viserys, they are always rhaenyra trampling duty and sacrifice under her pretty foot, they are always her father telling her to wear her mother's dress and go to the kings chambers, they are always the fear she felt the first time she did so, they are always the blood on her cuticles and most importantly they are always her. they cannot be both real people and all of these things, so they become just all of these things. she has now said this verbatim to helaena ("what's the difference?") but even back in season 1 for example when she slaps aegon she says that he should have thought about the way his behavior reflected back on her. of course this is a very parent-ly thing to say but for alicent its effectively literal. her children are a defining feature of hers no different and no more separate from her than her auburn hair. helaena even frames her relationship to her unborn fetus in the same language, "it's mine". it's all she has that is hers. for alicent it was no different. if her children are the reason for her existence and the source of all of her value to society then of course she can see them as nothing more than an extension of her. she treats them as violently as she treats herself. she hates them the way she hates herself. her disregard for their life in this context is unsurprising. they are literally a limb of hers that hurts and aches and makes her limp and she doesnt hesitate to cut it off when she gets the chance. "whats the difference?" there literally is none
you also have to understand the driftmark confrontation in this context btw. she didnt genuinely love and cherish aemond as a boy and then change her mind when he grew up and one day suddenly became willing to kill him. she always saw him (and the others) as an extension of herself. the assault on his eye is an assault on her. its a slap in the face to her. her children are the physical embodiment of a sacrifice she did not willingly make and of all of her suffering and resentment because they are all borne of a child marriage she was forced into. she was imprisoned in a castle and made to squeeze out heirs at age 15 by a rotting corpse of a middle aged man while rhaenyra did whatever and whomever she wanted. she chose the fathers of all her children and the fake-fathers too. for rhaenyra's bastard love-children to maim one of alicent's unwanted children by viserys that she dutifully bore because she was told she had to, and for viserys to side with rhaenyra STILL.... is spitting on the face of this sacrifice of her body and freedom that rhaenyra has always scorned and that alicent has always resented but been powerless to escape. which isnt to say she never felt any affection for her children because i think she did and still does at some points, but the point of the scene at driftmark is not to show us that alicent loves aemond and would seek revenge for him. it is to show us alicent's resentment of the life she was forced into. her children ARE the life she was forced into. in season 2 when she fucks off into the forest alone and has a metaphorical baptismal rebirth it immediately precedes her offer of her sons lives to rhaenyra and in their confrontation tells us all of this: "i am at last myself, with no ambition greater to walk where i please and to breathe the open air. to die unremarked and unnoticed and be free."
walking outside and swimming in a lake doesnt imbue alicent with Bad Mom Son Hater Holy Water and make her suddenly switch up and be willing to kill her sons, it frees her from her attachment to them as an extension of herself and a manifestation of the injustices done to her. it is only after leaving them behind that she becomes "at last, herself" and it is as herself that she becomes willing to sacrifice them. the only "self" that remains to alicent after she has cast off this attachment to her perceived duty is someone that exists outside of (or perhaps, predates) the role of Queen Mother; she can no longer be a mother to two royal targaryen sons. helaena is an exception in alicents eyes because she is not implicated in her assigned political duty of producing male targaryen heirs. she exists outside of the "endless plotting and striving" that alicent seeks to be free of while her sons are the core of it. helaena does not trap alicent the way her sons do, of no fault of their own other than the reality of their birth, and so helaena does not so fully embody the sacrifice and suffering that festered such resentment in alicent the way aegon and aemond did. instead of being a human embodiment of her suffering, helaena and jaheara are a time machine, a second chance, they are not an extension of alicent as the manifestation of the greatest injustice done to her in her life but rather as what could have been if her mother had been there to save her from becoming what she now is.
Fitzjames’ voice drops carefully, measuring his words [...] There is a sense here that Fitzjames speaks of something more than the relationship between Franklin and Crozier. There’s a touch of the personal here.
