Happy Disability Pride Month!
To commemorate, I thought I'd introduce a new character I've been working on for Hub of the World, Kennr Axeweilder:
Kennr is a dwarven potion brewer, who travels the world in search of rare and exotic ingredients. She is a great believer in science, by which she means adding any and everything to the cauldron until something happens, which is usually some kind of explosion (but as long as you write up the experiment afterwards, it's still science).
Kennr is confined to a wheelchair, and has been her entire life, but she doesn't let that slow down her search for the ultimate potion, the vaunted Omegalixir... Oh, and yes, she gets a Pride swimsuit, too:
Oh, and she has no idea why people always assume that she has an axe. Axeweilder is just a very common dwarven family name.
As an aside, I have been looking into the use of "dwarf" as a fantasy species, and if this is something appropriate to use given the existence of real-world little people. Unfortunately, most of what I've been able to find is just taller people discussing it without any real input from little people themselves, and most of what I have been able to find is about actors being locked into stereotypical roles (or locked out of other roles entirely) due to their size. I'll definitely look into it more, but if anybody has any advice or good places to read up about the issue, please do let me know.
