Emily Dickinson, in a note to Susan Gilbert Dickinson, quotes Antony and Cleopatra, casting them as the titular star-crossed lovers, respectively, to reaffirm that “thou [Susan] knew’st” of not only of her Antony-like love and devotion, but also the subtext of Emily’s own unspoken (at least in this one note) feelings, which replace Antony’s declarations with a much more personal message which Emily trusts that Susan knows without Emily ever having to say or write it.
