Kurt Cobain Will Have His Revenge on the Straights
Had a video call with my brother Chuck the other day.Ā Things got heavy:
KATE: Was Kurt Cobain a trans woman?
CHUCK: What?
Kurt Cobain.Ā Rock musician.Ā He was in a band called Nirvana.
Iām familiar with him, yes.
Was he a trans woman?
Um.Ā No?
OK.Ā Why not?
I mean, he wasnāt.Ā Itās like asking why he wasnāt an astronaut.
He wasnāt an astronaut because he never went to space.Ā Why wasnāt he a trans woman?
Because he didnāt transition.Ā I mean, he didnāt ever say he was a woman, didnāt ever say he was trans.Ā So no.Ā Kurt Cobain wasnāt a trans woman.
So someone is trans if they say theyāre trans.Ā Self-determination.
Thatās what youāve told me.Ā Is that wrong?
No, thatās right.Ā We know ourselves better than anybody else can know us.Ā If we say weāre trans, nobody can say we arenāt.
And Kurt Cobain never said he was trans.
So was I trans in 1994?
I donāt know, were you?
Yes, but if youād asked me in 1994, I would have told you ānoā.
So if I tell you Iām trans, Iām transā¦
Right.
But if I tell you Iām cis, I might still be trans?
If you tell me youāre cis, I believe you.
Thatās not the same thing as āIām cisā.
Thatās a really good point.Ā This is sort of what some queer people are getting at when they say āgender is a constructā.
Come again?
Well, youāre cisgender, right?
As far as I know, yes.
Aha.
Hmmm?
You hedged.Ā āAs far as I knowā isnāt the same thing as āyesā.Ā āAs far as I knowā opens up the possibility that you could be trans and not know it.
It doesnāt seem terribly likely.
Thatās an interesting statement.Ā Early on in transition one of the biggest problems I had was dealing with the sheer unlikelihood of my being trans.Ā I mean, I knew trans people existed.Ā I knew somebody had to be trans.Ā I just couldnāt wrap my head around the idea that it would be me.
Do you think this is why youāre on this whole āKurt Cobain was a trans womanā kick?
Hey now, Iām just asking questions.Ā You know.Ā Like J.K. Rowling is ājust asking questionsā.
Kate, you are literally wearing a T-shirt that says āKURT COBAIN WAS A TRANS WOMANā on it right now.
Am I?Ā Oh, shit.Ā I thought I was wearing my āSkip school, take hormones, kill Godā T-shirt.Ā To your question, though - yeah, I do think thatās part of it.Ā Honestly, the hardest thing about growing up trans was believing that nobody in the world had ever experienced what I was experiencing.Ā I didnāt have any role models.Ā I didnāt wonder if I was the only one.Ā I was convinced of it.
So being able to say that this incredibly gifted songwriter, the voice of a generation, was a trans woman like youā¦
I need someone like that.Ā I need to not be the first of my kind.
Of course youāre not the first trans woman.
No, but before a couple of years ago almost every trans woman would tell you they always knew, unquestionably and innately, that they were women.
So itās not just about him being trans, but specifically his being a trans woman who didnāt know he was a trans woman.
An egg.Ā Right.
Why Kurt Cobain, anyway?Ā Whatās so special about him that youāre trying to induct him into the Egg Hall of Fame?
He knew things.Ā Things cis guys donāt know.Ā Things I didnāt know until after I started transition.Ā He understood women, what weāre like, what we experience.Ā āPennyroyal Teaā.Ā āRape Meā.Ā I just have a hard time thinking of a cis man who could write songs like that.
It wouldnāt be the only way in which he was exceptional.
True.Ā Ahhh.Ā I donāt know.Ā I mean, I know, I can give you all the reasons, but thereās something in his eyes.
Something in his eyes.
All the pictures of him.Ā No matter what heās doing.Ā If heās grinning, or sad, whatever heās doing, you can see something trapped there.Ā Trapped and in pain, wanting to get out but not quite knowing how.
Huh.Ā You, uh, know that what youāre doing is pretty much the textbook definition of projection, right?
Maybe.Ā Chuck, do you think Iām happier?
Since you transitioned?
Yeah.
Of course.Ā Absolutely.Ā Night and day.
Everyone says that, and honestly, I see it.Ā Even in pictures, you know?Ā I see it.Ā Youāve seen some of my transition timelines, right?
You do look really different.
Itās not just me.Ā Every single person who transitions looks like that.Ā We look so much happier, so much more alive, so much more us.Ā I donāt understand how anybody can hate us.
I donāt get it either, Kate.
And when I look at any timelines, I look at the before photos⦠and I see something in their eyes.Ā Transmasc, transfem, doesnāt matter.Ā Thereās something trapped wanting to get out.Ā Every picture Iāve ever seen of Kurt Cobain looks like the ābeforeā picture on a transition timeline.Ā Itās just that with him, there arenāt any after pictures.
And itās not just the eyes, either.Ā The way he dressed, the whole āgrunge lookā.Ā Itās just literally egg fashion.Ā We dress with total disregard for our appearance or how we look because no matter what we do itās wrong.
āEgg fashionā, egg this, egg that⦠isnāt it a little bit anachronistic, judging him by 2022 standards, 2022 values?
Is it?Ā Chuck, I was alive in 1994.Ā I was an 18 year old egg.Ā I know what that feels like.Ā I know what that looks like.Ā I lived that.Ā Why didnāt I come out as trans in 1994?Ā Because I didnāt have the opportunity.Ā Because self-determination needs to be informed, and none of us were.Ā None of us.Ā Look.Ā You know what he said to Melody Maker in 1991?Ā āI knew I was different. I thought that I might be gay or something because I couldn't identify with any of the guys at all.āĀ Thatās what he said.
Holy shit.Ā Really?
Really.Ā September 14, 1991.
Hold on, let me look that up.Ā Oh, yeah, I see it.Ā Look, if you look at the full quote heās just saying heās not a jock.Ā Like he didnāt fit in with the jocks.Ā
Well, what about the dresses?
What dresses?
Kurt Cobain wore a lot of dresses.Ā Like, a lot, both onstage and off.Ā On MTV in 1991, he said āItās āHeadbangerās Ballā so I thought Iād wear a gown.āĀ He said in a 1993 interview, āI personally like to wear dresses.Ā I wear them around the house sometimes.āĀ This is not some shameful secret he kept hidden from the world.Ā He was open about this.Ā He was proud about this.
Yeah, but⦠itās just clothes.
Except itās not just clothes.Ā Listen to his songs.Ā Listen to his lyrics.Ā āShould have been a sonā.Ā āIām a lady, can you save me?āĀ āEveryone is gay.āĀ The original lyrics to āAll Apologiesā from his journals ā āBoys write songs for girls.Ā Let me grow some breasts.ā
I mean theyāre song lyrics.Ā There are all kinds of ways to interpret song lyrics.
Sure.Ā All kinds of ways.Ā You ever read Michael Azerradās biography of Cobain, Come As You Are?
Nope.
Azerrad spent weeks talking to Cobain.Ā He was Cobainās biographer, but also his friend.Ā And he has his own interpretation of the lyrics.Ā For instance, Azerrad talks about all the lyrics about guns, and to me, now, I look at that, and I think of how he died, but Azerrad, when Kurt was alive, he looked at it another way.Ā He thought itās about dicks.Ā āTo paraphrase Dr. Freud,ā he says, āsometimes a gun is just a gun.Ā But not this time.āĀ He talks about āCome As You Areā, where Kurt keeps singing āI swear I donāt have a gun.āĀ Thatās not my interpretation.Ā Thatās never been my interpretation.Ā Thatās what this cis man says.Ā More than one cis man.Ā Kurt says Dave Grohlās dad, he said the same thing.Ā Yeah.Ā There are all kinds of ways to interpret lyrics.
āBy this time,ā Azerrad wrote, āone begins to wonder how Kurt rationalizes being a man at all.Ā His first response is revealing.Ā āI donāt know,ā he says.Ā āCastration.āāĀ I donāt wonder how Kurt rationalizes being a man.Ā I rationalized ābeing a manā in all kinds of ways.Ā What strikes me is that he needed to rationalize being a man.Ā Had to come up with some kind of excuse.Ā It just strikes me kind of funny.
Kurtās songs have meanings.Ā Ā The lyrics to āIn Bloomā, Kurt was pretty explicit about that.Ā The lyrics he wrote have meanings.Ā āHeart-Shaped Boxā.Ā You know what that refers to?Ā When Courtney Love was flirting with Kurt, Michael Azerrad says in Come As You Are, āShe gave Dave (Grohl) a package to give to Kurt ā little sea shells and miniature teacups and a tiny doll, all packed into a small heart-shaped box.āĀ A tiny doll locked away inside a box shaped like a heart.Ā That was what I felt like before I came out.Ā A tiny phantom doll.Ā Kurt and Courtney first kissed after a show at the Cabaret Metro in Chicago.Ā Rumor was that they fucked against the bar, but they denied it.Ā What actually happened, Azerrad says, is that āCourtney had a bag of lingerie with her for some reason and Kurt ended up modeling the contents.āĀ And then they went to Kurtās hotel room and they fucked.
Youāre making it soundā¦
Maybe it was.Ā Because you look at that and you think that if it was like that, it was perverted and wrong, because thatās what you were told, that itās a sick fetish thing, and I look at it and it isnāt.Ā To me, thatās normal.Ā That Kurt Cobain was sexually aroused while wearing Courtney Loveās lingerie, thatās normal.
Kate, he was a punk!Ā He hated jocks, and wearing a dress pissed off jocks, so he wore dresses.Ā He talked about wanting to wear a dress and piss on a redneck A&R manās desk!Ā You think that was some kind of sex thing?
Sexuality is part of being a woman.Ā Part.Ā Rage ā and Kurt Cobain had a lot of rage inside him ā thatās another part.Ā Am I interpreting, am I looking at things from my perspective as a trans woman?Ā Yes, certainly, just like youāre interpreting, looking at it from your perspective as a cis man.Ā When cis people interpret things, their conclusion is never āthey were transā.Ā Never.
Ed Wood wasnāt a trans woman.Ā He was just a transvestite.Ā He was a man.
Pete Burns from Dead or Alive wasnāt a trans woman.Ā Sure, he got all sorts of feminizing surgeries, but he never said he was a woman.Ā Man.
Prince Nelson adopted a female persona, feminized his voice, and recorded a song about wanting to be a woman's girlfriend, but he was also a Christian and believed that being queer was wicked and sinful, and that's the identity of his we need to respect.Ā Man.
Richard Wright, who wrote the Phish song āHalleyās Cometā, spent most of the 1980s telling everyone he knew he was a transsexual lesbian named Nancy, but after being consistently treated like shit changed his mind about that, so none of that counts for anything.Ā Man.
Dave Carter was on HRT when he died, but he was just questioning.Ā He didnāt tell anybody for sure that he was a woman.Ā Man.
Quentin Crisp said just before he died that if he was younger, he absolutely would have transitioned, but wanting to transition isnāt the same as actually transitioning.Ā Man.
All men.Ā Always, always men, whatever they do, whatever they say.Ā I know how that works.Ā I was told all these same things about myself for decades, all these same reasons, and now, I donāt know, I guess people will make a personal exception for me, but for everybody else, the same old assumptions, the same old arguments, they still apply.Ā Theyāre still legitimate.
I thought we were talking about Kurt Cobain.
And the only way to do that is to talk about him in isolation.Ā Thereās no larger context to consider, no bigger picture.Ā I canāt really know.Ā I canāt really judge.
I mean, everybody else does.Ā I guess I canāt tell you not to.Ā But all of this circumstantial evidence, all of the dresses and the lyrics that you I guess know the real meaning of ā none of that makes him a girl.
Sure.Ā And nothing can make him a girl.Ā Because heās dead.Ā Because he killed himself.
Oh, here we go.Ā After thirty years and countless speculation, you have at last uncovered the real reason Kurt Cobain killed himself ā gender dysphoria.Ā Do you have a book deal yet?
Working on it.Ā And yes, people say a lot of stupid things about Cobainās death, like itās this big shock that this guy who hated himself and wanted to die killed himself.
Right. Ā He was pretty well-known for being a heroin addict, which isnāt exactly something that improves oneās quality of life.
Sure, but why did he start heroin?
I donāt know.Ā Why does anybody start heroin?
To help him cope with his eating disorder.
Wait, what?Ā Eating disorder?
You donāt know about that?Ā He had stomach problems, for a long, long time.Ā He could only eat certain kinds of food, certain kinds of food that wouldnāt make his stomach hurt.Ā Doctors looked but they could never find any organic cause for it.Ā Nobody took it seriously.Ā So he self-medicated with heroin.Ā āIt was my choice,ā he told Azerrad.Ā āI donāt regret it at all because it was such a relief from not having stomach pain every day.āĀ I know, though.Ā Lots of cis guys have eating disorders.Ā Doesnāt mean anything.
Kate thereās a lot of interpreting going on here.
Yeah, I guess there is.Ā Is that necessarily a bad thing, though?Ā Is that necessarily wrong?Ā Like.Ā Youāve seen The Matrix, right?
Only the first one.
Yeah, thatās fine.Ā So you know how important The Matrix is to a lot of trans women, right?
Yes, but Iām not really sure why.Ā Just seems like a retelling of Platoās āAllegory of the Caveā with extra fight scenes.
Itās pretty trans, though, right?
Clearly.Ā It was directed by two trans women.
And trans women who watch it ā eggs or otherwise ā find their own lives and experiences reflected in it in ways that cis people, like you, donāt.
I guess, but the fact that it was actually made by two trans women carries a little more weight with me.
OK, but what if the Wachowskis had died in 2000?Ā In, like⦠a car crash or something?Ā Does that mean The Matrix isnāt a trans film?
Well, no, because itās still a film made by two trans women.
A film made by two trans women that speaks to the trans experience, and that is recognized by living trans women as speaking specifically to the trans experience.Ā The only difference is that, in this scenario, nobody knows the Wachowski Sisters are trans women.Ā And we canāt prove it.Ā We canāt possibly prove it, and nobody is going to just believe us when we say itās a trans movie, that the Wachowskis were trans women, because they didnāt say it, they didnāt say the special magic words.Ā Self-determination.Ā You know what self-determination meant to Kurt Cobain?Ā I remember seeing Courtney Love on television reading his note, I remember her interrupting to say that he was an asshole, that what he was saying was bullshit.Ā She didnāt respect his self-determination.
Umā¦
āPennyroyal Teaā.Ā Cobain told Azerrad āIt's a cleansing theme where Iām trying to get all my bad evil spirits out of me and drinking Pennyroyal tea would cleanse that away.āĀ Pennyroyal is an abortifacient ā but, Azerrad notes, only in lethal doses.Ā
Hell, not just that song.Ā The whole album.Ā In Utero.Ā The collage on the back cover, the one Cobain described to Azerrad as āSex and woman and In Utero and vaginas and birth and death".Ā The occult symbols surrounding it, taken from Barbara G. Walkerās The Woman's Dictionary of Symbols and Sacred Objects1.Ā There was something inside Kurt Cobain, something inside him waiting to be born, but he was told, over and over, that it was a monster, so he killed it, the only way he could.Ā By killing himself.
That could have been me.Ā That could so easily have been me.Ā I was told all the same things he was.Ā We all were.Ā When I was 27?Ā When I was 27, I was addicted to benzos, benzos they prescribed me because I was trying to bury, trying to kill this thing, this thing I had inside of me.Ā I was a zombie.Ā Walking dead.Ā When I quit, I quit cold turkey.Ā Nobody told me about the withdrawal syndrome.Ā Nobody told me it could have killed me.Ā And if it had, everybody would remember me, everybody would think of me, as a cis man.Ā Forever.Ā They would perpetuate the Lie.Ā Thatās why I transitioned, why I chose to go through all the shit I went through.Ā The writer and musician Margaret Killjoy, in 2017 she talked about what she went through the day before she came out:
āAll I could think was: āOh god, I donāt want to die a boy.āā2
I felt the same way, came out for the same reason.Ā I figured no matter what I did, I was dead.Ā I didnāt do it live, but to at least have an honest death.Ā I genuinely believed transition would kill me.
It didnāt, though!Ā Youāre alive and youāre beautiful and Iām so, so glad for that.Ā It didnāt kill you.
It could have.Ā Still could.Ā Transition has helped, has made it easierĀ for me, but itās not that way with everyone.Ā People have been kind to me, in ways that they arenāt kind to other trans women.Ā Others of us⦠arenāt so lucky.
Who are we respecting, exactly, by remaining silent about our shared experiences, our shared perspectives, things we see that you fucking donāt, that you canāt see?Ā Of course I canāt prove it.Ā I canāt prove that Iām trans.Ā You canāt prove that youāre cis.Ā Cis people, though, cis people never have to prove anything.Ā Their prejudices are the null hypothesis3.Ā If I was to go out there and say that Kurt Cobain was a cisgender man, would anybody say I was wrong?Ā Would anybody object or complain?Ā Even though my saying that is an anachronism, is meaningless.Ā The word, the concept, it literally didnāt exist when Cobain died.Ā Have you ever heard the word āagnotologyā?
No?
It means making a false claim to ignorance.Ā Claiming that we donāt know something that we do.Ā That we canāt know something that we can.Ā We know things now, Chuck.Ā We know what the symptoms of gender dysphoria are.Ā We know what it does to people.Ā How eggs think.Ā How eggs act.Ā How eggs die.Ā But we pretend we donāt.Ā We still pretend.Ā We pretend suicide is an individual act, even when we know itās not, that the reasons for it are wholly personal.Ā We pretend that when someone dies by suicide, their reasons for doing so die with them.Ā And they donāt, Chuck.Ā Weāre still dying, still dying for the same reasons Kurt Cobain did.Ā Itās not just that we arenāt allowed to recognize ourselves.Ā We arenāt allowed to recognize each other.Ā Individual choice or social contagion.Ā Those are the options weāre given.Ā And neither of them are right.Ā Neither of them are who we are.
Kurt Cobain wrote, thought, talked, died like eggs do.Ā I donāt care if he never said the magic fucking words.Ā We know our own.Ā We recognize each other.Ā And if someone is alive?Ā If someone is alive I will go my whole life without ever breathing a word.Ā Because as long as weāre alive, we do choose, and that means we can choose ignorance.Ā What I think, what I want, for someone else, for us, it doesnāt matter.Ā I do that, I follow that code, for the benefit of one person ā the egg themselves.Ā Once they die, all bets are off.Ā Omerta no longer applies.Ā Kayfabe no longer applies.
To be queer is to be erased, to experience erasure.Ā I still hear straight men arguing, as if they have any right to argue, as if they know, that Emily Dickinson was not a lesbian.Ā Emily Dickinson!Ā Iām supposed to listen to people who say this shit?Ā Iām supposed to take them seriously when they say well, actually, calling Dickinson a ālesbianā is historically anachronistic, we canāt apply the standards of the present to the past, and Jesus fuck have you read her letters?Ā She liked girls.Ā She really liked girls.Ā Kurt Cobain was a trans woman.Ā Kurt Cobain was every bit as much a trans woman as Emily Dickinson was a lesbian.Ā Refusing to say it isnāt ārespectā.Ā Itās perpetuating the crime perpetrated against Cobain, against every other trans woman who ever killed herself because of the lies we were told about ourselves.Ā No more.Ā Kurt Cobain was a trans woman.Ā I canāt, as an individual, say that.Ā I donāt have the right.Ā No trans woman can say that, individually.Ā But collectively?Ā All of us together?Ā The things we see in each other, we see those things in him too.Ā Not all of them, and not all of us.Ā Absolutely not all of us.Ā But enough of us.Ā Enough that we have the right.Ā We have the right, and I will fucking say it, and if you donāt like that, you can go fuck yourself.
Kate, are you ok?
Iām fine.
Do you want a hug?
Fuck you, Chuck.
OK, well.Ā Iām, uh.Ā Gonna go to the other room.Ā You should, uh.Ā Drink some water.Ā Stay hydrated.Ā Love you, Kate.
Love you too, Chuck.Ā Sorry.
Shhh.Ā Itās OK, Kate.Ā Itās OK.
1 Diane Purkiss criticizes the occult nature of Walkerās encyclopedia in "Women's Rewriting of Myth", in Carolyne Larrington (ed), The Feminist Companion to Mythology, London, 1992, p. 444: āIn Donna Haraway's influential terms, these women may wish to be goddesses, but they are cyborgs all the sameā. The work sheās referencing is Harawayās āA Cyborg Manifestoā.Ā Haraway was, it happens, an academic advisor to the trans woman Sandy Stone, and her āCyborg Manifestoā was a pivotal influence on Stoneās āThe Empire Strikes Back: A Post-Transsexual Manifestoā, one of the foundational works of transgender theory.

Holy fuck
OP likes to have her boyfriend try on the same outfits to compare how they look differently on each of them (cr ē“«ē“«zizi
Your wife changes her hair color every season and her personality adjusts slightly. Youāre secretly only in love with Autumn wife. She just came home sporting her Winter color.
itās my fault. itās just that when we met it was autumn; her red-orange hair and crackling laughter. thereās a little spooky in her, a lot of play. and what a better time for falling?
i didnāt realize it for the first few years - something shifting, something so subtle. the winter makes us all cold, the summer makes us all a little out of our minds. i just loved her, because she was incredible, and i was the luckiest person alive.
itās just that i realized that spring came with sudden bursts of cold. itās just that summer frequently raged in with fire sprouting from her lips. itās just that winter was the worst of all, her eyes dead. itās just that autumn loves me different; throws herself into it without the clingy sweat of summer. i used to love that summer girl, you know? i loved how wild she was, the way in summer she took every risk she could. but i carried her home drunk one too many times, cleaned up one too many of the messes she made for no reason than to enjoy the sensation of burning. and winter was worse; the shutdown, the isolation. how she became distant, a blizzard, caught up in her own head, unable to tell me what was wrong and unable to think i actually wanted to listen.
she comes home, her hair bleached white. a dark smile on her lips. the shadowy parts of her are back. they loom like icicles overhead. she kisses me with her body held at a distance, a peck on my cheek that feels like an iceberg. she makes polite conversation and we go to bed early, our bodies untouching.Ā
it is a lonely season, i think on the ninth day of this. winter is cold. winter is known for the death of things. when i look at her, i see the girl i fell for, inhabited by an alien. she was the first women i loved so much i felt it would kill me. i canāt leave. when i wake her up with my crying, she tells me to shush and go back to sleep. sheās different like this, quiet, doesnāt eat.Ā
three days later i stare at myself in the mirror. i wonder if itās me. if the fat on my body or something in my face or the wrinkles and she doesnāt love me. i try prettier lingerie, lean cuisine, i try different hair, more makeup, try harder. it doesnāt work. she looks at me the same; that empty gaze that neither loves nor condemns my actions.Ā
somewhere in februrary i lose it. weāre fighting again, from car to restaurant to car to home again. we fight about stupid things, small things; i tell her i feel she doesnāt love me, she says iām not listening. the circle goes around and around, old pain peeling back, new pain unhealing. i sleep on the couch.
i wake up when i hear her crying, white hair around her all messed up. the kind of sobbing that only comes at two in the morning, heavy and thick and hurting. my winter girl. my heart is breaking. she looks up at me like iām her anchor.Ā āiām sorry iām like this,ā she says. and i start saying, itās okay iām here weāre married, but she just shakes her head and says,Ā āI know this isnāt the real me.ā
i hold her cold hand. she stares at the blankets.Ā āi am different in winter,ā she whispers,Ā āi know i am and iām sorry.ā she looks at me.Ā āwhy do you think i dye my hair? cut it off? get rid of the old me?ā
i tell her itās okay. weāre together and itās okay, and then she whispers,Ā āiām sorry you married four of me.ā
we lay there like that, her head on my chest. she falls asleep. i stare at the ceiling, thinking of the way she sounded when she was crying. how i helped put her in that pain. how i promised in sickness and in health and everything in between.
the next day i spend at the library. there arenāt enough books on how to love someone with seasonal affective disorder so i make my own, notes and pages and little ideas on post-its. and i take a deep breath and make myself a promise.
she comes home to her favorite dinner and we kiss and sheās uneasy but thatās okay. the next day i bring home flowers and the next day she finds little love notes in her pockets. i love her quiet, the way winter demands, understand her sex drive is faltering; spend more time just cuddling. we drink wine and we kiss and some part of her starts relaxing.Ā
the truth is there is no loving someone out of their mental illness. the truth is that you can love someone in despite of it; love them loud enough to give them an excuse to believe they can make their way out of it.
and i learn. i remember the rebirth of spring, when she starts thawing. we kiss and have picnics in pretty dresses. i remember her joy at little birds and her rain dancing. i fall in love with the flowers in her cheeks and the little bursts of cleaning. i fall in love with summerās slow walks and milkshakes and shouting to music playing too loud on the speakers. i fall in love with her dancing, with the sunfire energy. and when winter comes; i am ready. i remember that snow used to look pretty. i fall in love with the hearth of her, with the holiday, with the slow smile that spreads across her face so shyly. i fall in love with how she looks in boots and mittens and every day i find another reason to love her the way she deserves - they way i always should have.
she comes home with her white hair and dark smile and a package in her hands. i ask to see what it is and that small shy grin comes creeping out. itās a sunlamp packed in with medication. she looks at me with those wide eyes and that beautiful winter blush.Ā āiām trying to get better,ā she whispers,Ā āi promise.ā
recovery doesnāt look immediate. sometimes it isnāt neat. i canāt say we never fight or that weāre suddenly complete. but each day, that tiny girlās strength gives me another reason. i love her. i love her while she tames the roller coaster of spring; i love her for reigning in the summer storms; i love her for taking her winter and trying to be warm. it is hard, because everything worth it is hard. she spreads out her autumn leaves; mixes the best parts of her into everything. learns to take winterās silence for a moment before yelling in summer. learns to take autumnās spice and give it to spring. we are both learning.
one day she comes home and her hair is different, but itās a style i donāt know. i kiss it and tell her that sheās beautiful and the inside of me swells like a flood. iām so glad that sheās mine. every part of her. the whole. i am the luckiest person on earth. and i always have been. but sheās hugging me and saying,Ā āthank you for helping me,ā and i canāt explain why iām crying.
this is what love is; not always an emotion but rather your actions. the choices we make when we realize our lives would be empty if the other was absent. this is what love is: letting them grow, helping them find their way in out of the cold. this is what love is: sometimes it takes work to see how the thing you planted together actually grows.
this is what love looks like in an autumn girl: it is winter and she glows.
Iām actually sobbing jesus christ
The work sheās referencing is Harawayās āA Cyborg Manifestoā.Ā Haraway was, it happens, an academic advisor to the trans woman Sandy Stone, and her āCyborg Manifestoā was a pivotal influence on Stoneās āThe Empire Strikes Back: A Post-Transsexual Manifestoā, one of the foundational works of transgender theory.

google's useless. tumblr tell me something fun about cuttlefish idegafanymore
Loving the notes:
as with octopodes, cuttlefish have donut shaped brains. the esophagus passes through the center, which is why they straight up die if they try to swallow anything too big! stretched out the brain :(
cuttlefish are filled with love, as demonstrated by their 3 hearts
but they are also filled with venom. good for them!
oh and also blue-green blood. yes they have teal blood, i love that for them
smaller male cuttlefish will disguise themselves as female in order to mate with females who are guarded by large males. sometimes they even use fake egg sacs as props. let's hear it for transfem lesbian cuttlefish!
btw their eggs look like boba, which is why mermaids add them to beverages
their pupils look like this:
they have an internal shell called the "cuttlebone." (it is not an actual bone, as cuttlefish don't have bones.) they use it to control buoyancy, and it's freaky:
multiple people replied with "cuttlefish are fish." they're not. they! are! mollusks!
and of course by far the most important cuttlefish fact, they change color for hunting, camouflage, and disguise purposes.
say thank you to our beautiful rainbow murder mollusks!!!
CUTTLEFISH MENTION !!! YAY YIPPEE
I will also add:
- They have 8 shorter arms (the ones you see) and two long tentacles that are normally kept hidden except for when they burst out to grab their prey like this:
- after they catch their prey successfully they will occasionally do a little flash of a different colour. It's currently uncertain why they do this, but one theory is that it's an involuntary response to being happy at having food!
- many sources, including the BBC, have claimed that they rapidly flash different colours before catching prey to "hypnotise" them. The current scientific consensus is that that's probably not really true. Instead, it's likely that they do it to break up their silhouette and so the prey isn't really sure what they're seeing - think like zebra stripes but strobing!
- they can change texture as well as colour. Since their skin is almost entirely muscle, they can make elaborate shapes and patterns out of their skin by retracting some muscles. That's why they sometimes look very spiky and sometimes very smooth
- Some of the smallest species of cuttlefish, particularly the flamboyant cuttlefish, Ascarosepion pfefferi, are so small that their cuttlebone doesn't even work as a flotation device, so they have to waddle around on the seafloor instead and it's so so cute
Please tell me if I got anything wrong btw I'm not an expert just extremely autistic ^.^
Oh my gosh. I just found this website that walks you though creating a believable society. It breaks each facet down into individual questions and makes it so simple! It seems really helpful for worldbuilding!
Heads up that this is a very extensive questionnaire and might be daunting to a lot of writers (myself included). That being said, it is also an amazing questionnaire and I will definitely be using it (or at the very least, some of it).

This inspired me to see if Patricia C. Wredeās Worldbuilding Questions are still online, and not only are they, theyāre on the exact same page I saw them on in 1998. Somewhere thereās a binder of the Word doc I made of all of them and the answers I filled in for Babyās First Fantasy World
Someone just reblogged my dancing ghosts with ā#digital artā and it doesnāt matter at all but Iām still fighting the urge to dm them āthey are very much not digital! Theyāre chicken wire, tore my jeans, and left me covered in small, bleeding scratches! I got a tetanus shot about it!ā
No computers were used for these - partly because I like using my hands and partly because I have genuinely no idea how to do digital animation anyway. It seems like witchcraft.
These are life-sized because I have very little experience with figure drawing/sculpting so I just used my husband and I for proportion measurements. (Which meant I was chasing him around going ācome back! Let me measure your femur!ā)
Video description: green light on a chicken wire sculpture of a dancing couple. Itās turning in the wind outside at night so they (hopefully) look alive.
I saw another version but I'll def reblog this one.
@shot-thru-the-art can I ask: the wire they're hung from, does it just go anywhere the wind blows? vs being on some sort of tumbrel (I think it's called?) that spins them, I mean.
This is the most amazing thing, IDK how anyone could think it's digtal. It's too perfectly imperfect.
Tho I am sorry about the tetanus shot <shudder>
Hi! The ghosts are hung on an arial yoga rig thingy that can spin and sway in the wind without tangling the ropes supporting it. It catches moderate winds but because it doesnāt have a lot of surface area it doesnāt sway or spin in every small breeze.
For this video I went up and shoved it to make it spin.
My liege, if you recall, the prophecy stated that you would fall by the hands of your first born son. Yes, I understand that twelve daughters is a very impressive feat, but mayhaps you should consider quitting while youāre ahead?
My liege, you mustnāt be so reckless. If you recall, your prophecy stated āyou shall not die by any efforts of man or woman, nor of any material from this landā, and it feels rather pertinent to your most recent decision. Please consider the situation with your father and your brother, and to a lesser extent your 32 younger sisters, and know your prophecy is not one to be neglected. Your father tempted fate and look where that got him. Yes my liege, I do know it was a heart attack that he passed from, but the royal guard directly saw your baby brother reach out towards your father with his hands as he passed. Yes, I know the prophecy would be better stated to say ābeside the handā rather than āby the handā, I didnāt write the prophecy. No my liege, I mean no disrespect. Yes, I agree, this was a very inappropriate time to discuss your father, and we should go back to the issue at hand. Yes, I do recall that no man or woman may slay you, however, if you think about the prophecy with the context of your newly imported elephant,
My liege, this is hardly the appropriate attire for a hunting trip, especially one to the woods you were forbade from entering. Yes your majesty, I know you are ruler of this kingdom, but if you recall your prophecy- you mock me. I take your safety and fate with the upmost sincerity, and you respond with āmi mi mi mimiā? Please recall your- yes I know what your prophecy states, āyour reign shall last until nature itself regains your throne and crownā, I was about to recount it for you. Look my liege, I think this hunting trip is a terrible idea. You are far too clumsy and the forest floor is uneven with roots! If the stairs of the palace or your own feet are enough to cause you to trip, remaining upright may be difficult, and, to put it frankly, falling hitting your head on a rock would hardly a glorious engraving on your tombstone. Please donāt wear the crown on this hunting trip, theyāll know youāre the new queen because of how similar you look to your sister. Itās a prideful act that will only- oh the royal messenger is here. What news do you have? Oh this requires my immediate attention. I will return, my liege. Do not attend that hunting trip in your current attire, though you should consider not going at all.
Royal To-Do List
Schedule date of coronation
Organise a trip to the Royal Soothsayer with the new Queen
Search forest for the crown
Purchase a new throne, or locate the stolen one
Fix elephant-shaped hole in the throne room
Now, as a part of the induction protocols, all new employees are to be informed of a long-held family tradition. When each new ruler comes to power, they receive a letter a few days later from the old soothsayer. Yes, the one who lives in the woods, we paid for them to live there. Thought it would be a good way to avoid receiving more prophecies, as she wouldnāt receive notice of the coronation until afterwards, but now they just get sent in the mail. We used to add in 15 minutes leeway to the schedule for when the soothsayer interrupted the event, it was a nightmare to try and predict when theyād show up. If it were up to me, weād stop the postal service going that far, but only the Queen can make that ruling. Iām getting sidetracked. As I recall, the Queenās prophecy states āyour heart will bleed when the man who could never love you distances himself, his aim not one intending to hurt you, yet he will be your demiseā. In order to circumvent this, she is not allowed to take a hand in marriage, and any casual romances are monitored to ensure attraction is present from both parties. Furthermore, suitors are not informed of the Queenās status as royalty, further preventing anyone attempting to woo her for wealth or political status. Sheās also elected to take on many hobbies to fill her time, to focus less on any romantic endeavours. Itās a good system, if a little difficult to source new hobbies on short notice. Oh, yes, please voice your concerns. Itās always a good sign when new employees take the Queenās prophecy seriously.
Well yes, this is why we hired you. Sheās been interested in archery as a hobby recently, and we canāt exactly send somewhere accessible to the general public. What if she falls for someone outside of our control? No, itās much safer to hire you as her private archery instructor. And I presume sheāll learn quickly, not every archery instructor considers himself an āarrow aceā.
My liege, Iāve been reviewing some of the royal funding and budgetary records, and a few things have come to my attention. Now, I understand that we have surplus funding in the royal vault as a result of your prophecy, which, if you recall, states that āyou will die by a blade not intended for battle, but one that will find itās way to you in a moment of joyā. I stand by it being a wise decision to keep you away from any activities such as woodworking or cooking, and that the money that would have gone into funding those activities was yours to allocate as you wished, but I suspect Iāve found some errors on the records. Firstly, we have two categories of payments going to the soothsayer; one for living expenses, and one, as I have just discovered, labeled āpropheciesā. I suspect that- I beg your pardon my liege? We pay for the prophecies? Why on earth- Weāre paying them to not deliver us prophecies, thatās why they live out on the far end of the woods. This doesnāt- Tradition? I understand itās a tradition my liege, but if we are paying for it to be inconvenient to deliver prophecies, and then paying for the prophecies themselves- Is that why your sister wished to go to the soothsayer in person rather than wait for a letter? She was aware of this? And the rest of your sisters too? My liege, surely you see that it undermines our efforts in preventing prophecies to pay for them. At the very least, one of the payments should be discontinued to improve our financial status. Youāre right my liege, this is a very complex discussion that requires more time to process, and I shall āshut up about the soothsayerā as you so eloquently put it. We will be discussing this later. The other issue I came to inquire about was that within the records for the entertainment budget, each performance is listed by name. I once again would like to reiterate that the extra funding for entertainment, while not aligning with my recommendations, is reasonable given the circumstances of your prophecy. However, once again with considerations to your prophecy, āPablo the Knife-Jugglerā,
My liege, Iām beginning to understand why you have called me to the castle rooftop. As your most trusted advisor, overseeing your actions and assisting with difficult choices is why I have been employed under your family for so long. However, one key aspect of my services that has remained fairly neglected by your sisters, and your father, is that of your prophecy. Often advice regarding your prophecies leads directly to the passing of the crown, and I believe this to be a critical moment in your rule. You had a much simpler prophecy than most of your sisters, but the vagueness that comes with that should really indicate where to place your trust in me, and the rooftop seems to be that very place. If you recall, your prophecy stated that āPride shall be your downfallā, which- No my liege, I believe that you can do a kick-flip,
My liege, I am incredibly concerned about the prophecy you have received. Usually it takes a week or two to come in the mail, but not a day had passed since your coronation before the wax seal of the soothsayer arrived at the palace doors. I have spent the past few hours contemplating what should be implemented considering its slightly paradoxical nature. As you recall, your prophecy states that āin a time of unmatched uncertainty, the one you entrust the most shall betray youā. I have been the royal advisor for your family since your fatherās rule, a well trusted and respected figure by many who came before you, and I shall do everything within my power to prevent a potential betrayal, regardless of how the prophecy speaks of me. As such, having worked for your father and under all of your sisters that ruled before you, I feel I have accumulated enough sick leave,
Thank you all for attending the all-staff meeting. We have several topics to discuss today, so weāll begin post-haste. Firstly, Iād like to address the royal elephant in the room. We still have no idea where the royal elephant is, and may have to cut back on searching due to budget cuts, which leads us to our next point, the metaphorical elephant in the room. With our last Queenās untimely death weāve made significant progress on finding what was the cause of her death. Based on the fact she died at her one-year ruling anniversary banquet, and her prophecy, which if you all recall stated that ārended flesh for naught but greed shall end in rended fleshā, we believed that it likely something about the food killed her. We had checked for choking hazards and tested others for poison and had found no clues, so our thought process was that her body was unable to tolerate something resulting in her demise. This is where the budget cuts come into place.
We hired a mage.
Settle down. I understand this is a controversial decision, but the benefits have already begun to reveal themselves. While the mage is unable to detect ailments on a corpse, several of the princesses have all shared an ailment referred to as a āshellfish allergyā. While it is unclear what allergy means, it sounds detrimental, and the mage clarified that it is deadly if not handled. As lobster was served at that banquet, that is likely the culprit, and as such shall be removed from the palaceās future supply orders, preventing future queens from following her path. Staff members will be allowed access to the current stock until we run out, so I hope a nice lobster dinner will quell your fears.
Now, some of you have likely been worried about this decision in relation to the current Queenās prophecy. We have made sure to screen this mage as thoroughly as possible, and have concluded that he is, in fact, a mage. Not a swindler nor soothsayer, not a wizard nor fae. We have determined his status as a mage. This is of great importance to us, as I would not like to be responsible for the passings of any more rulers. I will admit that taking a month off right at the start of a new reign was not my finest decision, but thatās not relevant at the moment. What is relevant is the new queenās prophecy, which should be easy to recall given how short the letter was. As you should recall, the prophecy stated āWizardās curseā, but as this is not a Wizard, we have no cause for concern. Now, as a mage is very costly, the budgetary restrictions over the next month will be implemented across the following areasā¦
He lied on his resume
My liege, a letter has just arrived from the royal soothsayer. It is likely regarding your prophecy. I shall read it verbatim for you. *Ahem*. āYou shall die underfoot of an animal trained for war.ā Ah. It appears this letter was intended for your dearly departed sister. Had this letter arrived three days earlier, her rule may have lasted more than a week. It would have been very helpful in preventing her horse-riding accident. My apologies my liege, I know you were looking forward to hearing your prophecy, and I am truely sorry to disappoint. I shall alert you when it arrives. Thank you for your attention, you may return to caring for the royal hounds.
I would like to thank you all for attending this all staff meeting on such short notice. We are here to discuss the events regarding the passing of the most recent Queen. It appears I have neglected that horses are not the only animal trained for war, that animal related incidents may occur to more than one queen, and that the soothsayer is, in fact, a soothsayer. In related news, we have located the royal elephant.
How to Write Vivid Descriptions WITHOUT Overloading
Are you the type of person who describes a setting by using an intimidatingly huge paragraph that just rambles on and on and on because you're told to be specific but don't quite know how to do it correctly? If you've been struggling to detail settings, you've come to the right place! I'll reveal how to effectively describe a setting without having to use one big chunk of text and shoving it at your reader!
~ LINK IDEAS TOGETHER
As writers, we hear "show, don't tell" quite often, and the same applies when writing settings. But for some people this tip does little to help because, well, it's a bit of a vague concept.
With that being said, "linking ideas together" is a great way to describe the setting without having to explain the location! What do I mean?
Let's say there's a green field and I'm trying to depict it. This method is to find another subject that could connect with the setting to further describe it. What else is green? What reminds the character of the field? What's something similar?
Ex: The field in front of him reminded him of a photo he once saw long ago as a boy. His parents were standing in a lush, grassy area void of people, hugging each other tightly and smiling brightly at the camera under the bright blue sky.
In that example, I linked the field to a picture the character found, and by using his memories, I was able to paint a rough image of the location while setting the tone!
Ex: She'd been there before. She was there when the building still stood tall. When the streets were filled with people bustling about and the air smelled like cigarettes. Now, there is no tall building, but instead a pile of debris. She hasn't seen anyone in thirty minutes, and any smell of cigarettes would've surely been washed away by the rain.
This time, I connected the present location with the past one. But instead of showing the similarities, I contrasted them to emphasize the changes and abandoned state of the area!
~ LITERARY DEVICES
The most common literary devices I see regarding setting are similes, metaphors, and personifications!
It's similar my previous tip, where you connect two ideas together, but more general. The similes and metaphors don't have to be based on a specific experience of the character, but instead something more universal so everyone can connect with it!
Personification, on the other hand, can be used to substitute verbs.
Examples:
The stars shone like glittering jewels.
The road carved into the mountain.
The flowers waltzed along the music of the wind.
These devices allow you to describe something quickly and elegantly!
~ USE ACTIONS
Arguably, the most common tip provided when describing a setting is to use the five senses: sight, smell, touch, hearing, and taste. If you're like me, though, and have NO clue on how that's supposed to help, let me break it down!
Instead of thinking about the senses directly, use ACTIONS that correlate with the senses.
Instead of saying "the wood felt tough", say "he touched the wood, marveling at the toughness of the material".
Instead of saying "the air smelled like candies", say "she sniffed the air, inhaling the aroma of candies".
Instead of saying "the city was bright", say "they stare at the city, admiring how the lights illuminate the buildings and roads.
Do you see how your description suddenly blends in with the text now that there's an action and separate subject involved? You're still effectively describing the scene, but you're not pushing it at your reader. This also makes it far easier to build onto the depiction of the moment because you're not limited to adjectives!
By utilizing these three concepts, you can build an evocative description of the setting that won't overwhelm nor bore the readers!
Happy writing~
3hks :D

Sleep eludes me lately
Much like the days when I didnāt think of you
And as I pray for sleep at night
Thereās always an image of us in my mind
Side by side
My head to your shoulder
As if we still offered each other peace
In this desert garden
I wonder what you tell yourself now
Sheās too sassy
She talked too much
We didnāt make sense
But all I really asked for was your consideration
To be thought of
To he cared for
To be something other than a convenience
And somehow, that was too much
I wonder if youāll regret it
I hope you regret it
The stars are far away
"he would not fucking say that" but it's "they would not be having carefully negotiated bdsm manual sex"
All erotica writers should ask themselves this question: "Am I including kink negotiation in this scene because I think it makes the sex hotter/more interesting/more believable/more entertaining, or am I letting the imaginary morality cop that lives inside my head police what kind of sex I'm allowed to write?
A reminder that some of the best consent reminders in erotica are worked into the scene itself. Grabbing the person who's fucking them and pulling them closer, dirty talk to the tune of "harder" or "more", maybe some fumbles where they have to readjust or break character for a second but they laugh it off because they're having fun, even something as subtle as smiling into a kiss.
There's so much you can do to make it genuinely sexy.

Reblogging for reference on how to make a blanket cape.
one of my very favorite obscure story tropes is when thereās an episode/plotline/tabletop campaign session where the conceit is āeach member of the gang gets trapped in a specially tailored dream/nightmare/illusory mindscape and has to break outā
my favorite addition to this trope is when the gang has to pass through everyoneās specially tailored nightmare scape and itās just one gut punching trauma after the next that their friends help them through
Some good twists on these:
Nightmares:
- one party memberās nightmare seems like a perfectly normal and even pleasant scenario until the rest of the party realizes that whatās normal and pleasant for them is terrifying for the other member.
-the happy-go-lucky character who told everyone their fear is something benign like āducksā actually has a massive and crushing trauma nightmare scenario they never told anyone about because they didnāt want to be a burden/still canāt trust.
- villain tries to make a nightmare scenario for someone and it backfires because they didnāt realize that guy is a grade-A Freak and they love it.
āideal lifeā illusions
- villain attempts to make what they think will be an ideal dream life only for the protagonist to immediately point out a glaring flaw or get mad because they know damn well life isnāt like this
-a party member struggles to break free from the illusion because itās just like regular life for them
- party discovers someone in the group has been not entirely honest about who they are when their ideal life doesnāt match thier projected persona at all.
-the illusion is exactly the same as real life save for one glaring but inconsequential difference, like someone having a different hair color.
