anyway lately I've been thinking about the way fandom largely handles characters who are caretakers and protectors

because receiving care and help and selfless attention is considered desirable, and often the rightful due of the fandom/personal fave (because of whatever past trauma or horrors or lack of self-worth they're struggling with)

but apparently the characters that do the caretaking do not deserve interiority or agency, they're not interesting in their own right, their only function is to be there to dispense support and adoration for the fave

I don't want to totally flatten this to a gender issue, because there are other facets to it, but sometimes I want to ask: is there a particular reason fandom is uninterested in the perspectives of characters that do the helping/supporting/caretaking, and instead almost exclusively prefers the point of view of the recipient? and might it have something to do with the largely female coding of caretaking work (which is often devalued and difficult and poorly compensated in real life)?

though, also: doing this with two male characters doesn't remove the essential problem that only one of these characters is afforded real consideration as a (fictional) person
